Conte | Spurs Manager

Should this thread be renamed "Conte sack watch?"

Asking for a friend..

Spurs were the better team until that 1st goal and then it changed with Newcastle scoring another one. Didn't watch 2nd half but they lost so it's another bad result for them.

Some people were moaning on here when Tottenham got Conte saying that our board was incompetent because they wouldn't go for Conte but what we know (or what was repored back then) is they didn't want another Mourinho situation at the club and I thought back then and now still do that they made right decision, as much as we don't know how will everything go with ten Hag in charge. Conte gets you title in 2015-2017 period, in the meanwhile it's become much tougher league.

I can see Pochettino coming back to Spurs if Conte fails to achieve top 4 or/and win a trophy this season.

Conte is not good enough and neither are Spurs.
He's a bit of a dinosaur I think. He insists on 3 at the back. Doesn't look to control matches. Very stubborn with his systems and tactics.

There's nothing wrong with playing 3/5 at the back but when it's not working, it can get ugly. Spurs fans will take finishing 4th every season I would imagine even if playing the terrible football they do under Conte. But unfortunately for their manager and fans, they're not winning matches at the moment.

I think he'll be gone by end of the season but I always knew he'd be a short-term plaster for a gaping wound which is a Levy/ENIC controlled Tottenham Hotspur.

@balaks knows better than any of us about his own team and has said Conte needs time. The thing is, you don't hire Conte for a long term rebuilding project. You go for a Potter or Ten Hag for that (just two examples). Conte was always going to be a terrible fit for Spurs.

Few of the best decisions United have made in the past decade is not hiring Antonio Conte while he was available earlier this season. He is a great manager but his super defensive and pragmatic style of play is really boring to watch.

Conte needs time and many windows apparently, but the truth is, he won't get it because he'll burn the place down before then.
As I have said before I expect him to sign a contract extension before the end of the season.

You do remind me of Glaston these days with your total commitment to whoever is in charge, it's sort of admirable? It's a weird expectation to have I think. Even if that happens, the meltdown is still coming either way, just means you'll waste more money paying him off.

I think people are skeptical because Conte doesn’t do long term projects. Unless for some reasons he’s changed you must understand why he’s not viewed as a building and development kind of coach.

Regardless of Levy’s tight reign on funds, I don’t think it’s working out for Conte.
True he’s inherited a bit of a mixed bag of players with varying abilities but can anyone come up with an example where playing 3 at the back has been successfully deployed in recent years?

I just don't believe Conte can win a Premier League title in this era. If you look at all of the other managers at top 6 clubs, they all want to dominate games and play on the front foot. Even Howe at Newcastle is better suited to a top club. There isn't any journey with Spurs, no aspirations for anything more. If Spurs fans are happy with watching ugly football in the hope that they might finish 4th, then great. I know that I wouldn't be happy and I think there is every chance they will miss out. I'm delighted we never appointed Conte last year, even though we had to go through that shambles of a season.

Yeah he's consistent I gave him that. He backs all spurs managers no what in front of him and what people will say about them.

Have a feeling this will end in tears too

Are you happy/hoping he does ? Do you think your only issue is Kulusevski missing ?

It was clear in the summer that Spurs lacked creativity in the middle, and quality on the wings. None of it was addressed. Instead he spent his money on Richarlison - when Kulusevski and Moura could do the same job - and Bissouma - when Hojberg, Bentancur and Skipp were all from a similar mould.

Perisic on a free was a no brainer, as was Lenglet. Spence never looked PL ready to me.

People were claiming Spurs were having a good summer, but for me he didn't improve the first XI one bit, and that's likely to cost him

Chelsea CL win. He literally won the serie A the season before with the same tactics.

A terrible Serie A where the only rival was Juventus who were in serious decline.

Football has rapidly changed over the last two years or so. Even the small clubs like Burnley play front-foot, pressing, attacking football now.

He asked when has anyone had any recent success with the 5 at the back...

Btw I think you're confusing formation with tactics and playing style. Just because you play 5 at the back doesn't mean you don't press or play attacking football. Brighton play 5 at the back as well and they're the only team over the last 2 seasons (In the pl) to have more possession in a game than City.

Conte at Chelsea was a lot more attacking and played on the front foot a lot more than the current Spurs, same Formation different tactics...

I don't want us to lose someone who I think is the best manager we have had probably in my lifetime. I don't think I'm like Glaston as I'm just offering my honest opinion and not trying to wind people up.

Totally get that but I've seen nothing to believe he won't stay for at least another year. Could be wrong of course but I think he sees this as a project and he appears happy enough.

I'd be delighted if he does yeah. No obviously we have lots of issues right now and it's going to take at least another year (probably more) to get anywhere near where we want to be in terms of the squad. I only highlight how much we miss Kulusevski because he is our most productive player apart from Kane in the squad and without him we desperately lack creativity.

Gil seems like a decent player, why hasn't he played more ?
I think he will get more of a chance now with Richarlison and Kulusevski out. He is talented but quite weak and easily pushed off the ball. I want to see more of him though.

Glenn Hoddle saying fans are going to stop coming to the grounds because they can't celebrate properly because of VAR. Why the feck would that be a reason to no longer attend the stadium?

The arrogance of that statement is crazy, when Spurs went to the CL final with the VAR, what was he thinking then ?

It took almost four minutes to make a decision, that's what he is complaining about and he is totally right. It completely took all the excitement out of the game.

Conte doesn’t like him and is stubborn enough to use him to try to prove some sort of bizarre point about squad depth.

Yeah, look at the subdued celebrations of the Spurs players here. Look at how sad they are over the VAR intervention. Total dejection.

And I'll say that the Spurs POV but I'm pretty sure the Sporting fans are happy with the correct decision, however long it took to get there (it wasn't close to 4mins btw). Besides the initial reaction from Spurs players and fans was full of excitement
