Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

Top 5 artists right now? Not lyricists or songwriters or musicians etc etc....as overall artists.

Mine in no order:

The Game (sorry but I have eternal love for him)
Rick Ross
Kanye West
Travis Scott
Drake

If we are talking rap Kendrick is no.1 by quite a distance too, although his fans do overate him in an all time context.

Random thought: can anyone make the argument for Drake being a better artist than Rick Ross?
Define 'artist'? In terms of skillset and versatility Drake is far superior.

And that was the point of the question. Not trying to denigrate Drake. But Ross's catalog is world class. Easily 2-3 classics under his belts. Tons of commercial success and critical acclaim.
Yep I know you agree. I am on board too.

Yeah I just don't get what his 'thing' is - I think he's great (I enjoyed DAMN a lot), but maybe I need to listen to his older stuff?

also I do not get the hype re: J.Cole at all. Everyone telling me to give him a go and it's all singing and soft melodies - hmmm, not my scene.

You have to listen to his albums as a whole and a few times too. Try good kid maad city, but give it some time to grow on you.

To each his own and I'm not going to mock someone who gets a certain music more but my top 5 combining quality and quantity

Tier 1

Kendrick

Tier 2

Drake
Kanye

Tier 3

Pusha T
Travis Scott

Damn is probably his worst album for me. Not saying it’s bad but the others are just so good. GKMC is a classic and apart from one or two songs I think Section 80 is amazing too. TPAB speaks for itself as a whole but I find myself not going back to individual songs as much.

Yep. Currently on an ‘Is Endless better than Blonde’ thought train. But probably not.
 I actually had this debate the other day.

I came to the conlcuscon that Endless is thoroughly underrated but not as fine tuned as an entire project like Blonde.

Wither is such a good song. So good.

I think I need to give him 'a Martial' (i.e. a sustained run)....

I'm not a big Kendrick fan. My current favourite rappers are J Cole, Joyner Lucas and Joey Badass.

Big fan of Pusha T's latest album though. 'The Games We Play' might be my favourite song this year.

Your definition of classic is very loose.

Ross makes good albums, but does how many stand out songs does he have?
That you or anyone can name off the top of their head without googling.
When I listen to Ross albums I end up losing sight of when one song finishes and when another starts.

For what it’s worth, I think he has the best flow in the game for his music. But he really can’t switch it up, he sticks to what he knows, but you can predict what you’re gonna get from a Ross album, and that’s not worthy of being the best rap ‘artist’ (assuming artist accompasses a wide spectrum of what it takes to make a song)

Same, not a massive Kendrick fan. Section 80 was fantastic though. The rest is hit or miss with me.

Joyner has potential. Some stuff I felt he could do better with but I enjoy his music.

I quite like his voice and delivery, but his content has become boring and predictable for me. Also after getting exposed for being a phony, i just can't take him seriously.

I'm only a very casual follower of rap/hip-hop music. Explain the phony to me please?

Placeholder for serious post when I'm sober

The feck? Is Drake some kind of a benchmark for a great artist now? Hold my beer while I crumble inside.

Shouldn't the topic title have "rap" instead of "hip hop"? Or "hip hop music" at least. Not sure if you've had this arguement before but it should be fixed.

Astroworld sounds okay but I got lidu beef with Travis' flow, sounds like a chorus most of the time.

I've come to the conclusion that Astroworld is alright, but largely overrated. The good songs on it are great, but a lot of skippable tracks.

This is some serious bender you're on.
