Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

KOD and Scorpion were both disappointing.

I really loved Forrest Hills Drive but found KOD forgettable. It seemed a bit too much of a try hard effort to step into the more sophisticated mainstream Hip Hop space that Kendrick inhabits. It's really hard to do what Kendrick does, being musically ambitious whilst having major mainstream success. I can only think of Radiohead that have really done something similar in the modern era.

Drake is one of those artists that doesn't land on me. I acknowledge that he's the biggest star in the world right now so he must have some chops but I just don't get it. Bit like how I feel about Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Despite all the big name releases, no album has really stood out for me this year. At best some were good.

Yeah I agree with this.
If you had told me that j cole, kanye, pusha, nas, drake plus collab albums from Kanye & Cudi and Jay & Bey would drop within 2 months of each other I'd be so excited.

In reality, there's very few stand out tracks in all of the albums, and they all fall within the lower tier of all of their collective discography's

Streaming has made music more accessible, but the quality has dropped substantially, even compared to a few years ago.

We gotta move on from ‘old school’ at some point.
Hip hop is allowed to evolve and change over time.

KOD is good though - top 5 of the year for me, I’m rarely in the mood to intentionally listen to j Cole anymore though.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind some new stuff. I just really liked what J Cole did with that album.

That said, I usually am in the mood for J Cole.

Yeah I feel the same. Kids See Ghosts was probably the best for me out of those but none of them I would say were that good. Saba's album for me is still my favourite this year.

Out of all of them I think I'm going to be listening to pusha the most. I really liked his one. I didn't really expect much of the others in all honesty. Saba was great too.

Anyone listened to the new Future album?
Yep. It's better than Superfly which only had the wayne feature, Stains, Georgia and other 2 tracks on there i liked. Prefer this album. One of my favourite Future albums is the collab with Young Thug 'Super Slimey', that shit touched me man :lol:.

Youngboy NBA is one of the greatest artists to come out of Louisianna and is only second to one of the goats which is Weezy. If you reply to this post with a reply saying he's whack just stick me on ignore while your there. Just listen to "Al Youngboy" it's fecking great or listen to his single 'Genie'. I'm very very easily pleased music wise but he's top I'll give him that especially considering I didn't like his music to begin with. Kevin Gates got a tattoo of his face on his body, that must mean something .

Gaulden has four sons with three mothers. The children are named Kayden, Kamron, Taylin and Kamiri.[7]

Age 19. My prediction is he'll get shot like the last lil shitty within two years.

Edit: Oh shit, my bad, was quick to jump conclusions.

In November 2016, U.S. Air Marshals arrested Gaulden before a concert in Austin, Texas, accusing Gaulden of jumping out of a vehicle and opening fire on a group of people on a South Baton Rouge street. Gaulden was charged with two counts of attempted murder.[24][25] Gaulden was in jail from December 2016 to August 2017 for attempted first degree murder.[26] Speaking on his incarceration, Gaulden said "I don't think they really target, but if you got a name, they know who you is, you do something, they gonna come get you, and whoever you’re with and whatever they do, you're accountable for it just because you got the biggest name. That's how that shit go."[27] On August 23, 2017, a Baton Rouge judge sentenced Gaulden to a suspended 10-year prison term and three years of active probation for his involvement in a drive-by shooting.[25]

Gaulden was arrested before a concert at The Moon nightclub in Tallahassee on February 25, 2018. Gaulden had a warrant in the state of Georgia for allegedly committing assault, weapons violations and kidnapping.[28] Hotel surveillance footage leaked shortly following his arrest showing Gaulden assaulting his then-girlfriend Jania.[29]

On March 15, 2018, Gaulden was released from prison on $75,000 bail.[30]

My mistake.

Make it one year.

Not that I disagree, but that’s a pretty specific criteria isn’t it? Outside of Hot Boyz who else is from Louisiana?
Not really hard to be ‘one of the best’ when there’s literally a handful to choose from.

- just googled, and ‘rappers form Louisiana’ returned Hot Boyz, plus Kevin Gates & Mystikal.
Whereas ‘rappers from new orleans’ Includes Jay Electronica, and Youngboy is definitely not better than him.

Yeah i should stop posting whilst off my tits . As always I'm ending up agreeing with you, no he certainly isn't better than Jay Electronica.

I'm not some degenerate I assure you , I'm on holiday from work. Joker .

On holiday, getting drunk, listening to NBA YoungBoy & getting inspired to shitepost on the 'caf - that sounds like degenerate behaviour to me sir ;)

Enjoy yourself!

Okay so Denzel Curry's new stuff is pretty good.

Just giving it a listen now, sounds great. Is that Goldlink on Black Balloons?

EDIT: Yes it's right there under the song you idiot Solius.

Denzel Curry's new one, Taboo, is excellent. This single from it is *ginormous*.

You only had to wait 9 minutes, was released at midnight. I’m currently listening to it :)

It's the only thing more disappointing than our transfer window. Nah it's not that bad imo. But I was expecting more. Waiting for 2 years as well...

It's not bad. Not great though. I miss some of those snippets they put out beforehand. I don't know if you listened to those. Like Easy or Forgive Me. Those sounded very good. Didn't make it for the album though. I'd say Stargazing, No Bystanders, NC-17, Who? What?, Sicko Mode and Stop Trying to be God are decent. The rest is a bit meh in my opinion.

EDIT: Forgot Butterly Effect. Great song. But that's out for a year now already. Don't know why he put in on the album.

I think he evolved a bit in terms of his style over this album. Sicko Mode was the best track of the album for me with Carousel.

Just listening now. Frank Ocean on CAROUSEL feck yes. That man can do no wrong.

Sicko Mode is amazing, one of my favourite songs of the year.
Carousel is good too. Stargazing was good too.

The rest of the tracks need to pass the car/gym test before I make a final judgement.

I see Tame Impala produced Skeletons so interesting to see what that sounds like.

James Blake, most of Migos, John Mayer, 21 Savage, The Weeknd, Thundercat. All sorts of features I see on Wiki

Well no wonder it's Travis. I love the guy. Just expected even more from him. Gotta say though. The album really is growing on me. Sicko Mode from minute 3 onwards is just crazy
Agreed that it grows (rapidly!)
Needs about 4/5 full spins IMO
