Yeah, his verse in "Detroit vs Everybody" was fire - i think this album might be as good as his classic "Detroit" mixtape even though Em didn't make the final cut.

A new mixtape from Drake would be nice as he finishes up his album, although i am getting bored of his super duper flow, hope he goes back to "So far gone" Drizzy.

I was talking to someone else about that. He is still a top 3 rapper right now in terms of quality and mass appeal, but his sound is getting stale. Both the flow and the production. A switch up would be nice (not Yeezus proportions though)

He does seem to be releasing the same type of song every month, still give him credit for his consistency though, something Kendrick Lamar seems to be lacking.

I honestly think Drake doesn't have a lot of things to rap about these days seeing as his previous projects were about his rise to the top and his recent projects are about him being the man, i think he will try to do a J.Cole and channel his hometown in his next album, probably talk about his childhood and his faux humble beginnings - he has already named it Views from the 6 so that would be my best guess.

Huh?

Just realised Kendrick and Drake are dropping albums this year, Cole,Logic and Joey Badass have already dropped albums, Wale dropped a mixtape,Meek Mill,Pusha T and Big Sean also dropping albums - Kanye West dropping his "masterpiece" aswell, 2015 is about to be fire:devil::devil::devil:

K.Dot isn't consistent??

And Drake has always, always, always rapped about materialistic things and women, flashy cars etc.
He'll wrap it around wider subjects that are current in his life at the time - so like you said, his rise to fame & then getting accustomed to fame, family, ex girlfriends etc.
But even on his very first mixtapes he's talked about the same subject - this is something Drake himself has acknowledged both on track and in interviews. That's just the kind of person he is.
His subject matter wont change largely.

Young Thug comfortably the compelling thing in rap music rn too brehs.

Kendrick not being consistent, when and how?

Hmmm, lets see GKMC came out in 2012 and since then Kendrick Lamar hasn't released any projects, he has had some features here and there but his only lead single was "i" which was..... alright. Not exactly the discography of a consistent rapper.

So, Outkast routinely took 2 years between albums and they have arguably one of the best discographies in rap. It's easy to be 'consistent' when your subject matter and vision is so narrow. Kendrick hasn't been releasing much of anything but his projects speak for themselves. Section.80 was a great piece of work, as was GKMC, these are not pieces of work you are likely to ever see from guys like Drake and Sean.

So... you haven't heard Overly Dedicated or Section 80, which is where he built his hype from?

Most rappers have 2/3 years in between albums some even more.
It's the garbage rappers that create 100 tracks every year and just release material to stay relevant.

That was my original point, regardless of the content of his albums, he hasn't been consistent. You have to understand that Outkast was a group, its takes more time for a group to release a solid project than an individual and a lot of great rappers have released solid projects on a yearly basis so what makes Kendrick so special? Unless he is about to drop another Illmatic.

Besides from 2010 - 2012 he released 3 solid projects O.D,Section.80 and GKMC so why take so long now?

What rappers release an album every year?

OD was a mixtape and K.Dot said he was working on Section 80 for about two years IIRC.

So you're practically saying in order to create a solid album you have to take 2/3 years? then why is Section.80 such a good project? or GKMC a modern day classic album? you are basically saying if Drake takes a 3 year hiatus to create his album it is automatically going to be a great piece of work?
Eminem took a long hiatus and came back with Relapse, while DMX and Tupac dropped 2 classic albums each in one year.

You don't have to be consistent to be a great rapper, i only said Kendrick wasn't consistent which is true since he hasn't dropped a project in 3 years, it doesn't mean he is not a great rapper.

Not releasing any music doesn't make you inconsistent, I think people consume culture far too quickly now. I mean D'Angelo just came back after 15 years! You don't need to drop albums every year, the fans might like it but honestly I'd prefer it if rappers took their time and focussed on honing whole concepts rather than having 6 good songs per 18 song albums. Also if you could point out rappers who have released critically acclaimed solo projects within a year of each other I would like to see that because it would a very short list indeed.

I reckon Kendrick drops in the summer. Jay Rock will be next from TDE.

Jay Z dropped his first 8 albums in his first 8 years.
DMX dropped his first 2 albums in the same year and his 3rd the next year
Nas dropped 2 albums in one year twice
Tupac dropped an album every year from 93 to 95 and dropped 2 albums in 96
Even Outkast didn't take more than a 2 year hiatus before their second to last album

You see Section.80 was an organic piece and a part of Kendrick's development as an MC, GKMC was years in the planning and he's had that concept in his mind for years. Every rapper is different, I think or I get the impression Kendrick takes a lot of pride in putting cohesive bodies of work together and I see no problem in him taking his time at all. It doesn't make him special, inconsistent or anything.

Kendrick's being mixed right now, 85% done.

its not really about dropping albums, its the fact that "i" is his only release since GKMC

But even the rappers in your list of consistent rappers, didn't consistently keep releasing albums yearly - just maybe for a year or two in their career. It happens, they're artists if they're inspired then they can't help but make music.

Jay-Z would be the exception, Tupac as we know had way too many songs so that's no surprise.

Just because K.Dot hasn't released anything since his last album doesn't make him inconsistent.
In fact that's been his entire style throughout his career - so he's actually staying true to himself.

I think we are getting hung up on the semantics of the word 'consistent', if you mean Kendrick's not releasing songs all of the time then no he's not consistent. Kendrick being a consistent MC is another argument entirely. Because obviously it's perfectly possible to be consistent in making music even if that music isn't very good.

The point i was trying to make, didn't mention anything about him being a consistent MC, we all know Kendrick will go bar for bar with anyone right now. Should have asked what i meant.

I think you're missing his career trajectory completely here, I mean C4 he was rapping like Lil Wayne and he was known as K.Dot and he was in Jay Rock's shadow. Then came the Kendrick Lamar rebrand, the Kendrick Lamar EP, OD, then Section.80 and then GKMC. All of this was him developing as an artist on an upward curve, even GKMC was a concept he had in mind for a long, long time. Then he's been touring and obviously after that he's had to question himself how do I follow up GKMC with the eyes of the world on me now?

We got there eventually :).

So he released, two mixtapes year after year.
Then two albums year after.

He's due to release his next album this year, then the collaboration with J.Cole soon follows.
That still sounds consistent.

I don't even think No Sleep was an official mixtape as he had lots of singles out in that while he was trying to establish his name.

We could talk about this all night, but I still think you'd struggle to find many other rappers of Kendrick's quality who put out material every single year throughout their entire career.

is that album really happening? feels like that picture of them in the studio has been going around for years

Yep! Kendrick confirmed they have a lot more time to work on it now that they've gotten their personal projects out of the way.
So I wouldn't be surprised to see that mid to late 2016.
