Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

Running through different videos on youtube while drunk yesterday lead me to the first track I've heard from J Cole (iirc), worth re-posting as both The Come Up and Friday Night Lights had some killer tracks on them.

I really enjoyed his mixtapes, then he started releasing albums and it went all awry for me.

Three of the best songs on the tape!

@Tyga

I heard a lil lil homie talking reckless in Vibe
Quite a platform you chose, you shoulda kept it inside
Oh you tried, its so childish calling my name on the world stage
You need to act your age and not your girl's age

In refrence to Tyga's girldfriend Kylie Jenner, who just turned 17

@Diddy

Shaq postin' up on n*ggas that I used to have posters of
Real quick man, you couldn't have hated that
Let's be real n*gga you couldn't have made it that

In reference to Diddy apparently hitting him over the fact that Drake 'stole' the 0-100 beat.

@ birdman

Brand new Beretta, can't wait to let it go
Walk up in my label like, where the check though?
Yeah I said it, wouldn't dap you with the left ho

Obviously everything going on between Wayne and Birdman and the fact that Drake dropped this on iTunes to basically get out of his deal with CM.

This n***a Drake doesn't even have the balls to mention Diddy's name. I just listened to the 6 PM in New york joint, not bad.

Yeah, well I don't personally have a problem with it. Drake is good with his responses regardless of whether they are direct or not. "All hits no misses, that's for the married folk" was a good one getting at Jay

Lol,that was quite immature but it was a good diss...Mrs Drizzy is nice with his bars, sometimes i don't get the hate... i won't lie i felt some type of way though, cause HOV is the gawd

Tyga is in a tough situation right now, i mean its not like the lil durk beef where he was able to run to The Game to make a diss track, and you can't come at Drake with a weak diss with terrible bars, the best thing would be to ignore it.... but when you get called the "lil lil homie" i feel like your manhood is on the line and you would be really acting your 17 year old girlfriends age if you don't respond.

Lil boy games. Both these niggas fake as hell with their fabricated streed cred

Tyga yes, Drake not so sure, but could you enlighten me on how he is fake?

They were both raised in upper middle class families. Drake was a childhood star on Nickelodeon on a Canadian kids show called Degrassi: the next generation'. Drake grew up in an affluent neighborhood in Toronto, Canada called Forest Hills with houses like this:

Tyga has admitted to being raised with money. Nothing wrong with that, I just find it funny that both of them have to fake their way to the 'top' with made up street cred. Drake never even used the 'N' word growing up. Real recognize real. These two aint.

Lol i know all that , i just don't know why you are calling drake "fake" because he grew up in a nice neighbourhood, does that discredit him as a rapper? i mean its not like he raps about slinging crack cocaine in the hood or standing on the street corners in the worst part of Toronto.

You can't be a real rapper if you were born rich?

Fake their way to the top? Drakes mix tapes are all about him trying to become the best rapper, he doesn't say anything about having street cred, i don't exactly understand how he is faking tbh, if he is not singing, he is bragging about money cars, girls etc he used to rap about wanting to be at the top (that ambitious rap) now he doesn't anymore so where exactly does the faking come from? In regards to saying N*gga growing up, you would have to have lived with him to know that, besides he has a white mother who raised him alone, i can understand why he wouldn't say N*gga at home.

I've always found rap fans and the attitude towards 'realness' very interesting and troubling. Sometimes I wish the 'realest' rappers weren't so real.

Kanye West couldn't get a record deal because he wasn't real enough, no one wanted to mess with a Polo wearing music producer who made beats, just because he didn't rap about drugs,or violence and he wasn't gangster enough... he went on to release one of the realest albums ever on his debut .

Its 2015 man, a lot of rappers now were just normal kids growing up - Tyler,Mac Miller,J.cole just because you aren't a gangster doesn't mean you are not "real"

You cats obviously don't understand the basic point im making here. Im basically saying they have fabricated street cred and IMO they don't need it to be successful. The majority of rappers do this, but in most cases its just extreme embellishments. Artists can say whatever the hell they want to, it won't stop me having this opinion. These two cats are competent rappers with fake street cred

My point was just a general hot take on 'realness' in rap tbh.

Lol, i have been asking you to explain how Drake's street cred is fake , how exactly does he have a "fake street cred", i don't even think he has street cred, how do you even define street cred? How can you have fake street cred when you are not even from the streets or claim to be ?

His phony persona which i've always heard about and which I saw first hand for the first time at a club in Atlanta called the Compound in 2012 for his bday bash. Have you seen how he acts around his goons? Even people in Toronto accept that their man is over the top with his antics. All I heard was nigga this, nigga that, real niggas and fake niggas etc. It was phony as feck. I accept that artists have an image to maintain but this cat acts and talks like he grew up in the hood, something that I find odd and unnecessary since everyone knows his background. The way I look at it, its probably the pressure by the record label.

Street cred for me is simply just being who you say you are/were and it doesn't have to be negative or about gangbanging. Hiphop is different to other genres because the community started from the underground and as a representation of the culture and lifestyles and struggles of the streets. People pay attention to the things you say. I never said you have to be a gangster to have any credibility in the game. There's a place for everyone with enough talent and hustle to make it. I have nothing against Drake, he just needs to drop the fake shit.

Yeah, i understand what you mean, his antics can sometimes be over the top, but its comes with the money and the fame, ever since he dropped 'Take Care' he has been gassed and rightfully so, there aren't many people in the rap game that can touch him *pause*. His has probably been surrounded by street dudes so much that he thinks he is one of them, and acts like them, it doesn't necessarily mean he has a "fake street cred" per say...95% of rappers out now are not about that life, but they still act like they are... its entertainment - i kind of feel like the only thing that matters now is your rapping ability and content and not your background or your attitude - when i first heard "Headlines" from his take care album there was a line where he said "You gonna hype me up and make me catch a body like that" it was clear to me that he was faking it , but i guess it matched the song, the video and the album... since take care was basically about him being the man.

Then again, there is definitely an element of truth in that line, i mean when you are the greatest thing to come out of Toronto and you become rich and famous, there are definitely going to be street dudes that f with you, and would actually catch a body for you - not to mention he was found by J.Prince jr who is the son of the infamous J.prince - so he is definitely somehow affiliated to some real street dudes, i mean almost everyone knows somebody that is about that life, rich, poor, famous, unknown it doesn't matter we are all connected somehow.

EDIT: A good example would be Eminem, when he became the biggest thing out of detroit, he definitely got love from the street dudes especially Trick Trick who is a self proclaimed godfather or whatever that means.. i mean if you watch the "welcome to detroit" video even the lyrics you would see Em acting like he is about that life and all that, he was acting and sounding tough which matched the whole song... but he wasn't

Nas just like Kendrick grew up in the projects but had no street cred, he wasn't fake but he just didn't partake in all the street activities, but when he raps about the supreme team, pappy mason,Fat cat Lorenzo and the rest he paints the picture like someone who was actually there, but he wasn't - he might be a god on the mic but he wasn't about that life, but he rapped about it though.

Its Entertainment.

Drake looks like such a homo and Tyga will never live that talent show thingy down.

Having said this if someone offered me mean cash to pretend to be a thug and hit so many hot women I wouldn't know what to do with myself, then I would.

Jesus, the new song by Kanye with Sia and some Chi-town kid is fecking garbage, I'm really worried that his next album will be the same shit as Yeezus a.k.a. listen to it once and then dispose in bin.

Yeezus is a solid 8/10 for me

Yep same for me.

@adexkola for me it has a really good rhythm to it, the way he experiments with the sounds used make it great, a lot of the lyrics have some good double entendre's behind them too. I like that it doesn't sound like a typical hip hop album, one thing I appreciate most about Kanye is the fact that each of his albums have a distinctly different sound and purpose to them.

On another note - at first I didn't like the Drake album/mixtape much - listening to it through on the train today for the 3rd time it's really growing on me. You can tell it's not a regular Drake album and some of the songs are definitely throwaways, but I like the switch up it's good to listen to an album where he's not whining about a love lost.

I gave Yeezus a chance, but compared to your average hiphop album, the lyrics were mundane and laughingly basic. I understand he was trying to do something new, but it seems that is an acceptable excuse for releasing subpar content. I feel if an average rock/electronica band released Yeezus, they wouldn't be praised for their innovation. Their project would be written off as a weird phase. He gets too much credit for trying to be innovative, which a lot of hiphop artists before/after him don't get.

I'm willing to listen to it again, but I doubt my opinion will change, it got massive radio play.

Yeezus is a good album by a great hip hop artiste but it doesn't make it a hip hop album

I absolutely agree with this, although i kind of think this can be used in any situation.. for instance if Talib Kweli,Cyhi da prince or Hopsin released the "Blacker the berry" or "i" they wouldn't receive the amount of praise Kendrick is currently receiving.

If Kendrick did something like this the whole internet would go crazy
