College Football & NFL thread 2007/8

DE, Grossman is terrible. But not sure how a better QB makes up a 24 point gap. That's like saying if Buffalo had a better QB they could have beaten NE.

My comment wasn't meant to belittle Dallas though I do enjoy that. Surely you agree though that the difference between the two teams was the Qb. I didn;t watch the game( will do so tonight) so correct me if I'm wrong.

What??? Of course the Bills could have.... Well at least if the QB was Jim Kelly and it was 1991, then we would have definitely beaten the Pats....

That 1991 Pats squad was one of the worst ever. I believe they set a record for ineptitude that season - fewest points scored in a 16 game schedule.

Buffalo had some great players in those days, though I'll gag if I hear another person try to hype Reed better than Irvin. I rooted for them against NYG and the deadSkins.

Its my list and I'll put who I like on it!!!

All joking aside though you do raise good points. They have only had 3 tds in two games which poor by any standards and especially so when you played Buffalo and Oakland. Istill think they will get better though. the other teams I had considered were Houston,Detroit,Washington and Seattle.

You absolutely CANNOT succeed in the NFL by just scoring field goals.

It just doesn't work. You can't even get into the playoffs in this era of high powered offences by just scoring field goals.

Maybe in 1947 you'd be in good stead. Not sixty years on with the speed and accuracy of today's offences and the number of points they rack up.

QB play is a huge advantage. But you also have to look at Chicago's WRs - they have nothing on TO, and Dallas has a top 5 TE in Witten (though Chicago's TE is going to be good). And imagine what Dallas would be doing offensively if Glenn were playing. The first half was a drab - mistakes, penalties, and miscues offensively. Crayton dropped a pass in the end zone and then Berrian dropped a bomb that would have been a TD.

The second half was all Dallas. The Bears secondary was unable to stop Dallas' passing game, which then set up the running game. Dallas had around 450 yards total offense. Meanwhile, the Bears running game never got going and Grossman was forced to make throws, which he can't. Every team should watch what Dallas did in the second half. Jason Garrett is looking to be a good OC.

It's time for Griese in Chicago.

Also read the Bears lost 4 Pro-bowlers on Defense to injury.

3 on defense (Briggs, Harris, Vasher), and a former pro-bowler on offense (Ruben Brown). Mike Brown had already been lost in the opening game.

That's part of the game. Dallas is still missing Ellis, Newman, and Glenn, as well has having lost Ferguson who anchors the defensive line.

Grossman has hot and cold streaks.

The problem is that his confidence seems to be so low right now that he is much more cold than hot. To be fair to him his team were put in a position where suddenly they were having to really chase the game - all due to the defence totally folding on two consecutive drives.

Rex put together a fantastic drive to come back from the first Dallas score, but asking a QB like him to turn around and then single-handedly do it again is a big ask.

The defence let the Bears down big time by suddenly making it 17-10.

Like Eli Manning, Rex's confidence is very fragile. When players start dropping big play balls he somehow manages to attribute that to his own failures rather than the receiver's. Eli is notorious for doing this with Shockey (who can be relied upon to make 2 huge drops every single game) and Plecsico Burris, who drops balls until there is no tomorrow at times.

Rex is not designed for a high powered throwing offence. He is designed for a running offence. Smith asked a lot of him in that drive after the game started to slip away. He made ONE bad decision under pressure which unfortunately for him he was punished for.

If he was Brett Farve and had thrown that hugely costly pick that functionally ended the game he would be praised for going down fighting valiantly until the end, trying desperately to lead the offence singlehandedly (which Rex was being asked to do for long spells).

Rex may be bad, but he is nowhere near as bad as some want to make him out to be.

It's time for Griese in Chicago.

He's not the answer either.

He's 400 years old, he hasn't been decent in an eternity (when you're a QB and you get sent out the door at this stage by John Gruden, you are well and truly shite).

He would be a temporary fix at best. The Bears need to focus on their running game. If Griese was asked to do what Rex was asked to do, and the Bears defence played as they did in this game, Dallas would have rolled over him and gotten a few vital picks as well.

They needed to have bought a young QB to start working into the system - and perhaps should have done that a year ago, but certainly with all of the stick and questions surrounding Rex, to not do so is a serious and potentially catastrophic mistake on Lovie Smith's part.

In this league it takes two years for a new young QB to 'get' the system. When/if Smith drops Rex and goes with young blood (something he now won't be able to do until at least next year) then he has done the club a disservice, and the kid who comes in will struggle for a year or more.

Of course but Denver have more to their game than just field goals. Cutler is a decent Qb and in Walker and Marshall he has decent WRs to throw to. also Travis henry is one of the most underrated backs in the league.

Of course injuries play a part but losing three pro-bowlers on Defense in the middle of a game against a team with an explosive offense like Dallas is going to seriously suck. Add the fact that your offense is shite and you have a tick in the L column.

Why not trade for Culpepper when he was available. Warner just came on and had a superb showing for Arizona against the Ravens D sothe oldies can still survive in the league. just look at Garcia.

Andre Reed better than Michael Irvin??? As a Bills fan I can say that is silly. The Playmaker was a game changer. Reed was great but Irvin was better.

Desert Eagles Week 3 Power Rankings

1) Indianapolis Colts: Tough wins at resurgent titans was followed up with another against the Texans. Both teams beat the Colts last year and Indy is still looking good for a repeat trip to the Superbowl. A home game against a tough Denver secondary beckons in week 4.

2) New England blockbusters: 3 games played. 3 wins. 38 points scored in each. 35 points against. this NE teamis looking very good. TomBrady and Randy Moss should continue their good partnership against a Cincinnati D that has given up an average of 30 plus points and 400 plus yards.

3) Dallas Cowboys:
There is a new king in the NFC. The win over the Bears confirmed Dallas's status as the team to beat in the conference. Tony Romo is playing well. T.O. hasn't been a whiny cnut and all is well with America's team. A nice home game against a struggling Rams team that will be missing Stephen Jackson and maybe Marc Bulger should guarantee a 4-0 for the Cowboys.

4) Pittsburgh Steelers: When your defense holds opponents to an average of under 10 points, you will win football games. The Steelers dismantled a poor 49ers offense and with Willie Parker broke down a solid defense for a comfortable win. Two more NFC West teams in Arizona and Seattle will be their next opponents and if Pittsburgh can stay undefeated after that they will confirm their status amongst the AFC elite.

5) Baltimore Ravens: Kyle Boller has taken up the role of Relief Quarterback. When Steve Mcnair feels worn out Boller came on to closeout the game. The Ravens D hasn't been as shut down as predicted though and that could spell trouble for Baltimore as they face a gung-ho offense in Cleveland. Willis Mcghee has been great but need to find the end-zone for often to help out this Ravens Offense.

Green Bay Packers : Its 4th and long with 40 seconds left in the 4th quarter. Brett Favre and the Packers are 9-6 down in what has been a bruiser of a game in Minnesota. the Vikings fans are loud and baying for blood. The Minnesota D has shut down the packers running game. Here comes the snap. Favre drops back and throws a bomb down the left side of the field to Donald Driver. Touchdown! Packers win and Favre breaks Dan Marino' touchdown record in the homeof his greatest rivals. Could happen.;)

7) Tennese Titans: The AFC South is the only division in football where all four teams have a winning record and a plus points difference.Vince Young is the real deal and the Titans have a great running game to complement a fast and furious D. At the end of the season Hollywood might start production on Remember The Titans part 2.

8) Houston Texans: Mario Williams is finally showing why he was picked number 1 overall last year. Houston ran the Colts close while missing their star receiver. With Matt Shaub being solid even the absence of Ahman green shouldn't be enough for the Texans to go 4-0 for the first time in franchise history when they visit 0-3 Atlanta in week 4.

9) Seattle Seahawks :
For the first time this season Seattle finally clicked. Deon Branch and Nate Burleson looked like quality receivers. Shawn Alexander had his moments of magic and Matt Hasselback carved through Cincinnati's secondary like it was thanksgiving. The 2-1 Hawks meet the 2-1 niners in San Francisco in a match-up that should be an early marker of who is the team to beat in the NFC West.

10) Jacksonville Jaguars: Jacksonville held the Denver Broncos who were the league leaders in yards rushing and boasted Travis Henry ( league leading rusher in yards) to a total of 47 yards rushing. David Garrard seems to be growing in confidence and even though Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew haven't hit top form yet the Jaguars are still winning games. A bye week beckons in week 4.

Insane finish in tonight's MNF game. Dallas steals a victory from Buffalo with a late touchdown, onside kick recovery, and a 53 yard field goal as time expired. Buffalo wasn't great offensively or defensively - Dallas tried to give the game away. Romo had 5 interceptions (two returned for TDs) and a fumble, gifting Buffalo tons of ball & field possession. Buffalo also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. That's 21 points off returns versus 3 from the offense. Dallas could have cut the lead to 2 points late in the 4th quarter when Newman intercepted Edwards and had 90 yards of open field towards the Bills end zone. Newman was caught near the Bills 30 yard line largely due to his not being fully fit (still nursing a bone/leg injury limiting his speed). As he was tackled the ball was jarred loose but recovered around the Bills 20 by a Cowboys player. Romo promptly threw an interception in the end zone killing that drive but Dallas' D stepped and forced a punt. That led to the crazy finish. Romo's touchdown pass to Crayton with :20 left cut the score to 24-22. The two-point conversion attempt to Owens was broken up albeit by an illegal play the officials somehow missed (a defender can not have his back to the ball and throw his arms up in the face of the receiver - that is face guarding and is illegal; he also clearly interfered with Owens' arms). Justice was served when Dallas recovered the onside kick at the Bills 47, and after an overturned catch (correctly reversed), Romo completed two short passes to get Dallas to the Bills 35. As Folk drilled a 53 yarder to win the game, the officials ruled that Juaron called timeout before the snap, an insane rule that I think coaches will have dropped next season. The kick was played again and was good - a new Folk hero is born in Texas!

How 'bout dem Cowboys?

Just watched the highlights. Seemed like a great game!!!

In a few weeks history will be re-written and Romo will have led them down the field for a glorious Farve-esque come-back.

He's played 15 fecking games and they want him in Canton. I hope he loses his legs in a freak yachting accident.

FFS, Eli hadn't played one game in the NFL and he was Canton bound by NYG fans. Brady played an altered offensive scheme when he took over for an injured Bledsoe in 2001 and he was suddenly the next greatest thing. Fortunately for him and his fans, he's proven to be the goods since that magical season. See Brees circa 2006, Mitchell circa 1993, Rypien circa 1991, etc. Sometimes the QB goes on to have a solid or great career sometimes they bomb out soon. Romo will be around for a long time. Be prepared for it.

This happens to many QBs. It's the most glamorous position in sports. Especially for the Cowboys.

Can my poor Bills find any more ways to lose a game??? Until Monday, I thought that would be impossible.....

I think this loss was even more unrealistic than the Music City Miracle. I just hope Dallas plays NE tight. I can't bear the thought of NE destroying Dallas by 3-4 touchdowns. I'd be crushed. I hope it's close either way, but of course I'll be cheering on my Boys. I'm afraid that Brady will have a field day against Dallas' injured/weakened secondary. Newman is still not 100% fit, Reeves is nothing better than a #4 CB on most clubs, and Henry is probably not going to play but if he does he's not gonna have the speed or agility to go man-to-man (and I doubt he'd play more than 20 snaps). I think Hamlin covering the deep routes will be the key. I also have a feeling Roy W and D Ware are going to have great performances. I see a high scoring shootout and although my heart says take Dallas, my head says NE 34-27. Unless Julius Jones finally has a good game.

I cant remember it being this clear cut since 1998 or so, its basically the Patriots, Colts, and Cowboys and everybody else this year

pats @ cowboys today, 1st quarter over, pats 14-0 up. thought the cowboys would alteast push the pats, but they've been feckinh shit so far

Looks a great game now. NE was just gifted a phantom pass interference call to the Dallas 1 then promptly scored. Moss ran into Watkins and the ref called pass interference on Newman who never touched him and had backed off him. Watkins was holding his ground as Moss ran into him. Case of the big name player getting a phantom call in his favor. The side judge threw the flag while the back judge did not. The back judge had the clear view. On top of that, the ball wasn't catchable for Moss but it was for Watkins as he had the position. Ridiculous call.

God New England were good, that Moss pickup for a 4th round pick is one of the steals of the century and Brady is class even though I hate the douchebag

Nice professionalism from Belicheat there... running up the score with :20 left. Very nice, asshole.

Wade's decision to kick a field goal from the 5 with 10 minutes to go and down 14 was stupid. The Dallas D hadn't shut down NE on but one or two series so how did he think they'd get the ball back down 11? fecking stupid. Go for the touchdown, cut the lead to 7 and gain momentum. If you don't get a TD, big deal. 3 points doesn't do much there.

The only team I can see beating NE is Indianapolis. That said, I'd love to get NE in the Super Bowl and see what happens.

He (Adrian Peterson) got a lot of shit here in the states before the draft about his injuries and running style (upright which is more prone to RBs in general) but I always thought he was a gem I wanted the Broncs to go after him.

I always thought he was a player, but a play I saw v. Iowa State last year made me think he was a future superstar. A little story about AP, his father was incarcerated his entire life or most of it until late 2006, finally in mid october he finall ygot to see his son play live and in person for the first time ever. In the 4th quarter despite the lead OU held AP stayed in teh game cause he wanted to get a couple scores for his pops. On his last run for several months Peterson rumbled about 60 yards and sidewindered into the endzone breaking his collarbone in the process (last part of the clip), thats pimp, respeck

Peterson looks good but it's just a matter of time before the injury bug strikes him again. He was constantly injured at OU. The Luis Saha of the NFL potentially.

This is not true for him only, its true for all RBs, they only last so long. They take far more hits than any other player, mainly below or at the knee. I feel if you can get 4-5 good years out of a RB you did a good job. Some backs make it 10-15 years, but usually by their early thirties they have lost some strength and speed anyway. And Terrell Davis was the Louis Saha of the NFL after he got injured in 1999, he was injured the rest of his career, but that said he's a Hall of Famer imo.

Look at AP's college career... he was constantly banged up. More so than many RBs. It was so consistent that it affected his draft stock.

TD had 2 good seasons and 2 great seasons but sadly the injury ruined his HOF chances. Longevity is weighed heavily by balloters.

Finally someone is talking sense. The Oklahoma trolls piss me off with their AD campaign.

Go Buffs!

Still mediocre for the niners. the offense really needs to improve. Run D also needs to step it up.
