College Football & NFL thread 2007/8

Very impressed by the Patriots. Moss looked back to his best. Its early days but I doubt they are many people looking beyond them, the colts and the chargers for the superbowl. On the NFC the Eagles looked extremely poor in the passing game. It is clear what a top receiver like T.O. would do to that team. Romo looked good though that Cowgirls D looks dodgy. Seattle also limpressed though it was against a piss poor Tampa team.

Tonight two divisional battles as the Ravens face the Bengals in a defence vs offense match up while the Niners face the Cards in what should be a good indicator of how the division will stack up come play-off time.

However much of a cnut he is, it isn't a co-incidence that with him in the team you went to the superbowl.

In a number of games running up to the Superbowl he was on the sideline with his injury. The team won without him. He played great in the SB, I'll give him his due there, and his work ethic is outstanding. But, he's cancer. Ciao bella T.O.!

2 great tds in the Dallas win yesterday. They areloving him in Dallas right now.

As well they should. Just wait until Romo falls out of his favour though.

T.O. could have owned Philadelphia when he played there had he not gotten poisonous. They loved him until he forgot that team comes first. He's quite a selfish person in that regard and I don't care if he sets the NFL record for touchdowns, receptions or whatever, it's a good thing he's playing elsewhere.

As a niners fan I know how you feel about him better than most. Shame he couldn't have the attitude of someone like Holt, would have given the great Jerry rice a run for his money if that was the case imo.

I agree. But his personality hasn't allowed him to mature into a real man who understands the team concept completely.

He blasted Garcia mercilessly in SF but Garcia eventually ended up in Philly and largely saved the season for the Eagles with an out-of-his-sneakers run of wins after McNabb got hurt to put them in the playoffs after starting 5-6.

Was Garcia that bad for the Niners? Of course not. T.O. was just up to his tricks.

Being a Boys fan and in the know, I think you'll be shocked to learn that TO took Romo under his wing when he arrived. TO often befriends the backup players and now Romo is the starting QB. They have a great relationship.

As for DE's comments on the D - not many defenses will play up-to-par when the top cover corner is missing (Newman, being in the top 3 CBs in the league) and losing the run stuffing DT (Ferguson - torn biceps = most likely out for the season). The Boys will probably sign a DT to replace him, but they will be losing a huge component to that DL. I figure they'll sign Remi Ayodele who was in camp with Dallas, then released on the final cut, signed by Atlanta but released again. I wouldn't mind them taking a look at veterans Joe Salave'a and Jimmy Kennedy.

Romo looks quite good, but he has many weapons around him. The OL looked marginally better than last season and I expect it to get better. There are rumors that Dallas is talking to Reche Caldwell's agent. If Glenn elects season ending knee surgery, Caldwell might sign on. Even if Glenn remains active, it's possible Caldwell might sign. But seeing how Crayton and Hurd played, I don't think signing a WR is priority at the moment.

You can't be serious.

You can't be serious.

Newman is definitely in the top 3 cornerbacks in the league. All the GMs, scouts, and coaches in the league rave about the guy. He shuts down one side of the field. He doesn't get impressive INT stats - opposing OCs don't scheme plays to his side. He's that good. Google it. I don't have to - I see it weekly and hear the pundits and scouts talk about him.

He also didn't give up a single TD in 2005, and I believe only gave up 2 last season. He had a streak of something like 20 consecutive games without getting burned for a TD by an opposing receiver.

Off the top of my head I can name 5 better: Bailey, Hall, Clements, Barber, Sheppard.

Newman is good, no doubt. top ten material definitey but I highlydoubt anybody apart from a Boys fan would put him in the top 3.

Regarding cornerbacks Bailey is in a class by himself. Hall, Clements (Good work Bills :annoyed:), and Sheppard are all up there, but someone who shouldn't be forgotten is Charles Woodson. I know his last 2 seasons in Oakland were ruined by injuries, but he had a great season last year in Green Bay (9 intereceptions). He should definitely be considered in that top 5 list.

Off the top of my head I can name 5 better: Bailey, Hall, Clements, Barber, Sheppard. Hall is often cited as one of the most over-rated in the league. Sheppard is comical to even compare him to Newman. Clements is good but not better than Newman. If Newie had been a UFA in March, he'd have been rated the top corner. Barber is well past his best days. Only Bailey is better in the list. Leave the biasness out. You dislike the Boys and therefore your observations are already slanted.

Newman is good, no doubt. top ten material definitey but I highlydoubt anybody apart from a Boys fan would put him in the top 3.

I suppose opposing GMs, coaches, and players, not to mention pundits, are all Boys fans then.

Yes I clearly lost credibility by rating Asante Samuel (12 picks) and Asomagha(8 picks), ahead of Newman.:wenger:

All this talk about the media and coaches rating players can be found about any good player so don't act like Newman is special. Peyton Manning says Mathis is the best CB he's played against so what does that make him??

Give some facts to back your statement not random bollocks.

I may dislike the Cowgirls but I can have an objective opinion about them. Like I said Newman is top 10 good but not definitely top 3 in the league as you claim.

coming from a pats fan, samuel is not that great. he had an above average year and caught some lucky INTs. I wouldn't necessarily judge CBs on that stat alone; sometimes the pigskin works in mysterious ways. don't get me wrong, he's a good player but he's not worth the money he was asking for and I think he realized that. he's not strong enough in the open field and I don't think he's that speedy either.

So you base a player's ability on stats. I suppose that would make Lampard a better player than Scholes in your assessment. Or John Terry ahead of Rio Ferdinand since the former scores more goals.

I think I'll listen to GMs, coaches, etc., over your opinion.

I'm not shocked at all and I don't doubt they get along great - for now. Owens has a very friendly manner and makes friends fast. T.O. and Donovan McNabb had the very same friendship at first, putting lots of practice time together before their initial season together. It paid off too and T.O. was on his way to becoming a Philadelphia legend. Somehow the "friendship" went south and Owens was determined to drag anything connected to the Eagles into the muck with him.

If he suddenly becomes a model citizen and doesn't mope when your team is struggling and he's not getting the ball then you've got a real find there.

I just wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I agree about Samuel being good but not top 5 material, thats why he was not on the first list I came up with. I do think you are underplaying hm a bit due to the saga in the off-season. I would bet you would be a bit more generous in your praise if we were mid-way through last season.

Your football analogy is stupid and doesn't cross over. Defenses in the NFL are more about units and less about the individual. Look at the Patriots for an example. Barca and Madrid have both been linked with Lampard and their owners and coaches have come out and said he is a wonderful player. So since you base your opinion on coaches and GMs, I would assume you would rate Lampard over Scholes.

Give me a reason apart from 'I've personally seen and heard it so it must be true' andit might make your argument a little more substantive.

Regardless of any of the merits for who belongs in the Top 5 corners, they're all quality CBs.

But I hope Kevin Everett of my Bills' injury will not cause paralysis and that he is able to make a speedy recovery. Looked like a pretty standard collision, but it just goes to show that American football truly is a game of inches.

Cinci beat the Ravens in a close game 27-20.

My niners are leading by three with the fourth quarter about to start.

4 points down with 3 minutes to go.

We need a special drive up the field to win this one.

YESSS!!! What a win!. Well done Alex Smith.

Edit: Was a poor game tbh and we need to improve if we are going to challenge for the division. The offense looked out of sync before the final drive and Alex smith really pulled a rabbit out of the hat on this one. A win is a win though and next week in St.Louis will be tough. Or defense especially against the pass was impressive though.

Here is the latest on the Kevin Everett situation:

Doctor: Bills' Everett likely to be paralyzed

Posted: September 10, 2007

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Kevin Everett sustained a "catastrophic" and life-threatening spinal-cord injury while trying to make a tackle during the Buffalo Bills' season opener and is unlikely to walk again, the surgeon who operated on him said Monday.

"A best-case scenario is full recovery, but not likely," orthopedic surgeon Andrew Cappuccino said. "I believe there will be some permanent neurologic deficit."

Everett was hurt Sunday after he ducked his head while tackling the Denver Broncos' Domenik Hixon during the second-half kickoff. Everett dropped face-first to the ground after his helmet hit Hixon high on the left shoulder and side of the helmet.

Cappuccino noted the 25-year-old reserve tight end did have touch sensation throughout his body and also showed signs of movement. But he cautioned that Everett's injury was life-threatening because he was still susceptible to blood clots, infection and breathing failure.

Everett is in the intensive care unit of Buffalo's Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, where he is under sedation and breathing through a respirator as doctors wait for the swelling to lessen. Cappuccino said it will take up to three days to determine the severity of the injury and the recovery process.

Cappuccino repaired a break between the third and fourth vertebrae and also alleviated the pressure on the spinal cord. In reconstructing his spine, doctors made a bone graft and inserted a plate, held in by four screws, and also inserted two small rods, held in place by another four screws.

Doctors, however, weren't able to repair all the damage.

Bills punter Brian Moorman immediately feared the worst when Everett showed no signs of movement as he was placed on a backboard and, with his head and body immobilized, carefully loaded into an ambulance.

"It brought tears to my eyes," Moorman said after practice. He said the sight of Everett's motionless body brought back memories of Mike Utley, the former Detroit Lions guard, who was paralyzed below the chest after injuring his neck in a collision during a 1991 game.

Utley, Moorman recalled, at least was able to give what's become a famous "thumbs up" sign as he was taken off the field. Everett didn't.

"That's what I was waiting for, and that's what everybody else was waiting for," Moorman said. "And to have to walk back to the sideline and not see that made for a tough time."

Utley, who lives in Washington state, was saddened to see replays of Everett's collision.

"I'm sorry this young man got hurt," Utley told The AP. "It wasn't a cheap shot. It was a great form tackle and that's it."

Cappuccino said Everett was alert and aware of the extent of his injuries.

"I told Kevin that the chances for a full neurologic recovery were bleak, dismal," said Cappuccino, who works for the Bills as a consultant, specializing in spinal surgery. "I was honest with him, and he told me, 'Do everything you can to help me."'

Cappuccino received permission to operate from Everett's mother, Patricia Dugas, who spoke by phone from her home in Houston. She and other family members arrived in Buffalo on Monday.

Buffalo's 2005 third-round draft pick out of Miami, Everett missed his rookie season because of a knee injury. He spent most of last year playing special teams. He was hoping to make an impact as a receiver.

The Bills now attempt to refocus while preparing to play at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

"It's difficult because you know the situation," said running back Anthony Thomas, one of Everett's best friends on the team. "We have to move on. But he'll always be in our thoughts and in our prayers."

Quarterback J.P. Losman said it was difficult to concentrate during practice.

"It seems like every couple of seconds that go by it's always popping into your head," Losman said. "Going through a walk-through, we're looking for him, wanting to hear his voice."

Coach Dick Jauron said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell called him Sunday evening, offering the league's support.

"We honor ourselves by our work, and we honor Kevin by moving forward and working while never forgetting Kevin and never getting him out of our thoughts and prayers," Jauron said. "We're going to wait and see what the outcome is here and we're really hoping and praying for the best."

Terrible stuff and can only hope he recovers.

Hey D E,

Another Niners fan here, despite being born slightly east of the Bay area...London, UK.

Have followed them since 86, which was when I first started watching the football on TV over in the UK. So have

Agree with your thoughts regarding the game. They're repeating it tonight so I will catch it in its entireity then, but saw the final drive this morning.

Great to see Smith lead them down the field. I think we had 30 yards total offense in the second half up until the final drive, so still plenty of work to be done here!

But I think this drive will give the team confidence ahead of next week and hopefully they can build on this great result.

Alos share your thoughts regarding Everett. I for one do not begrudge these guys the salaries they make, seeing as their livliehood can be taken away from them at any instance. Although it appears unlikely, I wish him the best and hope he makes a full recovery.

Had a couple of close calls with the Smith scramble and the fumble on the 1.

I'm delighted with our pass defense though. Clements was awesome and we kept Bolduin and Fitzgerald extremely quiet. Should bode well when we have the Rams and the cards in our Division. Willis had a great game as did Harris.

the O-line was poor though and our offense worries me. we were weak against the blitzes and were lucky the Cards decided to switch to a prevent D for that last drive. We can't expect Gore to carry us like last year. Vernon Davis was very quiet and like you said until that final drive Smith was having a shocker. some of the play-calling on offense was just plain weird.

Anyways shareyour thoughtsafter you watch the replay.

Agreed. The unions will no doubt be opposed to it though.

The way things are going though the pay-outs will keep increasing especially if the player is a potential franchise Qb.

Don't see why the union would oppose - the veterans would gain more money from such a cap. I think the veterans would be all for it and they control the union, not the rookies. The agents would be against it but they have no voice in the union. I've even heard some players talk about it. Of course, some of them got their big money as first round picks too. Pot meet kettle.

The rookie salary cap is about the only thing working in the NBA at the moment.

They haven't only been accused, the Jets security caught them video taping the signals made by the defensive coaches to the players. Once you know the signals and then see the play, you know what's coming.

Report: Doctor says Everett has voluntary movement of arms, legs

Kevin Everett might walk again after all.

The doctor who performed the spinal surgery on Everett told Buffalo TV station WIVB on Tuesday that Everett has voluntary movement of his arms and legs and as a result he is optimistic that Everett will walk again.

Dr. Andrew Cappuccino told WIVB that Everett's sedation levels were lowered on Tuesday, allowing him to respond to verbal commands. WIVB also reported that Everett's latest MRI shows only a small amount of swelling on his spinal cord.

On Monday, Cappuccino said that Everett sustained a "catastrophic" and life-threatening spinal-cord injury and was unlikely to walk again.

Sources: Goodell determines Pats broke rules by taping Jets' signals

NFL Determines Pats Violated Rules

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.

NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said on Tuesday that no official decision has been made and that the club has not been notified.

The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.

Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

Uh Oh... Someone got caught red-handed......

So they'll lose a draft pick or two or three... whooptedo. I guess this shows just how bad Belichick wanted to beat Mangini. So badly he resorted to stealing signals. How pathetic.

The NFL doesn't do shit against clubs for cheating. San Francisco was found guilty of cheating the salary cap during the 1994 season (the year the club signed all those veteran free agents to beat Dallas). The were fined like a million dollars and lost a draft pick. Had this been a major college program, their wins and title would have been stripped.

Speaking of cheating, why does Merriman's steroid use get swept under the carpet by so many? What's to say his sacks weren't the result of the advantage he gained? The NFL should have revoked his pro-bowl invite and removed him from defensive player of the year voting. Instead, he's received applause from pundits and analysts, as if he never cheated. He's even done some commercials! If he played baseball, he'd be public enemy #1. Or for the Cowboys.

yeah, people seem to make less of a deal when NFL players do that stuff than for baseball. but when a star player is having such a big year, then in the middle of said year is found to be guilty of steroid use... is this not a big issue?

as for the pats thing, I'll wait to see what the whole issue is before making comment. obviously I'm not thrilled that the team resorted to that, but why would we need to cheat at all when we were already gonna kill the jets...

The Pats not only were taping the Jets signals, but they rigged up a non-green dot helmet with a radio in it?

For feck's sake...

Fantastic games last night for the neutral. This season has been amazing both in college and pro ball in the opening weeks.

Great news about Everett, hopefully his condition steadily improves.

About the Pats, why the feck do they keep doing it? Its not the first time and they should be given more than a slap on the wrist this time. So much for all that bullshit about the classiest organization in pro sports.

were they actually caught with proof previously? I can't even remember it. I wish I knew more of the details... of course I am a pats fan so my opinion here means shite, but I just find it so hard to believe that a guy like Belichick would really go through with this.

regardless, now twats all over the world will refuse to accept any past or future success from the patriots solely for this reason. this annoys me.
