College Football & NFL thread 2007/8

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury defended Michael Vick, calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting.

Marbury spoke Monday about the federal dogfighting conspiracy charges against Vick while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y.

"I think it's tough," Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors."

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. He also faces possible prosecution in Virginia.

"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down," Marbury said. "I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation."

How dumb is this guy?

Dumb enough to call himself the best point guard in the nba a couple of years ago. The guys a joke and every team he plays for, he also turns them into a joke except for the time that he was in minny with KG.

Switching to NFL, here are my predictions which will no doubt be off-course when all is said and done.

NFC East
Dallas: 10-6 - if Romo is good, Boys win division, if he's bad, Boys struggle; pass rush will be improved, CB depth is a concern
Philly: 10-6 - McNabb will surely get hurt again but this team is very balanced; another big year for Westbrook
Washington: 8-8 - overspent in free agency again, but perhaps they'll get it right this time; if Dallas slips up, Skins move up
NY Giants: 5-11 - in-fighting, no leadership, no Barber, Eli is no Peyton, Strahan whining, Coughlin still there - nuff said

Agree with that. I tip Mcnabb to have a great year though.

NFC Central
Chicago: 12-4 - great D; easy division (Southlake Carroll would finish 2nd); can Benson shoulder the load?
Green Bay: 8-8 - great LB corps on improved D; Favre is in good condition; is OL good enough?
Detroit: 6-10 - could make a big jump if D plays well; Kitna should put up good fantasy numbers
Minnesota: 3-13 - I really want to go to the Mall of the Americas someday before I die; speaking of death, what is that stench in
the Metrodome? (Answer: the Vikings season)

 at the Vikings joke. I say Detroit over GB for second place.

NFC South
New Orleans: 11-5 - was '06 a fluke? I don't think so; this offense is explosive, but the D gives up too many big plays
Carolina: 8-8 - was '06 a fluke or has Carolina peaked? D should be better this term but how about some offense boys?
Tampa Bay: 7-9 - could make playoff push or be out by November; they overpaid for Garcia
Atlanta: 6-10 - trading Schaub turned out a masterstroke; Harrington might put up good numbers - they'll be behind ALOT

Atlanta 6 wins??? No fecking way.

NFC West
Seattle: 10-6 - they still have a good nucleus of players; is Alexander on the downside now? how will the D play?
San Francisco: 9-7 - If Smith can take next step, this team could win the division; D looks solid
St Louis: 7-9 - coin flip here - this team could win 5 games or 10 games; D is terrible; O is good
Arizona: 6-10 - love the overhype they're receiving; the fact still remains they are the Cardinals; no OL; little running game

Fair assessment for a tough Division to call.

AFC East
New England: 12-4 - went the Yankees route and bought big; should work; can Moss hold up? Why Stallworth?
NY Jets: 8-8 - I tip them to be this season's surprise dropoff; will Pennington play a full year? won't surprise opponents this time
Miami: 7-9 - easiest schedule in the league; solid D, little O; could surprise if things go well early on
Buffalo: 4-12 - hey, at least they're not losing Super Bowls these days

Can't argue with the Patsin first place. Miami could suprise.

AFC Central
Baltimore: 11-5 - the D will hold most opponents under 17, can the O make enough plays to win? big year for McGahee?
Cincinnati: 10-6 - if the D steps up the Bengals could steal the division; Palmer will have a HUGE year
Pittsburgh: 7-9 - Ben R is overrated, the D is not like days of old, the OL is aging, but the Steelers could surprise
Cleveland: 5-11 - thank you for a top 5 pick in 2008; Quinn by week 6? Sad franchise

Palmer,Ocho, Rudi and Housh against the Ravens D.

AFC South
Indianapolis: 12-4 - despite a few defractions, this team is still the class of this division; very few flaws
Jacksonville: 10-6 - cutting Leftwich was a shock, can Gerrard carry this team? D is good, running game fantastic
Tennessee: 7-9 - Young will experience growing pains this season; Fisher is too good to remain here
Houston: 4-12 - what good is Schaub if the OL can't protect him? At least Carr won't be the scapegoat this season

Easy pickings for the Colts. Similar to the Bears in that the rest of their division will be lucky to break even.
AFC West
San Diego: 11-5 - they'll survive the coaching defections; no Marty = playoff win! Let's see how Merriman plays off the 'roids
Denver: 9-7 - I have a feeling they might struggle this season; can Cutler handle the pressure? the D is solid
Oakland: 7-9 - if the QB play is consistent, the O should score 20 regularly, add in a good D and the Raiders could surprise
Kansas City: 6-10 - who's the QB? History shows a RB struggles after a 400 carry season; OL has many holes

Wild Card Games:
Dallas defeats San Francisco:nono:
Philadelphia defeats Seattle
San Diego defeats Cincinnati
Baltimore defeats Jacksonville

Divisional Playoffs:
Chicago defeats Philadelphia
New Orleans defeats Dallas
New England defeats Baltimore
San Diego defeats Indianapolis

Conference Championships:
New Orleans defeats Chicago
San Diego defeats New England

Super Bowl XLII:
San Diego defeats New Orleans, 30-20
MVP: LaDanian Tomlinson

Superlatives:
NFL MVP: Peyton Manning, Indianapolis
Offensive Player: LaDanian Tomlinson, San Diego
Defensive Player: Julius Peppers, Carolina
Offensive Rookie: Calvin Johnson, Detroit
Defensive Rookie: Reggie Nelson, Jacksonville
Coach of Year: Mike Nolan, San Francisco

I would go with:

MVP: Stephen Jackson, Rams.
Offensive player: P Manning, Colts
Defensive player: L Briggs, Chicago
Offensive Rookie: A Peterson, Vikings
Defensive Rookie: P Willis, 49ers
Coach of the Year: Mike Nolan, 49ers.

stupid question but can someone explain what AFC and NFC mean? Is it like the premiership and division 1 (championship)

No.

Originally there was only the NFL but some teams started an expansion league after being refused entry to the original NFL called the AFL. Ultimately the two leagues merged to form the current NFL.

Clemson fans shouldn't had run onto the field after thier win over Florida State. Makes them look small time IMO.

Every been to "Death Valley?" Clemson is small time/small town USA.
On the other hand, running out on the field isn't about beating FSU, it's about putting down all those moronic sports writers who overrate Bobby Bowden and his Seminoles every year.

I know Clemson isn't the biggest town, but that doesn't mean there not trying to bulid up their Football program.

Florida State is terrible and you're program looks small time when you're fans run onto the field after beating them.

Peyton Manning was finally able to lead the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl title last season. Drew Brees would like the same for himself and the New Orleans Saints this year.

The 2007 NFL season opens Thursday night as Manning and the Colts begin defense of their title when they host the Saints in a matchup of teams with the potential to meet again in February.

After winning 12 or more games in four straight seasons and reaching the AFC title game in 2003, Manning and the Colts finally claimed a Super Bowl championship by beating the Chicago Bears 29-17 last February in Miami. It was the Colts' second title in franchise history and first since moving to Indianapolis in 1984.

It also - at least for the time being - quieted Manning's critics who felt the future Hall of Famer was unable to lead his team to a title.

Manning, who completed 65 percent of his passes for 4,397 yards, 31 touchdowns and a career-low nine interceptions during the 2006 regular season, was 25-for-38 for 247 yards with a touchdown and an interception to earn Super Bowl MVP honors.

Though some pressure is off, Manning might have an even tougher task as the Colts look to become the ninth team to win consecutive Super Bowls.

With four starters gone via free agency and three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tarik Glenn retired, Indianapolis is taking a back seat to New England and San Diego as the favorite to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLII in Arizona on Feb. 3, 2008.

"It's uncharted territory for most of us," said Manning, who was 20-of-25 for 314 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in a 55-21 win over New Orleans on Sept. 28, 2003, in the teams' most recent meeting. "All we really know how to do is to work hard and get on the same page. That's all we've done, that's all I've ever known."

New Orleans, meanwhile, has become one of the favorites in the NFC to reach its first Super Bowl after an improbable and emotional run in 2006 ended with a 39-14 loss at Chicago in the conference championship game.

Coming off a 3-13 season in 2005 and the lingering effects Hurricane Katrina left on the Gulf Coast area, New Orleans finished 10-6, won the NFC South title and captivated not only a city, but a nation.

Behind Brees, the runner-up to San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson for the NFL MVP, New Orleans led the league in total offensive yards (6,387), passing yards (4,503) and scored a franchise-best 416 points.

"I still feel like we've only scratched the surface as an offense," said Brees, who in his first year with the Saints led the league in passing with a career-high 4,418 yards. "We've got a lot of weapons and we've got a lot of balls to be spread around. I'm excited about the possibilities and the opportunity we have."

The Saints will get that opportunity against an Indianapolis defense with two new starters at cornerback - Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden - to replace Nick Harper and Jason David (now in New Orleans), who were lost in free agency.

Also playing elsewhere is defensive tackle Corey Simon and linebacker Monte Reagor, while defensive tackle Anthony McFarland was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Hard-hitting safety Bob Sanders appears healthy after missing 12 games in 2007 because of injuries and 6-foot-2, 296-pound rookie Ed Johnson is slated to replace McFarland up front.

"I think we are a little faster in some areas and I think we're playing faster," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "We look to be more physical, which is a good thing."

The Colts biggest concern last season was their inability to stop the run and it could be the same in 2007, but there appears to be improvement.

Indianapolis allowed 5.3 yards per carry and was last in the league against the run in 2006, but yielded 4.1 yards in the playoffs and 3.2 during the preseason.

While the defense looks to improve, Pro Bowl receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne - who combined for 181 receptions and 21 TDs last season -- will help Manning.

Second-year running back Joseph Addai, who rushed for 1,081 yards on 226 carries in 2006 in an offense that averaged 26.7 points and recorded 4,308 passing yards - second to New Orleans - has a season to build on.

Manning is also confident rookie Tony Ugoh will play well in Glenn's place.

Though the Saints don't have the track record of the Colts' offense, they have the potential to be just as potent for years to come.

In addition to Brees, who threw for 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and led the team to a 6-2 road record, perennial 1,000-yard rusher Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush work well in the backfield.

McAllister rushed for 1,057 yards and 10 TDs in 2006, and Bush finished an impressive rookie season with a team-leading 88 catches for 742 yards, while rushing for 565 yards on 155 carries.

Receiver Marques Colston is no longer the little-known talent he was during his rookie season when he caught 70 passes for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns.

Defensively, the Saints finished second in the league by allowing 232.6 yards per game and could improve with the additions of David and linebacker Brian Simmons through free agency.

It all leaves the Saints with some lofty expectations.

"What has happened in previous years isn't necessarily a predictor of what will happen this season," said Saints coach Sean Payton, the 2006 NFL Coach of the Year. "I feel comfortable that this team understands it's a different season. The goal that we set out for last year we fell short of, in regards to playing for a championship. Yet, those are the right types of goals that you set. I think our players understand that and will be able to handle that."

Are you ready for some football??

So any predictions for tonight??

I think the colts will win by 10.

Should be interesting to see Duece and Bush against the Indy run defense.
Also can Colsten(spelling) carry on from his great rookie year and will Addai be able to handle all the carries he will get.

Can't fecking wait.

Tends to happen at many schooles when they knock of the big dog or a rival or win a big game. I suppose that makes many schools "small time."

FSU aren't a big dog program anymore. Why they were ranked before the season was laughable.

Why the big secret?? Unless you support Tampa!

Have I hit the nail on the head?

Hopefully Lee Evans will have a great year though. He is on my fantasy team.

Ok lets do picks for the season:

FresnoBob- Giants

Noy- Patriots

MrMarcello- Cowboys

Mehro- Texans

ecantona7- Packers

RC- Bills

Stobzilla- Eagles

Desert Eagle- 49ers

The rest submit your picks before the first game starts.

Colts are crusing. Manningand Addai looking great. and the Run defense has been superb.

Pennypacker are you picking the Saints for the season?

FFS Saints what are you doing to my picks

Colts really sending out a message to the rest of the NFL that they aren't giving up that crown without a fight. With the rest of their games against easy teams tillweek 9 against the Pats, another undefeated hype filled season beckons.

I haven't enjoyed a season opener that much in a long time.

College was nice too, what with Michigan being completely humiliated and Florida State pummelled yet again.

Life is good.

Yep.

Unfortunately for them that usually means an embarrassing playoff exit after a limping finish.

Yes, despite Brees killing every Fantasy owner who had him this past week, I think they will rebound and they are still my pick. laugh all you want. :D:D

Excellent day yesterday, with the Big Ten again getting embarrassed with Michigan going down to another defeat, the 'historic' (translation: have been crap for two decades) Notre Dame going down, and LSU running riot over VT.

Up the SEC!

Pats looked pretty good today whupping the J - E - T - Sucks. For all of the Moss detractors, I saw about zero percent theatrics and a lot of great plays. Not many receivers can run a long route in triple coverage and score a TD. Welker looks to be the next in a long line of annoying white guys who make mid-range catches and gain 8-14 yards every play. Brady was really accurate, looked really good. The Maroney-Morris combo in the running game looked good too. Jets D couldn't do anything about it. Add in the awesome runback from Hobbs (108 yards!) and it was over very early.

On the other side, Pennington had a good game and put together two good drives, but he got shaken up on that ankle injury (looked pretty nasty). They were never in the game though; pretty embarrasing to have the opposing team bring in their third string QB when you're at home, esp between Pats-Jets. Pats D looked decent; obviously without Harrison and Seymour for these first few weeks it will look worse than it is. San Diego will test that next week. But Adalius Thomas looked excellent; good to have Samuel back in the line too.

So glad the season's started.

Pennington's injury was fricking cheered by the Jets fans.

The Giant's defence is pathetic, I really rate Eli though. Poor Rex Grossman. I love him because he's an old UF boy, but damn...

The Bucs attempt to get decent on offence has fallen flat on its face. Gruden has been a joke for years, and Garcia smacked of desperation. When you're run out of Detroit and Cleveland, you're past it.

The Pats looked very very good, as did the Chargers. Moss did make a vaguely obnoxious comment about not having to rehabilitate anything.

The Bills surprised me even though they lost. Hopefully Everett will be ok, he suffered a bad spine injury that required emergency surgery and they won't know if he'll walk for up to 48 hours.

Looking forward to tomorrow's double header. I've not enjoyed a gridiron season this much in a long time.

Eagles need a punt returner.

Desperately. :nervous:

A very good defensive effort wasted by crap ST "play."

On the upnote, McNabb looks pretty much recovered from his injury.

I like Kevin Curtis in the Midnight Green. Good acquisition. Monte Reagor too.
