College Basketball 12/13

Well the schedule is 82 games and each team won't always have the same number of games at each time. There will be off nights. In football, you'd say "Team X has a 4 point lead over Team Y but Team Y has 2 games in hand". Here you would look at the winning percentage.

So if team X is 38-33 and team Y is 36-30 it can be confusing. You just look at Winning Percentage for Team X as .535 and for Team Y as .546 and you know that Team Y is ahead in the standings despite having fewer wins so far.

I'm not really familiar with the game you are using. I assume it is a Be A Pro type thing. If you are regularly passing in your own half and succeeding, that's pretty unrealistic. When you watch games you'll see that the point guard almost always dribbles the ball past the half way line to the top of the three point line (the arc). Then he starts running the offense. Whether that is a designed play or a simple pass or him dribbling past his man, drawing other defenders onto him and then passing it to a open team mate.

Fair enough. Yeah I often do exactly what you said, only I end up scoring qutie a bit instead of passing when the opportunity arises, but a few tiems it's been 'they score, ball handed to me, I throw it immediately to the guy on the by line and he bags a 3 pointer'

I get points lost for 'bad pass selection' and then get points for an assist. It's a bit annoying.

I'll have to try and watch a few games on TV.

Aha, I got a PM from a newbie.

Why is a pass from point guard in his own half to whatever position is standing at the by line considered bad? My team members regularly get 3 from there. I pass it immediately when it's handed to me, get marked down for bad pass, he bags a 3 and I get an assist.

I assume your talking about NBA 2K13 here. They usually give you the bad pass message when you pass it to the center on your team when he is standing by the 3 point line, this is because he doesn't have 3pt range.

It's all about knowing where your teammates are supposed to be. You say you are playing for the Hawks which means you should be passing to the SG (Korver/Williams) and the SF (Stevenson/Morrow I think) when they are located at the 3 pt line. The other 2 positions C & PF are usually located under and around the basket. So you should only really be passing the ball or Horford when he is close to the basket. Josh Smith however is rare in that he can shoot 3pointers even though he is a PF. It might give you the bad pass message if you pass to him, but realistically he can make that shot.

Makes sense.

I just noticed this but you support Buckeye football and Hoosier basketball, goodevil? Hmm...the best of th Big 10. Why do I find that wrong? :p

I was born in Columbus Ohio, but I went to IU. I went back to live in Columbus at one point and picked up OSU basketball again for a bit, but I haven't watched college football for ages.

Anyway, IU football is possibly one of the worst programs in the country over the life of the program.

You bastard! :) You get a pass for going to School at IU.

Indiana is worse than Purdue at football and that says a lot.

IU host UNC tomorrow, should be a very good game. And also congrats to the IU soccer team for beating #1 seed Notre Dame in the tournament, please beat UNC at their place this friday as well!

IU 83-59 UNC

And we had a 32 point lead before we put all the bench players on the floor. That was probably the best I've ever seen IU, or any other college bb team I've followed, play.

Zeller 20pts, 8-13 fg, 8 re's, 4 bl
Oladipo 19 pts, 8-13 fg, 4 re's and one of the best defenders in college bb
Sheehey 19 pts, 8-12 fg, 5 re's and great defense on McAdoo in the 2nd half
Hulls 13 pts, 5-8 fg, 3-5 3's, 7 re's (6'0" guard), 8 assists no TOs, 2 st

21 assists on 33 made shots in the game for IU, to 8 for UNC.

And I'm gonna go ahead and say Christian Watford, our 2nd leading scorer last season, will not play in the NBA.

Mason Plumlee 21 and 17.

Is Zeller even the best player from the state of Indiana?

I haven't watched any of Mason Plumlee, what do you think of him?

I'm really impressed with Zeller because he has assets most big men don't, he reminds me of Tim Duncan at times, not the most imposing physically but with great intangibles. Zeller has excellent passing ability, touch, fantastic speed and endurance that allows him to run the floor like a guard, an exemplary attitude, and fantastic intelligence.

Zeller is also two years younger than Mason. If you look at raw stats you have to give the nod to Mason so far this year.

Averages:
Mason: 35.1 min, 19.9 pts, 11.0 re, 1.7 a, 2.7 to, 1.7 blk, 65.3 fg%
Zeller: 27.4 min, 15.9 pts, 7.7 re, 1.4 a, 1.3 to, 1.6 blk, 63.5 fg%

But if you average Zeller's #'s up to 35.1 min per game you get:
Zeller: 35.1 min, 20.4 pts, 9.9 re, 1.8 a, 1.7 to, 2.0 blk

Which makes it seem very even.

Duke hasn't been playing the Little Sisters of the Poor though. ;)

They are the two front-runners now. I think if Marshall comes back healthy that Mason will be able to play a little more of a free role. He has to avoid foul trouble so he might be a little tentative in the first half of games because we have no backup for him.

Zeller is good though. I'd love to see a matchup between the two teams.

I think the difference between the coaches poll and the AP poll is interesting. I think coaches are more likely to take a long view, consider the strength of the coach and the quality of raw talent. The media seems more reactionary, more concerned with recent results and resumes.

To that extent, I'm not surprised to see Kentucky remain in the top 25 for the coaches but not the AP. I'm also not surprised that IU has 81% of the 1st place votes from the coaches and 69% from the media. I think the coaches are taking the strength of our team and upperclassman leadership more into account and the media is looking more at our somewhat weaker schedule, to date.

Duke's win over Kentucky isn't so impressive anymore, so they can really only brag about their win vs. #7 OSU and #5 Lousiville. IU has beaten #15 Gtown and #20 UNC, which is certainly not as impressive, but we also have 9 games against ranked teams left on our schedule (2 vs #7 OSU, 2 vs. #3 Michigan, 2 vs. #14 Minnesota, 2 vs #19 Mich. St. and 1 vs. #13 Illinois). Duke only has 4 currently ranked teams left (2 vs. #20 UNC and 2 vs. #25 NC State).

Duke may well finish the regular season undefeated considering the weakness of the ACC this season, while IU could lose 2 games in a stacked Big Ten and still be the best team in the country. Though I think at that point we'd lose the #1 ranking, knowing how the pollsters tend to prefer teams with less losses but weaker schedules.

"Kentucky had been ranked in the last 61 polls, 11 of those weeks at No. 1. The run started with the preseason poll of 2009-10, the start of the Calipari Era."

http://news.cincinnati.com/viewart/...r-Calipari?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|p

And it's only the AP poll, the coaches poll has them ranked #19. They are the team with the most points in the AP poll outside of the top 25, making them effectively ranked #26, so they're not far off.

That really is mind boggling.

IU has a big game against Butler (7-2) at the weekend. They're sort of a little brother to our program, we generally root for them as long as they're not playing us. Anyone who loves basketball has to respect what Butler does with decidedly less athletic players than other good teams.

Things are so bad for Texas and UCLA this season that they barely drew 2000 fans to a recent game at Reliant Stadium, which holds in excess of 60000.

App state........where I have heard that before..hmmmmm.....Oh yeah....they fecking beat us in our worst football loss in history. :annoyed::mad:

The refs let Butler foul and shove all game, and we didn't respond by getting physical ourselves. We failed to run at all, we had almost nothing on the break except a few steals.

Made a great comeback and took the game to overtime, then we seemed to think that was all it would take. Instead Butler closed it out with two 3s and a layup.

And we missed 11 free throws in regulation, one of those drops and we win.

Going to watch our first big ten game against the shitty Wildcats on Jan 3rd at Evanston. Any other Caf Michigan fans going?

Ooooooh! Good one.

It is a bit weird our pre-season schedule is so light, it's probably the easiest one we've had in god knows how long, maybe 50-60 years? We were counting on having Kentucky and when they didn't sign we didn't have time to get someone else big in on such short notice, and working around the few dates we had open.

There's talk of a Kansas series to replace Kentucky.

To be honest I've seen almost no basketball outside of Indiana games, a bit of the Duke v OSU game, so I have no idea how we really compare to the other top teams. Duke and OSU took turns looking good and bad in that game, so it was hard to judge.

More like:

How many ranked teams has Indiana beaten?

Georgetown and Butler will be ranked after this, if not already. But I know where you are coming from.

Honestly I don't care about early season rankings. I suspect the reason this schedule is the way is it is that Crean needs to have cupcakes to ease/blend in the new (orginally 5) freshmans and solidify the new 'target on the back' status in the minds of the kids, who arent really used to it after years in the dumps.

I think the schedule will be a few notches more difficult next season.

So many good teams are playing almost no one but fluff teams from the RPI 200s. It's a bit boring, to be honest, I'd like to see a return to having 1/2 to 1/3 of the non-conference games be against schools you've heard of, at least.

The real problem is in the rankings, coaches have realized they'll get more credit for a bunch of cupcake wins than splitting some tough games with decent teams.

On each team's ESPN page they show their ranking on PPG, rebounds per game, assists per game and fg%.

IU ranks 1st in points, 14th in rebounding, 11th in assists and 3rd in fg%. Those are some damned impressive stats, no matter who you play.

Duke, for example, is 17th in points, 165th in rebounds, 25th in assists and 23rd in fg%, which is pretty good really.

Michigan is 19th, 83rd, 41st and 6th respectively. Syracuse is 3rd, 4th, 5th and 32nd, which is damned awesome, though their schedule makes IUs look tough.

First big away match of the Big Ten season, at Iowa who have quietly rung up an 11-2 start. They average 41.6 boards and 16.9 assists, compared to 44.2 boards and 17.6 assists for IU, though we average 12 more points a game.

But Iowa hasn't played anyone ranked, losing to Wichita on a neutral court and away to Virginia Tech. Last time I looked we were only 4 point favorites, I'd be all over that action. If we play our game we can beat them by 10 with an average performance.

Let's just say this about the referees in the IU game: I texted my brother after 5 minutes to tell him that we definitely wouldn't be covering the spread.

A good win -- won there since 2008. We always looked like in control and had a gear or two to step up if required.

So, how do these prices compare to getting a United ticket back when they were hard to get? Ebay have the following prices for the cheapest tickets available to the Indiana big ten home games:

Minnesota $225
Wisconsin $144
Michigan State $285
Penn State $162
Michigan $707
Nebraska $85
Iowa $374
Purdue $313
Ohio State $194
