Cody Gakpo

I don’t need vindication from the CAF  .

Gakpo is a very talented player who is already showing signs of adapting to the pace of the league and its physical demands. He’s been a key fixture in Liverpools uptake in form recently and I think too many people are dismissing him because he came from the Eredivise and then to Liverpool.

It’s a Redcafe double whammy for underrating a player and I’m genuinely worried he’ll become a great player for Liverpool with a proper pre season under his belt.

Mbappe and Gakpo are very different financial outlays. Bit ridiculous to even suggest a comparison.

A lot of the off the ball work Gakpo did is what created space for others to thrive. His run to draw out Dier for example was one such show of his intelligence.
I don't compare the financial outlays. We didn't even have money Gakpo money. If we have spare money under the sofa for a stop gap signing in January like this, we should have money for MBappe type of signing. Make sense?

You just clearly wanted to be vindicated with your two thread bumps about nothing burger performance. Bar West Ham game, there is nothing more than typical Gakpo performance where he does well when they teams play well, and fading when the flow changed. It's not like Liverpool needs him to beat thrash Leeds when even Bournemouth could pull that off. Why didn't you bump the thread for their game against Nottingham Forest?

People on here are just salty we didn't buy him in the winter (as we should have) and trying to justify their opinions at the time (we apparently were loaded with talent on the wings), so they do not look pretty silly.

I'd rather see Gakpo up front instead of Weghorst obviously. But if buying Gakpo meant we couldn't go for our main summer target up front, a stop-gap in Weghorst is a better move (in my opinion).

Gakpo hasn't changed Liverpool's fortunes, and I don't think he would have added much here either. Might well be proven wrong long term, but I just feel he's missing that bit extra that the top players have.

I have said this time and again. This thing with saving money is a Glazer engineered myth. United should not have to save money since the sum was exactly how much the Glazers take in dividends each six months until very recently.

Gakpo would not be a starter for us and neither is he one for Liverpool. He's played so much because Jota and Luiz have been out.

He would have been perfect for rotation for Rashford and his finishing might have bagged us enough goals to keep us in the title race longer than a couple of hours and also in the EL. He's basically our version of Mahrez and Trossard at that price (lower quality obviously) and you need those to challenge in a long season where our amazing manager refuses to give up on any cup

Well in fairness, I think we have only a set budget and have to comply with FFP like every other club so I don't think it's as simple as you have stated.

Our squad is clearly missing top quality in a number of specialist positions (CF and a dictating CM capable of playing through the lines). In my opinion, Gakpo wouldn't have added enough to our squad to warrant any significant outlay and he'd be behind Rashford, Garnacho, Antony and hopefully a top CF if we add one in the summer. That's before you add Sancho and Martial in the mix.

I take your point, it's a valid one. But I haven't seen enough from him in a Liverpool shirt to run missing out on him.

Instrumental again today… eventually while no one wants to acknowledge it yet people are going to have to accept he’s a very good player who we could have signed to bolster our attack.

I’ve been saying this for a while now and I hate that it’s for Liverpool but he’s a quality player.

There are a lot of good forwards in the world. Is he one that we're going to cry about? Not for me.

It doesn’t make any sense as the financial outlay on Mbappe won’t be covered by this sofa money you speak of.

Nothing burger performances? Pfft. I bump it when he shows his quality why would I bump it otherwise? There’s plenty enough negativity in the football forums I’d rather look at the positives in players games where possible.

He’s starting to show he’s adapting to the league and forming a functional attack now consistently. As I said next season I think he’ll show even more with a full preseason.

It’s not that we even should have bought him it’s more that either people don’t understand how he performs his CF role or they are just ignoring that he’s performing well given the context.

Nor should we be crying over this kind of player but a bit of credit where it is due to him.

Why doesn't it make sense? You suggested Gakpo is the type of forward would bolster our attack, when it's clear we didn't have money. In case we have money, why stop at by paying Gakpo? Or Gakpo is a superstar forward that you would buy at all cost, and too bad we missed out?

How many players have good performance on the same day? No other players have positivity? Why bump this Gakpo player only, if not for your investment and need for vindication?

You did no analysis about how he operates as CF. You just bumped the thread when he assisted, goal involved in their attack? He didn't have positive in Nottingham Forest game?

Playing well when the team doing well then fade as opposition took over the control is nothing special. Even Darwin Nunez looked good against Real Madrid for the first 20 minutes in the first leg. They could have got 3 goals just as Spurs. A strong team could get back into the game and punish Liverpool where their "influential" fade. Same thing happened against Spurs here.

People can easily say Jota coming back from injury has been a positive to Liverpool up turn in result. Can you analyze the game and refute that claim?

3 weeks since posting this and he’s now 6 goals and 1 assist in 15 PL games (1065 mins).

More importantly he’s building more attacks now for Liverpool and becoming a key fixture in their attack. Very much first choice.

I think next season could be huge from him.

He's a decent player but no more. Most importantly for us, he's yet another player brought in to replace the aging front three/six that is not as good as they were. Diaz, Nunez and now Gakpo are all well below the level of Mane, Salah and Firmino. Jota is the only one who looks up to it and this season he has been a crock.

How much would Mbappe cost compared to Gakpo? You’re living in a fantasy if you think it’s the same logic. Gakpo may have been out of our reach financially and I’m not being critical of our recruitment by saying he’ll be a very good player for Liverpool.

Why bump? Because it’s a player I know a lot about and I don’t know a lot about all players so I will discuss those that I have an informed opinion on. Gakpo is one of them and a few years ago so was Teun Koopmeiners. I like discussing footballers.

If you’d like me to do a deeper analysis of his role I’m more than happy to?

Jota was incredibly lucky not to be sent off for a high foot. Gakpo has played the most in the forward line bar Salah since signing and since his signing they have steadily improved to now have a very good chance at 5th.

The jury is certainly still out as to whether he can become a great player but he’ll absolutely be good enough for Liverpool as a false 9/No9.

Gakpo at the same age as those mentioned is doing just fine in terms of development.

He's developing better than I thought. Was quite comvinced he wouldn't make it at all at Liverpool, but he's develipwd tremendously in 6 months. And while I care feck all what he does there, it's great for our national team.

If there’s one thing that people on the CAF should listen to me about it’s Dutch footballers.

Teun Koopmeiners I was jokingly called his dad for talking so highly of him and now Gakpo people were saying all sorts.

These are players I’ve followed for a very long time and so I’m not at all surprised by their development. Frustrating that it’s for a rival club but it’s great news for Dutch football to have such a goal and creative threat again.

Most on here knew what you thought was wrong back then and repeatedly called you out on it too. It does have a knock on for other player predictions you may have made, even your own countrymen. :)

I'm so salty we didn't get him, even more so that Liverpool did. Think he will really get going this season. Excellent, multifaceted player.

I still don't think he's anything special. i'm genuinely glad they didn't buy someone better.

A player they didn't need and who I reckon won't start the majority of matches for them this coming season.

He is literally, LitEraLly, the Firmino replacement that everyone on here said we would desperately need. :wenger:

He's like a more athletic Firmino, incredibly intelligent.

The only issue is the fit with Nunez but, for this season at least, looks like a luxury situation where we can pick and choose which kind of attack to go with for certain games. Nunez can bully certain defences while Gakpo comes in when a bit more control is needed, without sacrificing much in the way of goal threat.

The attacking depth is best we've ever had, just desperately need to give Klopp the defensive reinforcements he's asking for.

Not the slightest regret over this, should be nowhere near the leading position in a club that's looking to challenge for the highest honors.

Diaz-Gakpo-Salah or Gakpo-Nunez-Salah should be our front three depending on form and opponent. Jota as supersub.

I have high hopes for Gakpo this season, he already looked a different player by the end of last season compared to when he came to us, so will be interesting to see if he can keep that up or even take a next step forward. He's a more well-rounded player and has better abilities than Nunez I'd say right now, just a pity that his best position imo is left winger rather than central forward.

Núñez is a wider LF now. I don’t see him being a ST for you long term.
Which player out of Nunez, Jota or Diaz gets benched for him to be a starter then, given Salah will play every game?
Diaz Gakpo Salah
Best front 3 IMO

Jota Núñez

What? Is he amazing all of a sudden? “phenomenal” even? Last I heard he was shite?

Of course it’s silly season, where Chelsea and Liverpool have all the best players in the World again

Probably like when Veron became the World’s best midfielder again after that US tour, and then we promptly sold the flop to Chelsea, only to watch him flop again there.

He easily starts for them alongside Salah and Diaz.

He’s fine. Will have some very good games but not overly concerned with him. Far more concerned with Diaz finding form.

Wtf? He's praised like he's Messi by some  he is incredibly average and benefits from Liverpool being a very offensive team

Our 'best' 3 are Diaz, Gakpo, Salah.

Jota is very unlucky to just miss out as he is a goal machine too. Lastly we have Nunez as our Origi second super sub.

It’ll be a rotation of regret between him and Nunez
They’ll be back in the transfer market come January

Why has this thread suddenly started churning out such superlatives? Did he have a good game or something today? Not sure what has changed.

Also not sure why united fans are whining about missing him. We have Garnacho and Rashford who occupy those positions. Even on Rashford's bad days, he would offer more than Gakpo. Weird stuff. Oh and feck off Liverpool.

I'll admit, he's a lot better than I thought he was. Watching him play for PSV last season, I had serious doubts about whether he would improve us. Looking at him at Liverpool, I think he's more intelligent and mature than Rashford, though less explosive. He's also more hard working and explosive than Martial, with a very powerful shot and good delivery. He'll do well.

What's with this thread? Nothing majorly positive until today and suddenly everyone is reacting like an American's "first time reaction" to prime R9.

You realize he plays through the middle for Liverpool right? Same place he would have played for us?

I sure as feck would have preferred watching him over Weghorst last season.

Wut? The entire caf said he was dogshit after his first touch

He still hasnt been that amazing yet for me. And he's also still better on the left.

Do you not feel like a bit of a bell end coming in and just stroking your own phallus in post form?
