Television Cobra Kai

Think I'm on episode 4, but it's clear they have a lot of history and rivalry even though I've not seen the movies.
Nice, I thought they had done well but I'm coming into it knowing the history.

Binged season 1 and will move on to 2 after a break watching The Boys.

I’m absolutely loving it! The tone is spot on with the movies which, yes, is quite cheesy but it just wouldn’t fit otherwise. I love the 80’s music, the nonsense Johnny spouts, the somewhat crappy karate, the references and flashbacks and the fact that you’re never really sure whether all of the actors are good but hamming it up OR they are crap and have purposely been chosen for that reason haha.

Also Daniel’s wife is super hot.

Tory is great at being a bitch. And a looker
But yeah Carmen is great

I love Johnny trying to work with new technology, and his confusion and / or disgust

Binged it the last 3 days, I feel dirty for liking it.. cheesy as fcuk, but I did enjoy it.

Just watched the bit where Larusso throws his first kick the roundhouse in the showroom, it's so incredibly painful to watch back (though obviously not as painful as it was for him to do! )

I've decided I love this.

It was so cheesy but I loved it.

Finished the 2nd series now and is really enjoyable. Like some have said it is a bit on the cheesy side of things but then I always thought karate kid was.

I remember seeing a YouTube video a few years ago about how Daniel was really the bad guy in the whole thing and it does seem like the show likes to play with that a bit. The moaning about the illegal kick.

I enjoyed the refrence to this in How I Met Your Mother - starring both Zabka and Macchio!

And of course it runs in the family:

It’s brilliant. Watched the two series in about 5 days.

When is season 3?

I’m not sure as a middle aged man I’m meant to be watching it, or who it’s really aimed at - but it’s enjoyable.

Music, terrible jokes, bad acting, bad fighting. It’s just pure joy, and got all the right ingredients.

It tickles me, that Daniel and Jonny lives in the same town for 30 years and seemingly never bumped into each other, then every episode since they randomly bump into each other at a restaurant or the hospital or wherever.

So binged this over the last few days. I think this is the most I've enjoyed a show since Ozark.

It's just the right level of silly, fun, nostalgia whilst also having charm and feels like the makers were fans of the movies.

It genuinely made me laugh out loud many times over.

I love the main guy (Johnny). Such a smart move to focus on him and his revisionist history is a very clever angle. He is so easy to root for. Especially as his life mirrors most of ours... Some ups followed by massive downs.

I like Daniels dynamic with his family. Although Sam is a hypocritical bitch. But I'm so surprised with the wife. Normally the wife characters are annoying in many of these shows but she is very logical. I can't imagine how my wife would react if I started ignoring my job and started training for a Tekken tournament to take me back to my youth  She's also smoking hot.

The only thing that bugged me for some reason was Hawk being beaten up by Dimitri. I know the show isn't meant to be exactly realistic but that was too far stupid. Hawk is meant to be solid and training for long time, Dimitri is a nerd that should have got smashed in.

I hate him  [\spoiler]

you could just look it as Hawk didn’t expect him to actually do anything and took him for granted and was caught. Personal experience sparring it’s always the novices that catch you with weird stuff because they just do things that don’t make sense.

I think Hawk generally is my favourite character in the show. Every time I see him I just burst out laughing.

How old is “middle aged”? If you’re mid 40s, you were perfect audience for the age of the original films so in theory you’re exactly the demographic that should love this having grown up with the films.

I like that all the main characters are flawed in some way and no one ever manages to be completely in the right even though they all think they are.
Tbh they all become really good at karate very quickly, Daniel did in the original as well I think. I think the idea was good behind the scene as it looked like Dimitri was just going to get beat on forever. Personally preferred the mall fight scene, the whole bizarre school one and the Miguel fall was just
I think sometimes the time line jumps a good bit as well, so it's not 100% clear how far along they are in training.

Hawk is well written and acted, I say that because I really dislike the guy

Didnt the whole of season 2 occur over the course of the school summer holidays?

Aye yeah, is that 6 weeks like in the UK? Probably falls more under the natural karate ability present in the valley residents then.

The end of season one sucked, the last two eps with Miguel and the gang being all angsty was really rushed and terrible writing.

The start of season 2 has got back to being good, but it's now getting to romcom territory. Miguel, Robbie and Sam are bad characters but at least we still have Johnnie and Daniel to counteract. Hawk is an absolutely atrocious character though and that new girl is so cookie cutter I don't think I'm going to like where this goes.

It does feel like I should be following it up with Spy Kids or something at times. But yeah, it’s just easy watching, unpretentious, enjoyable silliness.

You’re overthinking it man

You’re overthinking it man

Overthinking this show!?

You know, just because it's brilliant cheesy nostalgia porn, doesn't mean they can't miss the mark at times. Pointing out the things that don't work isn't overthinking, it's being honest that I found myself going from binging the first season in a day, to starting to not be so eager to watch the next episode the day after.

The last 2 eps of season one lost the charm, the start of season 2 found it again. Some of the teen characters are just bad, and not in a 80's cheese kind of way, more in a trying too hard to be 80's cheese kind of way.

If I were thinking too hard, I could point out 100's of terrible things...for example like Macchio not bothering to spend even a single hour training to do this

Way too much thinking in this post

What platform is it on?

I went straight to this after watching The Fall (quite a grim crime drama) and Conra Kai was a very welcome day of sunshine after that.
How did you find the The Fall? Worth the binge? Thinking of starting the series

They stepped up the fighting in s2. The scene in the hallway where Hawk clotheslines someone

I was so relieved when I learnt the actress that plays Sam is 24.
