Chido Obi

I can't see a player's confidence getting crushed completely if he doesn't do well in a 15 minute cameo on Friday. If it does, then he doesn't have the minerals.
I'm sure Amorim will make it clear there are no expectations and anything he does well will be a positive. Just go out and play.
He looks physically ready, from what I read he's been training with the 1st team, so why not give him a go? Amorim started with Mainoo up front last game, which tells you all you need to know about how much he currently rates the other options. I think he makes the bench on Friday and hopefully he gets a few minutes.

Yeah there is zero expectation on him, anything he could offer would be a bonus. My gut feeling is that IF he had been in consideration it would have probably broke. I fully expect him to play for U21's instead.

We've given plenty of young players minutes in the past and it worked out well enough. Ferguson did it plenty too so I don't get the panic from posters to giving him minutes.

Using him for 15 mins when we need an impact is a win win.

The big difference between SAF and now is the situation we’re in. Fergie very rarely did it when we were struggling.

I dread to think what would happen to the lads confidence if he made a first team appearance and failed (because he will, barely played for the U21s he isn’t ready yet, like most things we need more patience)
Yeah, but the best players play very little U21s football. Rashford, Greenwood, Garnacho and Mainoo have like less than 30 combined starts in the U21s. I don't think we should start him, but in the last 10 minutes, if we are chasing a game, we can use him as a last throw of the dice. That will probably be better for his confidence.

You mean like Barca played Ansu Fati and ruined him?

I dont know if I want any young talent brought into this total mess we currently have

As for "play him last 20 minutes" - unless we are winning 3-0 against Leicester by 70th (very unlikely) why do you think it is a good idea to put the pressure of turning a game around or seeing slim win through, on the shoulders of a 17yo?
Because we have two shit strikers and he needs time to see if he can step up that’s why I said try last 20 mins whether winning or losing. 10 mins not long enough to show anything. Other players have played at 17, Rooney was even 16 when he was tested.

Yeah completely agree

He always used the cup competitions to blood them in though and give the first 11 a rest where possible. It should be normal to give youngsters filler minutes, where they can get vital opportunities too.

I always think people get too worried about “ruining a players confidence” or some shite when they are teenagers/just breaking through.

Any player who’s going to be something some day wouldn’t have their confidence ruined by not scoring in a shit team when expectations are already on the floor. It’s not like you’re throwing him in to face Liverpool at Anfield in a must win prem game or something. Getting an FA cup run out or start has very little downside (he isn’t good and goes back to mostly reserves football) with the slight chance of upside being that he plays very well and acclimates quickly helping the squad vitally.

Just having him in the travelling squad will be good for his development. He doesn't have to get minutes.

For one Rooney started playing at Everton, not at United. Pressures are completely different. Later, at United, Rooney walked into a team that was full of stars and winning everything and anything. You are not comparing current crap team to that, are you? Also Rooney was a generational talent, an exception in every way and by no means a norm

I hear you that sometimes managers have no choice and they have to choose between bad and worse, so maybe Amorim will also be forced to throw Chido into games, too early. I understand, I hear you, but it is still bad for Chido and may eventually ruin him

I genuinely don't think it would

He's barely 17. Go back to how you were at 17 and think about how emotionally up & down you were? Besides stikers of all players are confidence players. If his confidence is dented, it could take a while to rebuild. HIs upper body needs filling out if he has to handle proper PL, adult players.

At best, we put him in in the final 10mins, with the clear instruction to keep things simple—to harass/press the defenders is his primary objective.

Oh yeah I'm only talking about a cameo off bench

Why is there so much pressure to play him? This season is done anyway. We're not getting anywhere near top 4, top 8 can actually be a hinderance, and we're not getting relegated. We'll finish around about where we are right now. It is what it is and will not change if we play this lad and potentially ruin him.

If you're really going to give him game time, give him a few minutes in a game that we're winning by a safe margin and let him get the experience. There aren't many games like that though, so we're better off waiting till preseason in my view. Let the players who have got us into this mess deal with it and face up to the negativity, for some of them it will be their last chance at making it here.

Poor kid'll never get game time if you do that.

Our fans have so little patience with players these days - if he doesnt hit the ground running, they will chew him alive. It may be better to actually protect him for now

This kid is the third choice striker and yes, he is really too young to play.

But at some point, he may have to play just due to options.

I'm loathe to do it but it may actually be sensible to give minutes to him this weekend just so we can see what he can do if he does need to play.

At some point, he may have to play. It's not like in the past when SAF would toss an opportunity to players like Welbeck and Rossi when there was a quartet of experienced strikers ahead of them.

Giving him 10 minutes or so against Leicester is actually sensible in the context of our reduced options. He may or may not be ready, but at least we will be aware of what he can do in terms of just doing a job.

Yeah my thoughts exactly

He looks nowhere ready to step into the first team and contribute. Stop expecting him to be our savior. I would surprised if he gets more than a few useless minutes this season. He may get a few minutes so that the manager can out it on his resume that he gave xx player his debut.

The thing that is telling, is there aren't many people clamouring for him to start because they think he is ready (which we've seen happen in recent years with some of our academy graduates). It's the "can he be any worse" crowd that are making the most noise. The reason is because we broke the shiny toy we got two summers ago, and we broke the shiny toy we got last summer... now we are looking around for a new shiny toy to break.

The first team isn't set-up for success. In recent years it's felt like we've been 1 or 2 players away, so someone like Mainoo, Garnacho or the other guy, coming in and offering us something, felt like it could be impactful. Right now I feel like we need more than a top-level striker to fix our problems, it would certainly help, but there's so much more that needs fixing. We are trying to add the cherry on top of the cake before we've even baked it.

The biggest thing for me however, is even if he is ready right now (which I don't think he fully is - as someone who has watched every televised minute he has played for us), he'll still be ready during next pre-season. I've heard of and seen 17 year olds being played too early. Never heard of one being played too late.

There's a reason we blood young players during pre-season. It's a relatively low pressure and away from the spotlight. It also gives them a chance to train with first team players and feel like part of the group, build up some form of chemistry. I'm not interested in potentially hurting any players development to alleviate some fans boredom.

I also don't understand those who say that playing him too soon "can't hurt". We have seen so many examples, in our current playing squad of how seasoned professionals performance can wildly fluctuate based on confidence and other off-field issues. I think a poor experience in the first team could absolutely set him back a little. There's also a large group of fans from North London (and every fan who is old enough to remember the Fergie era), who would love nothing more to see this kid fall flat on his face. And will be there with the horrific abuse that we seen last September if he does.

If management (the people who work with him day in, day out) think he is ready tomorrow then that's excellent. Otherwise let him be.

Your post is spot on, any kids brought into the current 1st has to be clearly ready, i don't think he is atm.

I think it was Bondby? We played them recently and his brother is still there.
He only has two brothers, the twins that played for Copenhagen. One now plays for Frankfurt and the other is at Schalke.

Google exists, pal

He was released from Brondby age 16 you don't need to be sarcastic.

However it is absolutely irrelevant as we can name 100s of players who didn't impress at a young age and then suddenly did...
