Chido Obi

Wasn’t Rashford 17 when he broke into the first team? If your good enough then your old enough I suppose. Worth a shot considering our other attacking options are useless. We need excitement upfront again.
@Rasmus_9 : But is Obi emotionally ready for the spotlight?

@DJ_21 : Rashford was 17 (actually 18), and it didn’t do him any harm, did it?

@Grande : Whaaaaaaaaa?

Eh, what?! Basically everyone say that Grealish as a player with bad attitude and wrong mentality.

And Lingard, according to himself, had a drinking problem. If you dont understand that you have the wrong mentality as a footballer when you end up with a drinking problem you are truly lost.

Casual, tribal fans all point out Grealish’s issues. But within the game, by former players, pundits and press - he is treated very differently.

This is the first I’ve heard if Lingard’s drinking problem, and not saying it is not the truth as I don’t know, but I do know that there wasn’t really a particular conversation around a battle with alcohol for him, and any assertions that he had an attitude problem had nothing to do with any battle with drink.

Yes, because;

A) Man City is less interesting
B) Man City kept winning even when Pep refused to play him due to his lack of effort

There is probably a lot of hate towards players like Lingard just out of envy. We can agree on that. But Lingard talked about his drinking problem himself, and has used it as an excuse.

That's a bit harsh, he talked about having a night cap every night at the end of his time with United in an interview with Stephen Bartlett. His mother was admitted to hospital in 2019 with depression, Jesse said before that she didn't get out of bed at all and he was for his carer for his 11 year old sister and 15 year old brother, while struggling himself with huge amounts of abuse on social media and was probably also suffering with depression. He left at the end of the 21-22 season, he started drinking daily in 2020. The way he talked about it he wasn't out on the lash every night or getting pissed on a daily basis, but said he was drinking before bed "to help take the pain away"

It’s one thing to not constantly have a pop at Grealish, but I do find that the opposite tends to happen. Not only are they not calling out his apparent attitude problems, (also evidentially linked to drinking issues) but they do the opposite. He’s still hailed, celebrated and championed to the hills, ‘should be in the England setup’ etc. He’s one of the worst transfers in PL history and also of questionable attitude, and my issue is not that he is not mentioned at all (due to difference in profile/success between City and United), but when he IS mentioned, it is never negatively.

Lingard has been labelled for a long time, and if you said he presented his drinking problem as an ‘excuse’, then I can only imagine he used it long after people labelled him and grouped him in the ‘Lingard and Pogba’ group, because he didn’t need an ‘excuse’ until things got really bad for him before he left United. Before then, he was in the United and England team, and seen as a clown rather than a model, hardworking pro. He absolutely hasn’t earned any narrative around him because he’s supposed to be a drunk.

Based on the people I know from different sports I was suprised he had even touched alcohol, and knew that it could be a «source of comfort». I remember Klopp once stating that very few of his players drank alcohol.

Exactly. Any revelation of drinking was nit the source of his ‘Lingard and Pogba’ categorisation, especially as Pogba has never been seen in a nightclub and doesn’t drink. It’s because he dances and posts funny videos on social media, let’s not BS here. All of a sudden he’s now a player with an ‘attitude problem and bad mentality.’

Plenty of people have been labeled clowns at Man Utd the past decade. Not many used alcohol as an excuse.

Guess he gave quite a few right then.

I’ve been keeping tabs on him since he’s joined us and I’ve been impressed.

He’s tall and strong. Seems to love making a lovely through ball for teammates and then following up on the action.

I see a bright future for him if he continues this trajectory. I honestly feel giving him a go with the first team wouldn’t be a bad thing - it certainly can’t be worse than what we have up front at the moment.

It's a shame Chido Obi and Wan-Bissaka couldn't play in the same team, cuz we'd be on our way towards a Star Wars starting XI.

It would be at least fun while losing—rather than the Portuguese contigent, then Ajax/Eredivisie theme. The matchday thread would be joyous for a change with the unlimited Starwar punns and references.

Some good signs but needs to continue working on his finishing.

I think once we hit the magic 40 points for safety and we go far in the Europa, you may see him in PL game if Ruben decides to focus on Europa league.

This sort of thinking still a thing then? Was hoping not to see any more of this.

Its not really about relegation, its more about getting enough of a gap. We are highly unlikely to get into the CL via league position this season, so our only way in is winning the EL.

If it gets to it, we will have to concentrate on that over the PL.

We definitely have enough of a gap already. We were never in any danger. Perhaps we will prioritise the Europa League but we'll also want to keep the momentum going, so putting in good performances and winning games in the league will be necessary too.

Yeah I get that, but again, I didn't say we need to prioritize the EL now. I am talking if we reach quarter / semi stages.

What we generally see from teams that start the season well, they have built momentum from the previous season. So for instance from Feb - May we start playing good footy and results, there is more a chance of that carrying over to next season.

Now, if we have 5/6 games left and he wants to experiment with Chido, I would welcome it.

I'm certainly not against Chido Obi getting a chance. One of Højlund/Zirkzee could be leaving in the summer, so would be good to see Obi. He's one of the youngsters I'd be interested in seeing on tour and assessing what the next step is for him.

Yeah, the reason I want to see him for a few games at the end of the season, most likely the PL we wont have anything to play for, it gives Amorim an early idea of the likelyhood of him adapting to seniors.

Then when pre season comes around, he probably will get a chance but Amorim will already have an idea if he is ready or not, if he is then we may not get a ST, if he isn't he will push for a senior ST like Gyokeres.

We really need to be going for a striker even if he dose look ready, he will be 18 and should not be our main striker going into next season, however talented he may be. Even Rooney had Rudd when he first joined.

Whilst I agree we need to go for a striker, we need to sell them. We cannot go into the next season with Zirkzee, Hojlund and another ST with CHido as 4th choice.

Both Hojlund and Zirkzee have till the end of the season to change my mind, I think they both need to be sold.

Yes wouldn’t be against that, Zirkzee would be my first choice to be sold, dosen’t have the urgency for the league or the technical skill to make up for it.

Agreed, fans got giddy over a few cameos and touches he had but he gives the ball away just as much as Hojlund.

He is a bit lazy off the ball, which is why I dont think he will make it long term for us, might as well cut our losses now.

It really frustrates me that players lack urgency, its the basic requirement these days when most managers play a high intensity system.

I’m liking that he is surprising people, myself included, with his performances. Tall, rangy and creates space for chances well. Like that he wants goals too.

Yeah only one way to find out how he fares when coming up against senior players

Genuinely don't see how he could be less threatening than Hoj or Zhirkzee and its not as if he would be left exposed from a defensive standpoint as a rookie defender or midfielder might be. Honestly don't understand the reluctance to try something new from some people here.

The other thing is that our academy stars have been among the brightest aspects of the last two years. Garnacho, Kobbie and now Collyer have all handled the transition to senior football without looking overwhelmed or out of their depth which proves to me that our academy standard is so good right now that the best in it can cope.

Yeah sink or swim as I see it

Just those 2:20, since I saw others respond to it. I have seen more from him though, but I tend to judge a youngster on his most recent play.

You judge a player based on the most recent clips you have seen?

Christ I've heard some shit on this forum but that is..

Okay, just trying to understand. So if the next time he plays against adults he dominates, do you then change your mind?

Of course, why wouldn't I? I have been very critical of maguire in the past, but I have said hes done a good job in more recent seasons.
