Chido Obi

The level Hojlund has fallen is someone here trying to debate whether he offered more than recently turned 17 year old making his second profession appearance.

In 3 and a half times as long on the pitch...

He won duels, he won headers. Maybe outshining you're boy is a bit strong but the fact we're even having this debate speaks volumes about how far Rasmus has regressed.
He won duels

Might want to look up my posts about Hojlund. Youl find he's not my boy.

I saw a 17yr old kids shitting himself out there. Huge step from playing at the corner park with friends to a amped up Premier Leagues stadium full of rowdy scousers. And I don't say that in a negative way. He didn't look bad. He made a good run that, surprise surprise, Garnacho ignored. Certainly didn't look any worse than Zirkzee and Rasmus. Yes probably too young to be bringing up to the first team, but then again, why not, he's been running the pitch in the last two season with Arse and here at Utd. At the very least, give him some experience, who knows maybe he comes good quickly.

A mate of mine i grew up with ended up playing premier league football. When he made his debut in professional football at 17 in the championship, he said that jump up from youth level (top level youth) to the championship was unreal. Said it felt like 10 minutes at that level tired you more than 90 mins at youth level, and obviously time on the ball was non existent in comparison.

I think sometimes we are desperate for a young player to shine instantly as fans, but I liked the look of him today. Very raw, but would love ten minutes here and there to see how he comes on.

People are absolutely dying to pile on hype on this kid and wrote off the old news kid in hojlund.

They would write off obi before end of season if he played every game.

Mad that nobody sees the reality that haaland would struggle to score in this team given the lack of build up and chances created.

Haaland might not be involved all that much but he would still score regularly. He has vastly better movement than Hojlund and is stronger and quicker to boot. Hojlund needs to up his game massively if he's to remain here. Manchester United can't have a striker as uninvolved (/poor in possession) as he is who barely even gets shots off, never mind scores. The whole team is guilty of it not just him, but he's the main centre forward for Man United and he needs to have some arrogance, self-belief, and selfishness if he's to become of the level required.

Young players jump to the first team every year in every team in the premier league, why is it some sort of mythical experience people are describing.

The kid's 17 and nowhere near ready for Premier League football. It kind of unbelievable we're in the position where playing him doesn't seem that ridiculous.

Obi is 17, and the post you quoted was about a different player making the step up at 17 in the championship and commenting on the huge difference.

Players making that step up from youth levels to the PL first team at 17 doesn't happen as often as your post implies. Yes, academy products progress to PL first teams every year - but they're not often as young and inexperienced as Obi. They're usually at least a year or two older, often with some loan experience in senior football.

It's rare to see someone as young and inexperienced as Obi step up so soon. And it's more to do with the dire state of our attacking options, rather than a nailed on confidence that Obi is an exceptional talent ready for the PL at 17 and 3 months. He's an exciting talent with good potential, but there's no way he'd be being promoted this early if we weren't in such a desperate position regarding our attacking options.

Hopefully this puts paid to the nonsense I’ve been reading recently about chucking him in for the rest of the season. He’s not ready and it would be detrimental to his development. Short sub appearances are ok, but that’s all

Yup, you need Rooney/Ronaldo talent/physique to play for us at 18.

there is no chance in my mind. haaland doesn't create chances himself. this team doesn't create any chances.

Ronaldo had greatest of all time potential and he was still slowly played into the team. Rooney was straight in. Different players need different things. It seems like Rasmus badly needs rotating and someone else to take the pressure off him but at a club of our size it shouldn't be a 22 year old and a 17 year old. It's suicide

They do for people who shoot instead of pissing about. Not saying they're particularly good chances but Haaland doesn't need amazing chances to get goals because he's an actual striker.

Happy to see him get minutes, but he really doesn’t seem ready for the PL yet though. Physically still a bit from it.

Keep him around the first team, let him get cameos as well as the u21/u18 now and then, and then perhaps he could leap into a genuine backup-option for next season.

I’m all for introducing the younglings into the squad, I find it more exciting than any new signing.

But he isn’t ready for this yet. He looked his age today.

The harsh truth is Rasmus needs a loan with a good championship side or somewhere in Holland where he can develop his confidence and score 25+ goals.

He's not going to get it because we have no other options and vastly overpaid for him, but if he'd come out the academy that'd be where he was at. Obi, is a million miles away from being ready for first team football. That he plays is a sign of desperation.

Was it not reported at the time that he was signed as a third choice striker for the first team? I thought the main reason he signed for us was because of the pathway. There must have been some reasonable expectation as third choice striker that he would be getting minutes once he was up to full fitness.

It is comical that some people are defending Hojlund's performance by comparing it to chido obi. The stats for the game tell a clear story:

HojlundChido
MInutes7020
Touches1210
Accurate passes7/74/6
Shots00
Ground duels won00
Aerial duels won01
Possession lost35

The stats for Hojlund look almost comical compared to Chido. Hojlund touches a ball once every 7 minutes while for Chido it is once every 2 minutes. Considering that neither managed to get a shot off, at least Chido is involved more than Hojlund and can win some percentage of headers.

It is baffling how someone can defend Hojlund's performance. 0 duels won, 0 shots attempted, 12 touches in 70 minutes of football.
