Chido Obi Martin

He an interesting one, looks like Carlton Palmer playing up top. Still got lots of filling out to do my view so let him do that in the academy. He must be absolutely huge, Tyler Fletcher maybe 6’2” and he towers him. Was expecting them goals to be him physically bullying with pace and power on the last man, but he’s actually behind the play for all 3. Be shocked if he got around first team yet other than a token gesture to market the academy. In a couple of years when he’s developed physically who knows

He’s too good for u18s and I don’t expect to see him there too much.

Perhaps we just wanted to ease him in. Get him a goal (or three) keep his confidence up and then unleash him on u21s

There’s a couple more in that team yday that look like they might follow quickly to u21s

As for Hojlund, he struggled too and has barely pulled much at first team level. United need regular goal scorers, not patchy fancy flicks. If the first team forwards aren't doing it then we need to look further down.
Most u-18 top talents never become top players and many top players were not top talents as teenagers. Also, the bolded quote is just wrong.

Oh how I love to see all of these posts preaching calm. Not. You don't need to say that he's the reincarnation of Pele, nor do you need to undersell what Obi-Martin is achieving by stating that 'all his goals are tap-ins' or 'he's a massive guy' or that the level of the under 18's is 'garbage' or any other negative you can possibly think of in the name of 'calm'.

Just be balanced about things. It's ok to be excited, to have hope and to enjoy the ride.

No one has suggested he is guaranteed first team level so the over compensation to try to dampen my point is laughable. Obi Martin clearly has the instinct for goals, something that cannot be coached and as he develops, we will see how he steps up.

The key point is that despite spending billions, Manchester United currently has a -2 goal difference. Manchester United currently has no outstanding center forwards or attackers. The numbers back that up. Rallying around and trying to protect certain players won't change that fact.

He trained with Arsenal's first team a number of times last season, so he clearly has huge potential.

What’s this “instinct for goals” you’re talking about that apparently cannot be trained? Can you be more specific? Is it his movement? Technical ability/motor skills when shooting? Calmness? ‘Cause all of those can obviously be trained.

Too often people just for whatever reason cannot break it down and just lump it in “instinct” or whatever.

As said a few times already. Looks too strong for the under 18's

In fairness - he took those goals really well, but it takes a bit more than a hat-trick against a mediocre Forest-team to get promoted to the U21s. He will be promoted fairly quickly - but it doesn't hurt him to play a few matches to find his feet before promoting him

True. But maybe not that much more than a hat trick in 14 mins and four goal involvements in 45 mins before he was taken off. Most importantly though, I’m not sure it will be good for his development to have him play to much at that level. He needs to be challenged at a level where his physics isn’t that much of a pushover advantage, so he learns how to utilize and develop his other strengths more.

I'd give him 20 minutes against Leicester. Can't do any worse than the usual lot.

Good thing he has 32 goals and 3 assists in 18 matches then

Don't really get our fans obsession with players proving themselves in u21s. The best players play most of their youth football at u18s and very little at u21s before making the 1st team. If you play a 1+ season in the u21s without a 1st team debut it is likely not going to happen for you at United.

Mainoo, Garnacho, Greenwood, Rashford all played very little for the u21s. You do not need to 'prove yourself' in the U21s. U18s is the better indicator.

He seems to have an eye for goals, unquestionably seeing his stats, but so does Biancheri. The future indeed looks bright but let's not pile too much pressure on his shoulders. I would hope the coaching staff know what they're doing and, without doubt, they have a plan for the kid. I haven't been quite as excited about the 16-21 age group since the 90's. ( if I remember rightly it was Phil Neville who was attracting all the attention then!) I just hope that yhe next manager believes and trusts in our Youth.

I think if these attributes were as easily trainable as you say, you'd see far more of the hard-working type of players show significant goal scoring improvements between their academy years and their peaks which isn't the usual trend. I suspect its because shooting skill and penalty box decision making are largely innate traits that the lucky few have naturally and can then develop to a really high level.

How did he do yesterday?

He didn’t have many touches, we were sloppy in possession (in the first half). So it’s a difficult one to judge. I’m sure he’ll gradually get more minutes per game, perhaps starting on Saturday.

Apparently both Williams and Biancheri were better:

Chido Obi-Martin – 6 – Scuffed his shot on the one real chance he had. Showed some decent hold up play and smart quick lay-offs when he received the ball but just didn’t receive enough service.

Sounds like he will flourish with service

United weren't good that game, held possession more in their own half due to PSV's press, most attacks were through quick breaks. He did ok with his back to goal but worse than Biancheri's who was much more involved and generally better at all round play. He could have scored 1 goal, but scuffed his shot and had another chance but Moorhouse under hit the final pass, so he struggled to make good contact.

But this is only his second 45 mins after joining the club, still a way to go before drawing any conclusion between him, Biancheri and Wheatley.

Didn't score today (2 assists) and people will talk about his reaction to Ibragimov but he's shone a bit more of his game in 30 minutes today. Did well dribbling through midfield and defense on two occasions

Impressive cameos from him so far. He's certainly making an impact and showing what he's capable of. Lusale, in contrast, has been pretty quiet in his appearances so far. But early days for both.

He did forgive Ibragimov about two minutes later though. So I think that's pretty much normal for a hungry striker.
