Chess World Championship: Anand vs. Carlsen

Another tense game... Carlsen will close this I think, Anand not converting yesterday's advantage to win might turn out to be the turning point here.

Why did Carlsen move the pawn to A5 instead of A6?

Why did Carlsen move the pawn to A5 instead of A6?

I can give you the full variations, but the main 2 points behind this move are:

1- In some lines white will play Rxc7+, now this check will be much more dangerous if the black king doesn't have an escape square on a6. With the pawn on a7 this could run eventually in some lines to the fatal Ra1+, and if the pawn is on a6 then the black king won't have an escape square. With the pawn on a5 the king is covered.

2- The other point is black wants to start pushing his pawns on the queen side (to free his pieces, and develop some dangerous counter attack), and so a5 followed by a4 was the plan, which Anand had to stop immediately with Rc4.

(a6 would be met by Rdc1)

Guessed the first. Second was insightful, thanks.

Yes. But actually the check before that was also a mistake..
Why was Rf8 a mistake?

f6, f7 were not possible due to the pawn and the knight.

f5 would've resulted in Anand moving a knight to d6 and sacrificing it to the pawn at c7, then follow up with another check with the other knight and take out the rook, no?

And he couldn't have kept the rook on the same row..

He should have played g5. Pawn is indirectly defended (Nxg5 => Rf5 winning eventually one of the two knights)..

Having said that it looks like Anand has played an inferior move again.. Carlsen with a small advantage again now. This game is very unpredictable, but I think only Carlsen can win it.

Anand is bably going to survive this! :D

Yes, but Carlsen is now desperately trying to continue playing, and I have seen him grind out wins from positions like these.. Anand still has some fighting to do.

wtf? why did he play Ra8+. I'm worried now!

I don't know! I was shocked he played that.. Now his other rook can't go up to support the e pawn, or provide counter-play..

And not only that, he wasted about 30 minutes on that move!

Now it is getting worrying for Anand..

ffs.

e7.. Why, why, why on Earth would you want the black king to be on b7?!

He also lost the chance to give a free check with the rook on h8.

Yes. The first few minutes he was so nervous he could barely talk.

Carlsen on the other hand seemed to handle it a bit better considering he let the game slip away from him.

He was probably relieved more than anything. To miss the win yesterday, and then lose today would be crushing!

Indeed.

I think it was also because of the last minute check and Re6 try by Carlsen, when Anand had only a minute and a half to think about it, which meant the ending of the game was pretty tense, and he didn't have much time to settle down after that before the press conference.

Who is in better position? Any links for text commentary? Video link won't open in my office.
