Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

Why is Chelsea more attractive to a young, world class player than Manchester United? Apart from maybe being in London I don't quite understand what is it that they can offer that we cannot if we assume we match the wages they are offering. Yes, one year out of the CL is a fact but if you only look at THIS year then that could be a difference. However, I am sure most players will look beyond just the next season.

Chelsea is in CL. We are not. Chelsea could be title favorites after signing a striker (Diego Costa), other signings arriving too (Filipe, Zouma, Fabregas) and Mourinho's second season is usually strong. We were 7th and need to spend a good amount of money to get back to Top4, no signings yet and most of our rumoured signings are not likely to get, most players could think after last summer and rumours at the moment that we are just useless on the transfer market. van Gaal is a great manager, but Mourinho is still more attactive for a player than him. Chelsea were in CL semifinals this year and were the best English team the last years in Europe, with Mourinho and the rumoured signings CL title is possible for sure. We were pretty shit in Europe the last 2,3 seasons, it's not even that sure that we will be back in CL next time, some positions in our squad are just a big mess, unbelievable for a team like Manchester United.
London > Manchester and Chelsea has usually more money too, but that's the least issue right now.

So atm we can only talk about our history and the hope that we will be back as fast as possible to win titles again, but otherwise Chelsea looks more attractive atm.

Chelsea are garbage, always have been, always will be...top that

Purely for financial reasons! nothing else.

Doesn't matter whether they are garbage and what their source of funding is, the fact is they offer a better chance of winning than us right now, have Champions League football, can offer as much as us if not more in terms of money and are based in London. This is what matters the most to a 20 something footballer, more so than what the club has won in the past and how they are getting their money. Whatever be their stature in world football compared to us, in terms of attracting players they are in a much better position than us at the moment.

Essien, Mikel, Ballack, Robben, Hazard...they've all gone to Chelsea ahead of United over the past 10 years.

Some United fans need to wake up a smell the coffee. We're a huge club, but we're not on this pedestal that some seem to think we are. We're not the biggest club in the world, and we very rarely attract the best players in the world.

This idea that Mourinho is attractive to play for.....not for any creative types....Ask Mata...Ask Oscar...Ronaldo....and to be fair a whole host of players.....I think you'll find whomever goes to chelsea goes regardless of manager....its just the type of men they are....

Exactly. Chelsea almost always get the player when both of us want them, and have been getting them ever since Abramovich arrived.

My apologies, I thought you wanted a rational discussion.
If not, yeah, they're shit, go us!

Purely for financial reasons! nothing else.

Yeah, screw them and their money.
We've never been dominant financially, it's just not fair.

So atm we can only talk about our history and the hope that we will be back as fast as possible to win titles again

So this is how it feels like... We Go Again?

It's never been the clubs policy to go out and buy ready made stars. That doesn't mean that we couldn't attract them.

Whilst that is true, there is no reason we can't - money is often the major factor. Some player may prefer to live in London, others may not be as fussed.

No we're not. We are the biggest and most successful club in England though, but unlike the likes of Bayern, Barca, Madrid and Juventus, we simply don't have the privilege of being the richest. Take away City and Chelsea's owners and we'd hardly be challenged.

That's true for some players, but for many I don't think it's a big problem. Fabregas is 27 now, it could be his last big move. If he just want to win titles the next years, Mourinho is a good choice. And if you look at the next 3,4 years, then Chelsea is a sure bet to do fine imo. I don't have a doubt that we will be back and be the best team in england, but if you ask me now, which team is more likely to win the PL or the CL in the next 2-4 seasons, Chelsea or United? Then it's Chelsea and that's probably how Cesc look at it.

Roll on Luke Shaw choosing us....
Oh, the irony.

Why will Shaw come here? It's not just "because we're United" like you seem to think. It's because we're willing to pay FAR more than anyone else is.

No we're not. We are the biggest and most successful club in England though, but unlike the likes of Bayern, Barca, Madrid and Juventus, we simply don't have the honor of being the richest. Take away City and Chelsea's owners and we'd hardly be challenged.

Back to my point on any footballing level we are un-equalled in English Football. Its abit like my neighbout fitting a turbo to his ford focus which brings its performance up alongside my ferrari...I still have the history, the badge and everything car related in my favour but for my neighbours bolt on short cut!

It's never been the clubs policy to go out and buy ready made stars. That doesn't mean that we couldn't attract them.

But thats the thing, thats nonsense. We've gone for top players plenty of times, we've just failed. The whole, 'we only make stars' is just way of putting positive spin on the fact that we cant really attract ready made ones (bar some exceptions of course).

Excuse me? When has anyone club you've mentioned except Real Madrid... Been richer than us? Or am i missing something. Flipping Juventus... You having a laugh. They couldn't afford Ashley Young's wages.

Oh The irony....like I said...what about the non financial reasons players apparently choose Chelsea..where are they when Shaw chooses us...

Er... Veron? RVN? And more recently, RVP?

Roll on Luke Shaw choosing us....

I hope you're right, but even then, Shaw is 2nd choice for them.

Take away City and Chelsea's owners and we'd hardly be challenged.

Sure, but that's like saying taking away our revenues and the headstart we got from the PLC.

People are living in cuckoo land if they think players give a toss about history and tradition. A player will chose the club that pays the most, and gives the best chance of success. Just look at City, PSG and Monaco for examples of that.

If he wants to win titles...Barca are a safer bet than Chelsea.

I mean in their individual leagues. Juventus obviously aren't as rich as us, but in their league, they're up there.

My point is if it wasn't for Chelsea and City winning the lottery, we'd still be the top destination in England and in Europe. They are nothing compared to us without their owners carrying them.

But when your ferrari is losing a little bit of his performance, the turbo ford focus could be faster? And if someone just wants a faster car right now, he will choose the Ford Focus. And right now and maybe the next 2,3 seasons Chelsea is the faster car.

See, its this stuff that annoys me. How can you honestly say, with a straight face, that we are a bigger draw then Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern? Its just nonsense.

It's well known that Ronaldinho was an "up and coming" potential in the making..

Barca is richer than us and Bayern are at the same level. He explained about Juve, richest (and so the most preferred destination) on their own country.

Yeah but he is not happy at Barca or they want to get rid of him. Real Madrid is not a option for obvious reasons and he would probably prefer a move to the well-known PL over Bayern Munich, so then which is the best option? Chelsea is a pretty good candidate.

In England we would and we'd attract more players across Europe too without City and Chelsea's influence. I never said that we'd attract players over Madrid, Barca or Bayern.

The Moyes effect.....Faster last season.....also in the past....Nothing to say we wont finish above them once more with Van Gaal if this summer goes as last summer should have gone.

And cheered on by 41,000 fans every week.....

You said we'd be the top destination in England and Europe?...Sorry if I've misunderstood you.

And yes, obviously without City and Chelsea's millions we'd be the top draw, but aren't we now venturing into 'morale winners' territory?

You said "My point is if it wasn't for Chelsea and City winning the lottery, we'd still be the top destination in England and in Europe."
"In Europe" includes Madrid, Barca and Bayern.

Regardless, why are people still living in fantasy land where City and Chelsea's owners/influence disappear?
They are here and until they're not, live with it.

My mistake for not being more clear.

Yeah maybe we are venturing into 'moral winners territory' but there are people belittling the size of this club too. There's always going to be one extreme to another though.

We have lived with it admirably as a club. Easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I meant we'd attract more top players across Europe than we currently do with City and Chelsea around. Again, my mistake.

At the moment it's not likely, anything can happen, but I wouldn't bet on it that we will finish above them next season especially with mentioned signings like Filipe, Diego Costa and Fabregas. And even when we won the titles before Moyes, we don't look that great and mighty at all. Especially our performances in Europe were not that good, so that could give some people (maybe the likes of Fabregas) that our team isn't that good and that Ferguson was a huge part of our success. Chelsea had some shit seasons too, but even in that seasons they won the CL and the EL, I think for people who are not die hard PL-fans or don't concentrate that much on PL, Chelsea made a better display in the last months and for the near future.
It also not that easy to explain every player, that we were only that shit because of Moyes. Yeah I am the same opinion, but even in the Caf a lot of people think our squad is a big mess.

It's never been the clubs policy to go out and buy ready made stars. That doesn't mean that we couldn't attract them.
Our record when we have pursued said targets is very poor. Especially in recent years - Mata and van Persie aside, although both were unique circumstances.

We're a massive club, obviously. In terms of global appeal, fan base, marketing etc etc we're right up there with the best. But in terms of pulling power for players, I think we're quite far behind the likes of Real, Barcelona, Bayern...and I'd say we're behind Chelsea and City to thesedays. Which, for a club of our size, isn't right. As we're clearly a far bigger club then either of those two.

With FPP, I suspect we've now much more attractive than City.
Without the financial muscle, they are not as much as a pulling threat.

Chelsea is a tough one because they have money AND location.

But who knows, maybe Woodward isn't bullsh*ting about that war chest and he'll unleash it this summer.
I hope I'm proven wrong and we attract some major stars and be the envy of the muppets kingdom.
