Chelsea agree £32m fee with Atletico Madrid for Diego Costa

Strong favorites for next season for me (as long as they buy a decent CM or Van Ginkel turns out to be as good as his backers suggest) with Mourinho ready to turn them from hard to defeat to heard to stop, too.

Even a decent but unspectacular 8 like Paulinho (who they're rumoured to get) would help them since Ramires can't pass and Lampard can't run.
Favorites, yes, but I can't say they'd be strong favorites if City bolster their defense.

Like you say, if they can add a proper, class CM they'll have the best XI in the league.

Thats a pretty good deal for Chelsea considering the fact that earlier this year AM wanted £50m for him. And he is going to be Suarez MK II.

Will be a good buy for Chelsea. Fits the system that Mourinho wants to play very well, and is a big upgrade on the strikers they have at the moment.

Aren't there laws in England regarding buying players like him? You can't buy a part of a player, you must buy him all. And Atlético don't own Diego Costa 100% so those 32 million wouldn't be the whole sum.

should be a good signing for them, even if he is an utter prick

I always think that Costa isn't particularly quick, which makes me wonder if he would perform well in a Chelsea team. He's certainly no Drogba, who despite most of us United fans disliking him, was a tremendous striker.

Got to feel that Chelsea and City will be much stronger next season after their new managers buy the players they want. We have a job to get back up there.

I'd say he's very similar to Drogba but less prolific in every way possible, including his speed. Droga was incredible, though.

I understand the low price, after all he is a bit of a one season wonder and nobody knows how he is going to follow up this. Just a year ago he was a 25 year old striker who never scored more than 10 league goals in a season.

He will be 26 early next season which is rather old for any radical improvements.

But he does fit Chelsea under Mourinho perfectly, he will add grit to the striker formation and Mourinho will finally have his 11 players defending together as a unit. They will be incredibly hard to beat.

They have had some interesting high price strikers over the years haven't they.

Shevchenko, Torres, Sutton, Mutu. Will he end in that company? Or up with Drogba.

I hope he becomes Torres MK II.

Please :(
Not the pre Chelsea Torres, I hope.

I can't seem to decide whether he'll be hounded by the press if he carries on his antics here or whether premier league defenders will pay him back in kind. Ideally it will be both!

Will score 20 league goals next season. Should've waited till their last game like we have with Shaw. But we're classy and history and stuff

Naive if you think all but a few transfers aren't agreed informally weeks before an official agreement, especially outside of the transfer windows. Didn't Moyes say we first got a sniff of Mata in November?

Absolute cnut of a player. His antics on a regular basis would put Suarez's diving and play faking to a shame. Jose and him would form a vomit inducing combination. One will go to any despicable length on the field and the other off the field. arghhh....

Got a feeling he'll be a flop.

I can see him following a similar career path to Drogba. It's easy to forget that in his first season at Chelsea he wasn't even guaranteed first choice ahead of Gudjohnsen and he managed just 10 league goals. He was criticised a fair bit for not being the best finisher/goalscorer and there were plenty that called him a donkey or even a flop at the start of his second season. Costa doesn't look a clinical finisher or a natural goalscorer to me at all so I can see him doing similar. He offers so much through the rest of his game and fits Chelsea's style of play so well that he'll be a big asset to them even if he has those teething problems though.

Just imagined a Spain-England WC QF in which Costa cheats to win Spain the game. Would be hillarious.

Some weird comments here. He is not among the very best strikers, I think most would agree, but he is not a one season wonder, he is not some bloke who suddenly with 30 decided to have a good season. He is not even in his prime yet. And he doesn't play for a team like RM who create chance after chance for their strikers, but for Atletico whose success is based on their strong defence. So Costa usually only gets 2-3 good balls in a game and usually takes one of them. He is a good finisher. He also creates a lot of opportunities, works hard, helps out in defence and even in games he doesn't score he is very useful (like he did against Chelsea by working hard and winning a crucial pen).

This is the key thing for me. He'l fit them like a glove.

Then they go on to lose the final to Brazil. Poetic justice after what Costa did to them.

Not bothered about that at all. Just though it would be funny if Costa started his Chelsea career as public enemy no. 1.

Still prefer a Suarez-related shit-storm during the group stage, but the tournament appears to offer so much!

Plenty of one season wonders you could have said all of that about in the past. Amir Zaki, Diego Tristan etc. I mean, you could even be describing Demba Ba at Newcastle!

You'll be left disappointed. He's not exactly a one season wonder either, his role simply has changed since Falcao has left. He was prolific in what he did before this season as well.

How many of those played well in almost every big game against top opposition though? Costa this season has scored crucial goals this season in the league already against RM, Athletic Bilabo (in both games), the Barca game ended 0-0. These are the top 4 in Spain this season. Then he scored in both games against Milan in the CL quarters including the priceless away goal. Then he scored against Chelsea in the CL (and won the pen which also was a clear pen).

In their best season? All of them.

Then go on. You are a stats freak, right? Maybe you can find a similarly impressive example I gave you with Costa? I actually struggle to think of a season where Rooney had such an impressive record against top teams in one season in the league AND Europe, let alone someone like Demba Ba.

8 in 8, in his debut season in the CL. Costa has gradually got better in the past 3 seasons. 10 in 16 for Rayo Vallecano, 20 in 44 last year playing off Falcao, and 36 goals this season, and this is not including everything else he brings to the table. Drogba was a bit unknown outside of France before his proper breakthrough season at Marseille and he was 26 when Chelsea signed him, and look how he turned out. I think Costa will be a great fit for them, and the natural successor to the Drog.

Yeah, he has won them so many points, and it's not like he scores a goal to make it 4-0 or something, Atletico hardly batter teams, no he rather scores the only goal at the Bernabeu or San Siro to win the away games 0-1.

To be honest, I'm not bothered. I don't think for example, he's better than Falcao was for them. I don't think he's one of the top strikers in the world, he just plays in a system that suits him. Wouldn't surprise me to see him struggle.

Or is that just wishful thinking?

He does seem like the sort of striker that Mourinho relishes, no? Hard-working, good hold-up play, aggressive, strong -- quite similar to Drogba, as some have noted, but also Diego Milito under Mourinho, and perhaps also Benni McCarthy. I fear they'll become a much stronger side with him spearheading their attack.

To be fair not many striker could match Ronaldo and Messi goal scoring record in the league for even one season (yeh I know both Ronaldo and Messi has been injured for a while)
