Champions League Quarter Finals | Chelsea vs Real (Tue) | Bayern vs City (Wed)

Pretty disappointing. We should have scored 3 or 4. Especially because Chelsea were reduced to 10. We were lazy in front of the goal. So many big opportunities wasted.

Hopefully we go through anyway.

Potentially. Might not have scored obviously...

Face it you were below par against 10 or 11 men tonight. They are still in the tie.

So what exactly makes this a 1-0 type of performance against 11 men if there is a player that gets sent off in the 58th minute to avoid a very clear chance to make it 2-0?

It seems it's perfectly fine for you to determine it's a 1-0 type of performance for 90 minutes, but if such action happens in the 58th minute then it's all about "potentially" and "we don't know what would have happened".

If you want to be skeptical do it in both directions or your biases will very rapidly suffice.

Cucurella
Mudryk
Enzo Fernandez
Badiashile
Aubameyang
Sterling
Koulibaly
Wesley Fofana

0 goals for £600 millions

What do you mean 0 goals? Half of those players have scored multiple goals each.

impressed with enzo again . If we score first and early ish at home we'll beat them i reckon . problem is we cannot score right now
Enzo? I'm trying to work out which Chelsea player played the worst and Enzo is in the mix. Ariza nor Siva made a complete arse of themselves. As for the rest not much between them for the worst player. Sterling I can understand but wtf happened with Reece James? Awful performance.

Fat Frank sounds a bit depressed in the interview. I really don't understand why he wanted to come back. Is it just his love for the club, or is it actually top level hubris that he thought he had somehow gotten much better as a manager since his abject failure with Everton?

His poorest game for us so far. Gave the ball away so many times.

He got sacked cos he was gonna get Everton relegated.
To then get a chance for a cl knockout tie v Madrid
Would be silly to turn it down cos I can't see him getting this chance ever again

I’d say the chance to earn a ton of cash for a couple of months work - when three freak performances could win the CL - and blame someone else if/when it all goes south was pretty tempting.

100%, couldn't say no. Highest profile job he could hope to get and loves the club.

He got an unexpected scratch card from Willy Wonka now owning his lifelong club!

I imagine he doesn't need the cash, but you are probably right about the chance to win the CL. Still, he would have known about the issues with the squad and his own limitations as a manager, so it would always have been a huge longshot, when you have to get through CL experts like Madrid and a really well-oiled side like City.

As if that’s ever stopped extremely wealthy men wanting more wealth.

The chance to manage a CL knockout tie against Real Madrid with almost none of his, admittedly nonexistent, reputation on the line.

You scored only once before and after the red. Your level tonight was not great. You only managed two goals tonight because Chelsea are so poor.

It's a bit like giving me the chance to go 12 rounds with prime Mike Tyson, though.

Chelsea did nothing but defend with numbers all game. Not that easy to score a lot of goals against an opponent that is set up specifically to stop you from doing that

I know I have criticized this stat in the past, so hypocritical from me, but whichever person with two eyes can clearly see that was not a 1-0 type of performance for 90 minutes when there were plenty of chances for a 2-0 score before the 60th minute.

Dumb by Real not to score more and be done with it.

City look head and shoulders above everyone else. It's their year, but for real this time.

Every year it's City year.

In fact, every year is Guardiola year to win the UCL since he moved to Bayern, somehow he hasn't won it since he had GOAT Messi and GOAT midfielders Xavi e Iniesta.

Seems like this is his year fr fr :D

It was a good match for Chelsea they only lost by two goals, we should have scored more to secure advancing as we now have to go as the second leg isn't going to be at the Santiago Bernabéu.

It was mad the way so many Madrid players almost looked like they couldn’t be arsed. Carvajal and Rodrigo both ignored the ball rolling right past them at a couple of points in the game.

They were toying with Chelsea. Put it this way, they're a team of serial winners, and they fully expect to go through. If Chelsea score at SB, Madrid will raise their level accordingly.

With Milan and Inter winning on the other side, City vs Madrid could pretty much be the final. What looked a tough draw for City has completely opened. feck

Yes but this year the quality of the remaining CL teams is much worse than in recent years imo.
Only team that can raise their game to City's is Real and even they look bad from time to time. Bayern shot themselves in the foot.
Inter, Milan, Benfica, are nowhere near that good while Napoli started to derail.

Okay, boxing is a dangerous sport but would you say no to an invitation to play 3 sets against Roger Federer? ;)
Okay, so that's five minutes gone, what would I do with the rest of my day?

Yeah, multiple goals like it has been all season for Chelsea.

Guardiola’s a great manager but he did won his CLs with some remarkable bad refereeing (Ovrebo in 2009 and Busaca and Stark in 2011). He could have at least gone to one more final with Bayern when he stood against Atletico in the semis of 2016 and his firsts years at City (2017 - 2020) were awful at CL knockout stages (although those QF of 2019 v Tottenham he had bad luck).

Nonetheless, the last 3 years have been the ones he has shown better results and consistency, losing the final in 2021and being outed by a great Madrid last year. This is his opportunity for a rematch and a very likely chance of winning since 2011. I don’t think the winner will come out from Napoli / Inter / Milan TBH.

While I absolutely agree that (my) milan are nowhere near the quality of a city, real or bayern (who is?), we can absolutely beat any of them in a one-off match. the only team I think we couldn't keep up with is bayern, and they decided to pull the most moronic move in the history of sport last month.

The city that wiped bayern 3-0 is unplayable, though. Whoever comes out from the left is obviously a HEAVY favourite... But that just gives me Barcelona v Milan final vibes.

Fans of other top clubs in Europe rooting for Real Madrid to extend the gap they have on everyone else in terms of European trophies will never not be confusing
They're unassailable. History of the competition shows that anyone not named Real will take around 100yrs to catch up to their current haul... it's immaterial how many they are ahead by for our lifetimes.

We don't care what other mainland European clubs do, either, but English clubs outside of us winning it is sacrilegious and worsens our position irrespective of who it is (if behind us; edges them closer; if near us; draws parity; if already ahead; widens the gap), so it's pretty simple within said framework.

(your) Milan turnaround is quite an achievement and if they get past Napoli (not finished yet) they have a good chance to play the final.
But in all honesty, looking back at past finalists, they look weak, nowhere near the teams who lost finals in the past 10-15 years.
