Champions League Quarter Finals (3rd - 11th April)

Deserved win for Liverpool. Guardiola made a big mistake with Gundogan who is too slow for this type of games and was chasing shadows in the first half. Another mistake was Laporte who isn't a left back. Pointless to experiment against Salah with a makeshift LB. And Sane had a bad day at the office. City still have a chance to go through if Salah misses the second leg. Henderson won't be available too. Liverpool showed superhuman fitness levels in the first half and destroyed City's way of play. They were a bit lucky too with the first goal which changed the game.

This. City fell apart after that goal.

Never seen such an unlucky display from a single team in Barcellona! Roma were perfect: closed Barca down well and were always dangerous upfront. Should have had 1 penalty at least as well.

Lol at Pep! Got owned by Klopp again

This result is seriously bad news for Mourinho.

Until now he's been able to justify City's superiority to United by saying that they're miles ahead of everyone due to the amount they've spent. Even when we surrendered to them in December he didn't receive too much criticism.

But now another team, our other biggest rival at that, has shown they are beatable - and exposed Mourinho's defensive approach against City as wrong. What's worse, they've gone it playing an aggressive pressing game that is completely anathema to Mourinho.

Let's hope our manager can take liverpool's approach and emulate it. If he can't then the press and fans are going to hound him with ten times the ferocity they're doing now.

Christ almighty...

City to be awarded a 3-0 win after Liverpool are charged for trouble before the game.

Imagine finding a way to spin this result into something to bash Jose over. Mental.

What the.. Don't tell me some of these pundits can defend Pep for his tactics today ?
At the moment, they're dissecting replays of a possible penalty for City (the Sterling incident).

They're fecking desperate to find some way to keep Pep on his pedestal.

BBC - radio shite, TV worse (hardly any live sport). Roll on the day we can pick and choose whether to opt out of paying for the TV licence.

I think this is really good for the sport. I hate the tikka tikka shit, its like watching juniors vs seniors. This is how you take down this man with his feckin oil money. At least Mou has proven him self winning with Porto. That result (3-0) will be very hard for city to advance from.

Feck Pep and City, its wonderful to see them panic a bit. Congrats to Lpool, well done and don't worry because they won't go all the way. Not a chans, not this year at least.

Perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised by this result. Klopp is the only manager with a winning record against Guardiola for a reason. The 4-3 game was not a fluke. He has Pep on lock and tactically outclassed him again. Big ask for Man City to come back from this but they did score 5 against Liverpool already this season at Etihad so it's not impossible even if Liverpool score. CL has seen crazy comebacks but they'll need a lot of luck. Liverpool probably aren't going to get a red card for starters!

 Where to even start? Are you Oli Holt under that avatar?

The few times i watched him, i thought he clearly makes more mistakes than i remembered him. Based on the CL and the few Italy games. I dont watch Serie A regularly, but i wasnt impressed with him as much as i was with Juve‘s defense with Bonucci (that includes Chiellini)

Against Spurs half the win is his. Overall he's having an amazing season, yesterday night was the first bad game I saw this year and that was magnified by the monster he was playing against.

Meanwhile as I expected City will most likely follow thru the other plastic club out of the competition, that was why I wanted to draw them in the QF, in CL history is very important

Think the tie is largely done, barring injuries to Liverpool. With Pool's front 3 I expect them to get at least a goal at the Etihad, and I can see City scoring a few but definitely not 5.

Weird critique given we've just protected our lead eminently.

City had like 85% possession in the 2nd half. It was pure luck that they did not concede. Modern defending means retain possession, make the opposition chase the ball, draw little fouls, waste time on throw-ins and free kicks. All Liverpool did was three second hoof it and back it came immediately. There were so many examples where they played the wrong pass. It´s also a reason Liverpool never develop counterattacking chances, even when they are up 3-0. From the 30th to 90th minuts ONE time, they actually retained possession for a longer stretch, made City chase the ball deep, and they created the Solanke to Mane chance.

I thought they had figured it out against Porto, where they retained possession, made Porto chase and killed them on the break 2-3 times. If that was Barcelona or Madrid, they would have conceded 2-3 goals in the 2nd half.

Somebody said it right: If Klopp ever figured out how to play it smart, they´d be unplayable. At the same time there are also some technical limitations, which is why they need one more guy in midfield that has the calm and presence to take control of a match.

Also I swear just watch Moreno the last 10 minutes and how often he managed to get into a bad position. That dude is so dumb. Every five games Lovren does commit a silly error, because he is haunted by the ghost of Moreno.

Absolutely, he has been talking them up all year. Even this week saying that we can't compete....we can't compete mostly because of his cowardly tactics.
You could hear in the press conferences that Klopp was going to take them on and true to his word so they did.

They won 3-0. What are you on?

I've no problem with Liverpool winning if they can actually challenge Bayern and the Spanish sides... but that second half they seemed like a Championship side struggling to hold a nil nil draw against a PL team. They looked like a drowning man clinging to a rock while wave after wave came crashing down upon them. Maybe by some miracle, Pep can conjure up a 3-0 victory and beat them in penalties but all Liverpool needs is a goal to put it out of practical reach. I have no love for City but I think they can actually beat the Spanish sides but who knows, didn't think this would happen either. It looks like the weaker team will advance.

City couldn't register a single shot on target ..

Not over, especially if Salah is out.

Liverpool were very disciplined in the second half but if they try to play out the second leg that way they are just asking for trouble, go into a shell, goals can come quickly when it breaks, hard to come and play once you commit to that mentality.

City have been exposed as rather 1 dimensional by Liverpool, ironic given that Liverpool also have that problem. No-one should pretend that Liverpool team is full of great players though, makes it more annoying as a Utd watching it given how ludicrously craven we were against Sevilla and other challengers. The myth that you need world class everywhere before you have a go is a self protecting propaganda.
Decent post.

They didn't have a shot on target, how is it pure luck ?

Liverpool had less possession/territory in the 2nd half in part because they were happy to surrender it. You don't need to dominate the game when you're already leading 3-0; perfectly sensible to defend the space instead, especially when your best player has gone off and City had brought Sterling on to run in behind.

I think that's pretty unfair assessment, given that they didn't really crumble during the second half.

This was exactly the same game as United vs Liverpool. Quick goals in the first half and consolidating in the second. They could have had a few more in the first half. City for all the possession did not trouble karius much, just like Liverpool for all their possession in the second half against us, didnt trouble ddg at all.

Home advantage has a huge say in how a team plays. Liverpool were at home and once they scored, they dominated. It will be City who will dominate in the return leg and Liverpool will be under severe pressure. Granted I still think Liverpool have a goal in them, which will end the tie.

City shots on target....0

Nah, we are not even close to 2013.

I agree, that team was impressive. This Bayern is very strong and he can still win it even though is not the main favourite, but several players are past their top, at the time I remember that you were unplayable.

As United fans under Sir Alex, that myth should have never established itself in United fans minds. He brought the best out of very average players throughout his time here.

Nonsense. We didn’t concede a goal at Anfield and city conceded 7.

You don’t judge a manager on one game. Hyperbolic rubbish.

Wasn't Salah slightly offside for the first goal? Similarly to Sane when Jesus scored.

Talking shite, just like those before Istanbul. Careful what you wish for

If it is about the matches with Bayern - Klopp won all the meaningless matches, Pep the important ones. Exception was a cup semi final in which Lahm and Alonso were slipping etc. ...

This 100%.

Possession was apparently 55-45 to City 1st half, Liverpool did more with theirs - esp the turnovers. City might have had 1 shot (some people are claiming there was one, :D)

Dunno for the 2nd, probably more ball to City again, big share of the ball it seemed like, from which they had 1 chance when the ball didn't reach Sane & 1 penalty shout was it?

Quite a lot of piss-poor corners got slung in, the first man had a proper busy night heading those away, innit?

I don't think LFC were magnificent by any means - they didn't have to be.

I thought Liverpool defended really well in that second half. Scoring three on counter I've seen them do before, but containing a team while having only 10-20% possession I haven't.

City didn't react well at all though, maybe that's why even Lovren looked like a player.
