Champions League Knockouts (12 Aug - 23rd Aug)

Surely we have to want Bayern to win the final (if they beat Lyon obviously!) over the evil oil boys?
Lyon > Bayern > PSG for me. Even if it means they get to 6 CLs, I'd much rather have Bayern win it than fecking PSG.

So, does winning this edition of the CL count properly? Or is it mostly a consolation CL. Or CL*, if you will?

I guess that depends on who wins it. I think if Bayern win it a lot of people will give them full credit, because they have been quite dominant, in particular against Barca. For Lyon it would be the exact opposite.

Yep, I agree with your order.

As much as your gang and ours don't usually agree on much, I think we'd all prefer the Chelsea/City/PSG to win as little as possible with their oil gotten gains.

Very much, yeah. I don't like nor hate Bayern for any specific reasons, but I have a lot of respect for them.

What the feck was the Leipzig manager thinking wearing that suit?

Almost made me want them to lose.

Hope PSG win. Can't stand Bayern to be honest, they are too good. Think they will win it quite easily, the gulf in class between them and Lyon/PSG is substantial.

Would feel a lot more receptive to a PSG win if Cavani was still on the squad. Really a shame he won't get a chance to capitalize on the work he's done there over the last decade with a CL final appearance.

He decided to leave to get a last juicy contract, i have no sympathy for his decision.

Fantastic match by PSG, very impressive.

They had fantastic players for years, but I have never seen them run and fight together like a real team like this.

If we beat Lyon tomorrow, Bayern - PSG could be a great final... Probably especially for neutral fans, like a 5:4 at the end

This PSG side is giving me Argentina vibes. Very top-heavy with excellent attackers but defence & midfield lacking compared to other top international teams.

The same. Cavani is the only mercenary football player I know. He should be so gutted :D

I hate he try to fouled people into thinking he was a humble, selfless player. He had the opportunity to win 3 trophies with PSG including a CL, he decided to leave so he can negociate a damn contract with a club in Portugal. He got what he deserved.

Thiago Silva stayed and he deserves to be the captain, amazing display at 36.

That's a very good comparison. I would agree with that.

Would be crazy if Lyon manage to win the Champions League from this position. I don't think it'll happen, Bayern are the favourites.

Lyon are my ideal pick.
Bayern are the favourites.
Which means that PSG will win it.

Bayern are going to slaughter PSG in the final.
I'm not sure about that.

Neymar, Mbappe and di Maria are absolutely lethal on their day and their whole team kept the ball extremely good.

Their fullbacks are a little weak spots but otherwise they are a fantastic team with an obviously quite good mentality.

I don't watch the french league so I only see PSG for some matches a year in the CL. But I haven't been this impressed with them since the 4:0 against Barcelona.

The guy was paid 100% during the lockdown
He could have had the same monthly salary in August,
He could have been part of this Lisboa experience and tried to win the Champions League
He could have played to seduce future recruiters
But he prefers to hunt boars and is now dreaming about Benfica

Well, the reality is that we stopped to be champions once Zlatan gone (Monaco) and started to be champions again when Neymar/Mbappe came: it shows that Cavani is not an important player. Also on the decline since December 2017

Yeah, I hate his fake "i'm a simple man, i love nature and go to my village in urugay on my spare time to help farmers". He ditched a chance to win th CL to sign a last contract with Benfica. Ridiculous.

Verratti is definitely a world class midfielder though. So wouldn't full go along with that (plus they have grafters around him, and he'll be fit for the final).

I'm backing PSG vs Bayern. There'll be some big mismatches on their side. Kimmich vs Mbappe, Neymar vs any of their defensive players. The only big advantage I see on Bayerns side is Bernat vs Gnabry. If Mbappe and Neymar can finish in the final, I think PSG will take it.

Is Verratti really world-class though? Where's this reputation coming from?

I don't remember him dominating a big game like Kroos vs Arsenal in 2013/14 or Rakitic vs Real Madrid in 2013/14. He hasn't had a single defined midfield masterclass performance yet, or maybe my memory is faulty.

Lets face it, Bayern's midfield is 2 levels above ours. But with players like Neymar, Mbappe or Di Maria, everything is possible.

I'd rate our chances 30/70.

Offensively capable of brillance (although cant remember the last time Neymar stood out) but Bayern are just utterly ruthless and I cant see PSG matching them in midfield or coping at the back.

And the bolded bit is the most important I feel. PSGs mentality will be a massive hurdle for them to overcome. They were something else in the 4-0 game vs Barca you mention but still bottled the second leg (dodgy ref aside). A pretty similar PSG team played us off the pitch and still made a balls of the second leg despite our team being horrific on paper that night.

You would wonder if they have learned their lessons from those 2 games. Even so I still feel Bayern will be too strong for them.

But then again Chelsea beat Bayern somehow so there is that.

Will Verratti be back for finals? I thought Paredes was pretty pedestrian, don't fancy a center back, paredes and di maria to do well vs Bayern press machine

Could it be said this format has hugely helped PSG? In a 'normal' season playing it alongside a league they stroll seems to work against them as they lack the competitive sharpness others who are fighting for something domestically have, now all the final 8 are/were in the same boat and their quality is finally shining through in this competition.

also what I noticed. would you be confident against them?

Thiago Silva is a genius, he won't be passing high risk balls into midfield without Verratti in there. You'll see the players at the back passing it long to the attackers. That's where PSG will take the game. Barca caused alot of their own problems in that match.

I'd love it if he could take a bit of extra risks sometimes but there's no defensive player in the world that can read an play better than him. He's also a monster when it comes to aerial long ball trajectories. He lacks a bit of agressiveness tough but i forgive him. He was blamed for being too emotive far too much imo.

Hoping for an absolute trashing in the final: 6-0 Lewandoski x3, Gnabry, Coman, Tolisso. 6 assists for Thiago

Wtf was the previous talk about Bayern’s high line? Sitting deep isn’t the only way to contain world class players, or Messi would have torn Bayern to shreds. Their constant pressing with that high line will be more detrimental than helpful to Neymar, snake, Mbappe etc etc, if Bayern even make it that far. No foregone conclusions, especially against Lyon. They’d do well to remember that.

We need Verratti to get out of high pressure situations. Otherwise we're fecked. Paredes/Marquinho/Herrera is just not enough.
