Champions League 24/25 | Matchday 5: November 26-27

Gonna have the usual moaning from the commentators about the Villa goal being disallowed even though its clear in the rules you can't challenge a keeper while they're in the air.

The rules are total and utter bollocks then. The contact was more the keeper jumping into the player than the other way around

Keepers are far too protected.

"every right to go for the ball" - Actually, no, there is no right to go for the ball in that scenario.

I'm sure they read off a script.

Its one of the few rules that is actually applied consistently...usually.

Did the referee give a foul at the end? It didn't look like VAR intervened, so I presume the referees initial decision was a foul, though I initially thought his onfield decision was a goal.

The referee didn't go to the monitor which I assume is a standard for any potential fouls?

What's up with Dutch teams? Eindhoven with another unbelievable comeback being 0:2 down until the 88 minute to win 3:2.

Aye, even at our very best, we never fully dominated or comprehensively beat RM.
This Madrid side was comprehensively beaten at home by AC Milan's merry band of Chelsea rejects in the last gameweek.

What a joke VAR is. Nothing wrong at all with the goal Villa scored. Not a clear and obvious mistake.

I don't thik it was VAR who disallowed it and its not a mistake at all. You can't challenge a keeper when their feet are off the ground and that is exactly what happened.

Will Liverpool win the Champions League this season? Bloody hell that would be so annoying

Not really. Its a safety thing. Keeper is in mid air and can't protect themselves with their arms if they're trying to catch or punch the ball. Its about preventing serous injury. You can't tackle mid air in rugby either.

If no one challenged or contacted him and he fumbled it anyway then it would't be a foul. I thought it was a Juve player but on the replay a Villa guy goes into him.

Its unlucky but that's about it imo.

Looking on the replay, I think it's a probably a foul, even if it is a bit soft.

We played Real thrice in Fergie's reign at United (he beat them with Aberdeen in 83).

2000, 2003 and the Nani game in 2013.

Liverpool meet Madrid every season these days and have lost more than they've won. We played and beat plenty of Europe's best in our day. Hopefully, it won't be long until we are back on it, even if we have to remortgage the house to attend.
Alright but they have beaten them over 2 legs once, and 1 leg twice. We beat them once over 2 legs a long time ago, overwise it's all losses.

Edited.

I'm not sure they have the players to do it differently. They have collected athletics midfielders, the have sacrificed technical and passing ability.
Kroos and the aging of Modric are massive blows to Madrid. Camvinga and Jude just cannot control or compare the games like those two did.

I don't think that's true. The keeper can't be challenged when they have possession, which is why that was ruled out, as he has two hands on the ball when the challenge is made.

You aren't barred from making a challenge when a goalie jumps. Otherwise coaches would just make them listen to Kriss Kross for 90 minutes on their air pods.

So what your saying is, a keeper could dive into an attacker with his feet of the ground and it would be given as a freekick to the keeper?

The keeper jumped into him. Nothing wrong with that goal.

You can't challenge a keeper in the air, which is what he did. There's nothing to argue about.

Well apparently there is but its pointless because the ref had no choice but to rule it out.

Camvinga is a disappointment in that regard, he was supposed to be the midfielder who could control play and passing like Modric and Kroos did. Jude was never going to be that type of player.

Not quite and we are just being silly. If the keeper is going for the ball and the opposing player is going for the ball, the keeper is by default the one who is being fouled:

"If an attacker challenges for the ball while it's against the goalkeeper's hand or arm, the goalkeeper's safety takes priority and the attacker's challenge is considered an offense"

There's nothing about that statement that doesn't apply to the Villa goal. You can't expect the ref to re-write the rules. Just because PL refs seem to frequently do this does't mean its correct.

Its unlucky, but it is what it is.

Camvinga is very good, Jude imo massively overrated.
Camavinga is a lovely player.
But nah, Jude is not meant to be the metronome, he's at his best when he's got licence to roam free.
Real's actually had a similar player in Valverge.
Odegaard who's used to be in their book would have been good as Kroos' replacement though.

You can that about many of RMs players, they cannot all roam.

You are comparing him to 2 very different players, he's an absolutely fantastic player but he cannot do everything.

Zubimendi is rumoured to be heading there on January transfer window, maybe along with Xabi replacing Ancelotti.
