Chain Draft (Main Thread)

Modern players have lots of links and can be got at easily. So makes sense to start with a oldie or one club star and work towards better links down the line.

To be fair, with so many doing the same reasoning these lads could easily string 4-5 top calibre worldies before anyone can do much about it. There's already managers that look like they will clearly get in trouble and managers that seem to have a very clear wide open field ahead.

It's a short hop from Robson to Fledglings to Galacticos and elsewhere.

Precisely, how is Sir Bobby on the way there?

Charlton is much more difficult esp with the decade restrictions in place! Lots of one club or British only players there. Easy to get stuck in mediocrity.

Errr... not sure about the getting stuck thing, he could also string many players together unopposed. It's an all-time draft, there's tonnes of combinations. He surely didn't pick Charlton thinking about going to the fledglings and beyond, not with Robbo already picked, it's too massive a chasm. Unless I'm missing someone, of course.

Bobby Charlton is an interesting one. Given how long he was at the club, I'm not too sure who the second pick would be that is both a great player on par with others being picked, and links to a third player that hasn't played with Bobby. Might be someone obvious I'm missing in my quick think of United players though.

He can draft freely, but the pool is not that big. At best he can get the trinity, but when he moves forward in time, he'll find good picks already chosen by Robson. So I thought he might get stuck in mediocrity there.

I was surprised with Charlton pick tbh, esp after Robbo was picked. They were my first choices!

I think I know where he is going, which ain't bad at all TBF.

It's blocked!

Oh I have a plan and a chain in mind just a quick query for example player a and player b played together in90s and 00s can he qualify as one or other or does he qualify as both

You might have to specify that when selecting your 11 for a match.

I don't get it. It doesn't matter when they played together, all that matters is that they did. A and B played together means you can pick C who played with B and not with A. When? Nobody cares, so long as it's true.

Doesn't need to. Peak is career peak, not at time of link. There's no way we should be explaining all links in match threads, that's what the gamethread is for.

The ops are long enough as it is.

The decade rule applies to date of birth, not the years a player played in

 so that was what he was babbling about...

We need to go back to Decade drafts. I don't even check birthdates, I just remember which draft a player was in, don't you? Handy.

Would I ever steer you wrong? :)

Meh, you'll have to show your hand before I pick so I'm not fussed.

I had a Plan A and @mazhar13 impoverished it before I even started, then @green_smiley made me look into a Plan C, and depending on what you do I'll choose any of them three.

So long as I don't miss out on being able to post that player profile I already wrote... If I can't, god help you all.

Oddly though, no one seems to have gone for picking anyone's next obvious pick and being one step ahead on the same chain. That would have been funny as feck.
Sandro Mazzola

@Tuppet
Luis Suarez (Inter)

@berbasloth4
I was going with exactly this chain and came so close to get it. Thankfully had a backup.

That's exactly what I was aiming at! WTF took so long? I would have topped myself if SkizzoPat got into that having picked Charles and you know who first. Almost considered doing it myself if needed, just for ruining my awesome Plan B.

Nice one! :D

We definitely weren't thinking along the same lines then :)

I was toying with Gullit too, but I just couldn't find a chain I agreed with.

1. Unless I've missed a possible route, I think it takes me down a dark lonely road.
2. Had to cover my tracks, although I've probably missed something here too.
3. Couldn't decide between a few, but I think with this one I'd have the least regrets. Too much choice and hard to determine levels when looking at players in the last twenty years.

Anyway, based on the first picks, I think green_smiley's has the most potential.

Don't talk to me about the green ripper or the skizzopaths, there I was happily contemplating who should have the honour of playing with my handsome leftback and they started circling me like hungry hyenas

It is indeed a dark lonely road. Any ideas on how to get back? Surely the reset card can't involve a spectacular jump across decades?

@Edgar Allan Pillow, what's your take on that? I gave it for granted but surely a reset in 1930s Flamengo can't teleport you back to, say, United 2005? As a rule of thumb, it would probably be best to allow a third player from the same club/era or restarting one step back? That's of course after genuinely having got stuck, clearly, nobody is getting a third pick from a 00s United side because "he is stuck". It's almost impossible actually.

FWIW, I think instead of you dishing out possible targets, the manager should be allowed to make a case for a rather underwhelming target in the same content/era that they have researched and believe allows them to get back on track.
