Chain Draft (Main Thread)

Yes, the Capello and Trap pools were ridiculous if you could get full access. I remember being terribly chuffed that we snapped up both Matthaus and Tardelli, leaving Harms with relative no-marks shoring up his midfield. Grand strategy buggered by a draw against Pep's Barca/Bayern super (and un-upgradeable) hybrid.

Pleased to see plenty of early shafting going on here.
I did pretty well in the end

I'm not sure whether to move on to what I wanted to do or just shaft back for the sake of it. Depending on the next round my entire reason to play this may go out of the window, at which point I will be a very dangerous man to have lurking around

If it makes it any better....I didn't know I was shafting you :D

Those recent few picks are really going to hurt me horribly. Good thing I got a pick that can leave me with multiple options.

It's weird though, Vidic always has the Torres debacle against him (which was more or less debunked by an excellent @Pat_Mustard post) but the likes of Thuram (Munitis), Nesta (Henry) and Maldini (Kanchelkis, Laudrup etc) never have it brought against them - other than Gio that is. I understand that the latter trio are undisputable greats but it does get annoying after a while when the likes of Vidic etc get painted as liabilitites despite being terrific for the most part as well, just at a lower level than the likes of Nesta, Thuram and Maldini.

It's silly, no doubt about it.

There is a semblance of logic to it, though, since you can argue that what Torres did was to exploit an easily identifiable flaw in Vidic's game. The same is much harder to argue in the case of, say, Maldini.

It's still silly, of course, since Vidic's flaw hardly ever got him in trouble when he was otherwise on song. And the version of Torres in question was an exceptionally dangerous player.

@Edgar Allan Pillow, you need to clarify this.

Re: nationality card, I don't see what the problem would be as it's the same clearcut rule for everyone.

Re: the definition of "being stuck". IMO that should be:
  • there are no players that can be picked without breaking the A-B-C rule (i.e. everyone that can be picked also played with A)
  • players can be picked but only in a position already filled
  • there are no players that comply with ABC, in unfilled positions, which meet a standard equal or greater to whatever you define as "good"
  • as a rule of thumb, anyone who shone at an international or premier confederation club tournament (e.g. EC/CL/Libertadores/Mitropa champion) or played at a World Cup for one of the big nations should be considered at an equivalent or higher level and must therefore be picked. Big nations are defined as countries that won a World Cup Final or reached at least two finals.
  • if a player claims to be stuck and any other manager comes up with a player who meets the previous definition they are forced to take him. Tough shit, for being sketchy.
  • Managers have up to eight hours to challenge. In the meantime, the "good"player can be assigned and drafting proceeds but there can't be a next pick until the eight hours are over.

You need to threadmark this one too. Use this as I added the clarification on confed club tournos.

I realise there's a long way to go, but the players you referred to are 3/4/5 moves away
Yeah, and I have to be ready for that right now in order to prevent potential meltdowns. I completely forgot about Laudrup, for example. He has the potential to really ruin my picks.

Feck it

I'll look like a right boring twat if I pick a modern player now. Even if it is the right thing to do, my reputation is more important.

Sure Stobzilla picked Rivaldo who still has a good 15 years and 17 clubs left in him.

TBH, you are in a good place. I did wonder whether it wouldn't be better to start at the end and pick a chain knowing where everyone was standing. You have the opportunity to be on the frontfoot, while I can only react.

The way it is laid out one of you or Tuppet should be able to make an absolute killing.

There are some brilliant modern players to start off with, that you can even work backwards from through the decades and manage to pick off some gems that other players won't be able to get to.

Agreed, plenty of top notch modern players whom I'm really surprised haven't been picked yet.

This draft's gonna get me fired. How do you guys get anything done when its close to your turn ?

Exactly, these guys now know where anyone can get to any time soon, should be easy enough to steal a march and do some cherry-picking.

Oddly though, no one seems to have gone for picking anyone's next obvious pick and being one step ahead on the same chain. That would have been funny as feck.
