Centre Back... Who do we go for?

It has to be De Ligt, I don't see the point of throwing money at 29 year old plus.

I would also like to see Jones and Rojo moved on and Smalling moved to being a squad player.

I don't either and that is one of the criticisms I had of Jose. Signing a player that age, that could be well on the verge of decline and might need replacing in 2-3 years doesn't appeal to me one bit mate.

I also agree with you last point which I mentioned in a previous thread
I think Rojo should be the first one out as people moan about Phil Jones injury record (I'd get rid of him too). Jones and Rojo have similar injury records.

Rojo has only played 70 league games in 5 seasons and only 11 in the last 2 seasons sustaining 9 injuries and been injured for a total of 534 days. Not his fault but it is an abysmal record.

During the same time period Jones has played 74 games, had 12 injuries and been injured 453 days.

This is not good enough at all and due to this I think both need to go.

All in for De Ligt. He's our chance of a long term top class CD.

Agreed, and for such a young signing it should be easier for the board to sanction as a ‘club signing’ rather than e.g. a 29 year old who will only have one contract and no resale value

A few options are:

Koulibaly - ready made CB but he'd cost £100
de Ligt - will be a top tier CB and is already incredible at 19 (will cost £70m ish)
Manolas - Very solid CB (reportedly has a €36m release clause)
Alderweireld - Unlikely Spurs will sell in Jan but will have a £25m release clause in the summer.
Maguire - Will be sold in the summer imo but could cost up to £75m.

Magiure against city made me think that he is what we really need, how solid he was and how build up the play without being terrified and dont hoof the ball. I think we should consider him with Koulibaly and Toby.

Hilarious to see people mentioning Maguire again now after all the abuse he's got on here. I wanted him in the summer, still think he'd do well here, but he'll be a ridiculous price.

They probably will if we gave them the £25m + Smalling or Bailly.

We'd be stupid to give them that deal given that's Bailly's market value is arguably higher and Smalling has been our most consistent CB for the last few seasons. I guess it depends on whether Levy would take say £40m or keep a stronger squad for the second half of the season (it'll be near on impossible for them to replace Alderweireld with a player of similar quality).

Toby Alderweireld
Kalidou Koulibaly
-
Eder Militao
Konstantinos Manolas
Alessio Romagnoli
Nikola Milenkovic
Benjamin Pavard
Matthijs de Ligt

-We must sell to Jones, Darmian and Valencia

Koulibali is highly rated he is usually in the top five or six of world defenders behind ramos, varane, godin ,vandyk. The fact he is consideted in the same bracket or more of other top defenders like umtiti..pique..chilleni..brazalli..bonucci..hammels..tells something
Go for quality rather than price.
Mcgiure seems also quality but like any player from smaller team can he step up like vandyk or is this his max ability ?

Koulibaly and Maguire. Sort it and everyone stfu about it for years to come.

It may be a bit stupid - but it wouldn't surprise me if we went all out for De ligt considering that Liverpool have gone for Van dijk.

He is arguably the Dutch CB of his generation & have the ability to be better than virgil himself - so allows us to match & arguably possibly be better at the same time, same nation playing in the same league & North West of England.

Let it happen..

That would be a stupid deal for both sides . Spurs would rather keep him than getting 25m and an inferior defender.

We would be stupid to sell our best defender and 25m for 6 months.

We’re all hoping Mourinho gets sacked and I think it’s inevitable. Do you think he’s good enough to lift the United defense and good enough for a title challenging team?
I think he would excel at United especially with the new playing style. He has all the makings of a top CB.

Pretty sure blockhead is right-footed no?

Definitely good in the air but in about 2/3 seasons you're going to wonder why we parted with so much money for him. Eclipsed at international level (Gomez, Stones) & easily replaced at Leceister (Soyuncu, Benkovic)
You're right, thats my fault, for some reason I thought he was left footed. But he's still very good in the air, which is something our CBs lack (other than Smalling), good on the ball, and English. I agree that he's not a great CB on his own, but good enough to be a part of a very good defense.

From a footballing perspective, Koulibaly is far and away the best choice. LCB that is dominant, can play out from the back and is a leader. The only problem is from a financial standpoint its probably the worst deal. De Laurentis will over charge us for sure and with several other positions to recruit it may not be a good idea to spend so much on one CB.

For the price we'd spend on Koulibaly, we could sign Alderweireld for £25m and a top class young CB.

We need a CB who can do it all. Someone great in the air, good on the ball and someone with decent pace. Obviously Varane is the dream. Lindelof and Bailly are both average in the air. I really miss having Vidic who would clear everything. Thats why I think 'He who shall not be named' preferred to play Smalling. Im not liking the links to Militao who seems to be very lightweight. Alderweireld is a solid option but he isnt known for physicality. Koulibaly is the best option but he has signed a new contract. The ideal scenario would be Jones/Rojo leave, maybe Smalling leaves. We bring in Milenkovic in January who is a tank, and we sign Toby in the summer to play alongside him.

It's got to be Koulibaly. He's the full package.
And he plays on the left side, which is actually very important. We have 3 decent enough options but are compromised because neither plays their best on the left.

Yep. The only one that can play on the left is Rojo. And he's not good enough. Infact we should've kept Blind just for that reason . Until someone better arrived. I know he was poor in the air but the Smalling - Blind combo was my favorite of the last 5 years. They complimented each other very well.

Bailly and Koulibaly would be very solid! opposition attackers wouldn't get much change from those two.

I think we will get Toby plus one more.
I’d take Maguire in a heart beat.

We definitely need two and a right back IMO.

Why don’t you think smaling or beilly will do? Also pil jones and linderloaf can do a job, but I think we should get rid of roho.

If we do bring in more we definitely need to ship the likes of Jones and probably Rojo (though I personally like him but hes too rash as a player and simply not good enough).

Koulibaly has been my preferred choice for a while, in terms of top rated players I dont want its probably Varane. I would be fine if we got Maguire and Alderweireld

Milenkovic is another who will be tops.

Alderweireld will be just like the Sanchez deal. Desperation without any proper plan, signing an available big name just for the sake of it. We will still have the same problems if we sign him.

Milenkovic is another who will be tops.
I've only really seen Youtube videos of Milenkovic but he looks fairly limited in possession from a ball playing perspective. He doesn't look bad but it looks like he keeps things simple. Those clips may obviously not tell the whole story. He's also playing as a RB for Fiorentina which could limit the time he has on the ball. However, the list of players in my previous comment included those that are more comfortable on the ball (Manolas perhaps being the exception and included more due to his release clause).

I’d like to see us move Valencia, Jones, Rojo and Darmian all on then sign De Ligt and Maguire as well as recall Tuanzebe as between those three that would be centre back sorted for the next ten years potentially.

Koulibaly signing a new contract rules him out but Alderweireld is still an option even though I do get a touch of Sanchez if we signed him in that if he was still at the level he was before his club wouldn’t be so willing to let him go and would offer what he wanted.

Konstas manolas.. a beast defender, perfect age, (27) for right now.. lindelof/tuanzebe/bailly for the future..

"Manchester United eliminated one recruitment headache by dismissing Jose Mourinho earlier this month, permitting Ed Woodward’s gargantuan band of scouts to propose acquisitions without managerial dissent. While the obvious shortcomings of United’s squad remain, Woodward is only expected to sanction major investment on younger talents such as Matthijs de Ligt, of Ajax. Whether he can convince a player of such calibre to join United ahead of rival clubs is open to debate".

I'm fed up of this shit defence. Just buy a world class defender

I personally think we should pay whatever for the best CB we can get. We’re not hypocrites and it’s what we need.

We missed Van Dijk we need to do something big. Our current defence is problematic. We need to bring in
Kalidou Koulibaly and Toby Alderweireld, also keep an eye on De Ligt, if someone goes in for him then we should too with the option of loaning him back for 2 seasons.

Outs: Jones, Rojo, Darmien, Valencia.

To be fair to Mourinho in one respect (and I'd rather not), we definitely need centre backs as we're seeing problems all too clearly even now. Both Bailly and Rojo are nutcases that need sent on their way and Jones needs binned too. Quite a lot of transfer work for that area.
