Centre Back... Who do we go for?

Godin's a fantastic CB but this would be another stop-gap veteran signing and I dont want anymore of those. The only way I'd be happy with this is if it was a good price, a short deal and we also bought a younger, excellent CB too. Sell Jones and Rojo.

I am torn about Godin. He is a damn good player still and used to playing in a lowblock defence at Atletico. If Mourinho had gone for him two years ago and not bought Lindelöf and Bailly I would have been all for it.
Now it would be a stop-gap solution that would cement Godin and Smalling in our central defence as long as Mourinho stays and most likely force a player like Bailly out.
Maybe if we were fighting for the league and with a realistic possibility to win the CL, it might be a good idea. Now I lean to that it would just stop us from addressing the CB-position next summer long-term.
And then he needs to want to come as well, we reportedly met his release clause last summer and he said no.
Even two year ago, Godin lacked the pace for the PL game and really dont see him leaving Atletico midseason after signing an extension last summer

quick fix: alder or maguire

Long term: koulibaily, skriniar, deLight, ake

Ideally we get 2 of the above and keep lindelof and bailly as backups

Maguire would cost a fortune and I'm not sure he'd 'fix' anything

This kid is a total gem

The problem here is how much Spurs are relying on him. If they'd been phasing him out and using mostly Vertonghen and Sanchez there would have been a real chance of it happening, but instead Alderweireld has been their man man. Can't see them selling him for anything but a stupidly overpriced bid.

I'd be surprised if Spurs sell him mid-season, or not unless any January offer is for a lot more than £25m.

Beyond that, Foyth and Sanchez are the long-term future CBs for Spurs, so with Vertonghen to help them along I don't imagine Spurs will regret Toby's departure all that much in the summer if he won't sign a new contract.

Vertonghen is a bit older so that may narrow the transition window

We don't need a central defender. We already have 5. It's not the defenders fault we are allowing so many goals. It's the system. You can only sit back and not put any pressure on an attacker for so long before they are going to eventually score. Change the system and we will start scoring more and conceding less...

This just in...playing a low block makes it more difficult for defenders, not a high line with high risk passes and constant 1v1s but a parked bus. You live in opposite land.

Eventually when we dont sign any of the better quality (and of course more expensive)players, and end up with a cheaper and less proven talent, some will claim that the lesser player was Mourinho's prime target all the while.

Not when you sit back and just let them pass the ball around without putting any pressure. Have you watched us play???

I like Vida the Croatian CB, I would imagine he wouldn't cost that much and he'd jump at the chance to play for a club of our stature.

If you bought him an this Koubaliy character constantly mentioned I think they would be a huge upgrade on what we have already.

I like Nathan Ake as a good young left footed, left sided centre back who is decent on the ball and in the air. Wouldn't cost a fortune either.

Alderweireld would be a good senior partner for him too in the shorter term.

This is from someone who has a season ticket at Dynamo Kyiv, where Vida was/is a cult hero. But just no: please no, no, no) He makes Smalling look like Messi ffs)

I've only seen a limited amount of games and he's always impressed me. Fair enough I take your opinion as you've clearly seen more than I have.

No worries, I love Vida, all Dynamo-fans do. But he is as quick as Matic and as technical as a hungover Smalling. He gets stuck in though; thats for sure.

United peoples T.V have SerieA football expert Francesco Porzio to run the rule on Milan Skriniar, Nikola Milenkovic, and Joachim Andersen, regarding their suitability in joining us. What's interesting is that he believes we should move for Milenkovic if it was his choice due to Milenkovic having the bigger potential out of the 3.

I'm glad he agrees with me..;)

Very sensible this guy... Re Skriniar, Inter won't sell. Skriniar has a contract until 2022, so there's no rush to renew.

Why? Is it not pretty obvious that Smalling is Mourinho´s number one CB?
First, Smalling is similar in style to Godin. Just a worse player. A Godin would be better suited to playing alongside Lindeloff or even Bailly.

Second, the whole reason JM wanted to get a new CB was to upgrade the EXPERIENCED ones. So I fail to see how a Smalling keeps his place if JM can land a Godin.

This Arse-Spurs game again showing there are no unicorn CB's who don't make mistakes.

Matic at CB should work in theory, he’s way to slow for midfield at the moment. I bet you it doesn’t work in practice though and he has an awful game.

why should it work in theory. he's slow, poor in the air, not aggressive in the tackle and doesnt track runners. all he has is he is decent on the ball compared to the other options we have

Because it’s a more forgiving position for slower players, he’s tall and he can pass the ball (or at least should be able to pass the ball) better than our other options.

I agree with the rest though

Why not call back Tuanzebe first?I remember everything good Mourinho was saying about Tuanzebe the day he took over. Some players you need only few minutes or seconds to see the talent. It will be hard for United to win ch.league to get ch.league spot next season. And with current cbs options. i believe and think United can do quite well in premier league to end of season. Second last season and with Lindelof adding. And i dont why he Mourinho is complaining. Matic start the season late because of injury. So give Tuanzebe a chance as a CB, before rate him as not good enough for United.

And Bailly back to his best, should be like a new buy. How often has Bailly played this season?Bailly and Smalling should be good enough for top 4, from the start of the season. United Cbs are not so worst.

Look at Pavards assist the other day.

We don’t have a CB who could dream of hitting that sort of pass.

I’d break the bank and go for De Ligt. This season is a waste anyway, get him in January and settled.

Its not really. He was slow to close down at the weekend for example and the ball was in the back of the net. If someone runs away from him in midfield theres a defense and goalkeeper to bail him out. If someone runs away from him at CB its just the keeper
