Celebrity Allegations, #MeToo etc

Bit of a random contribution but I went on a tour of New Zealand on a bus in 1999. There was an English girl on that same bus who was travelling back to the Uk from the states having spent 6 months working as an assistant for Harvey Weinstein. She said she quit her job once she realised he was "an absolute pig of a man". Kind of wish I'd probed for more details. I just assumed he'd been rude to her. So there you go. That's a hell of a long time he's spent being nasty to women. What a cnut.

Interesting.

Your Erdos Number with respect to Harvey Weinstein is 2. I reckon you're a bit dodgy, Pogue.

Hollywood must be drowning in the sweat of panicking executives and creatives right now. You can almost smell the fear in some of those statements.

Probably for the best to get it all finally out in the open. Despite it's liberal roots, Hollywood still run by old white men with minorities and women not getting much a look in from a creative perspective.

I think Delevigne when talking about associates of Weinstein, it's the male creatives, a large proportion who are still being quite quiet as things stand.

The truth is that this kind of abuse of power has been going on in Hollywood since the beginning of the big screen cinema and it's no secret. Woman AND men. Whether it was James Dean or Marlyn Monroe sucking off movie moguls in the 50's. That obese lump of shit Weinstein is just the tiny tip of a gigantic ice berg.

Even whilst being accused of trying to cover up for a sexual predator, Matt Damon can rely on Ben Affleck to seem like more of a douchebag. What a bro.

Ben Affleck himself apologizing after condemning Weinstein first.

Sorry to be naïve here, but what is going on with these tweets? Obviously the Harvey Weinstein one I understand...but the other one...

Another Affleck video has surfaced:

Best not to stop spreading misleading videos like that.

"This was for the camera," she said. "You have to understand that we have done dozens and dozens of interviews like that. It was for a show I was producing, so I was not at all a victim. When the cameras rolled, we would start to do that game. As soon as it stopped rolling, there was none of that. He never touched me in any improper way. He was very respectful, I must say."

As for Meryl Streep, I have no fecking clue who she is, but I do find the stuff I've read about her to be dodgy as hell in comparison to her now trying to wash her hands, whether they were dirty or not.

You are kidding, right?

Too many tweets, to post in here, but check Terry Crews' twitter timeline.

Associates of Weinstein, the female actors yet to speak up, are obviously the ones Delevigne is referencing here when Weinstein said he's slept with loads of stars and made them what they are.

I wonder will there be any backlash against these women when this scandal is all said and done. Will they be ostracised within the industry?

I'm not sure why there would be they were either victims or they could have freely slept with him for the trade off but thats their choice, they're allowed.

I wonder how exposed the studios are as it sounds like they all knew and let it happen.

Not sure why anyone is even remotely surprised that casting couch exists in Hollywood, its the most popular theme in porn.

For every woman that declined Weinstein there were probably 20 others who either willingly submitted to him or otherwise even seduced him. Obviously that emboldens him and when you feel like Michael Jordan you shoot every time you get the ball even with two defenders in your face.

The more disgusting people are the assistants and executives that enabled him and covered it up.

Isn't it strange that absolutely every scandal these days has to be spun one way or another depending on your politics? I'm sure that didn't happen in the past. The obvious response to a big story like this is "How awful. What a vile man. Glad he's been caught. What a horrible abuse of power. " And that's about it. But no, we're living in an age where everyone is constantly looking for some form of political capital. Because this happened in Hollywood, an industry with a reputation for being (spit) liberal, then the right wing attack dogs are out in force looking for a way to spin this and create a whole load more villains in the piece Hence this thread has posts accusing all and sundry of being hypocrites and even going as far as insulting the victims in this sorry saga (which really is scraping the fecking barrel) And why? Because they dare to have different politics to them. It's tawdry as feck.

There are also monumental double standards on display. For all that this prick was enabled by people who were in thrall to his power, the moment that incontrovertible evidence came out (the New Yorker recording) Hollywood rounded on him pretty quickly and he is rightfully being hung out to dry. His career is pretty much finished. Conversely, we recently uncovered a similarly upsetting piece of audio footage of another powerful, physically repellent, overweight, aged white man boasting about "grabbing them by the pussy" having previously been accused of marital rape in a biography and what happened to him? He was elected the president of the fecking USA!

I've been looking for some posts by our resident right wingers in the Trump thread full of righteous indignation about this appalling cover-up and enabling of a sexual predator but I'm afraid I can't find any. Perhaps @Buchan and @Will Absolute can point me in the direction of some of their posts that I might have missed?

These 3 paragraphs have so perfectly encapsulated my thoughts on the matter. It is so accurate. The bit about politicising especially.

The victim blaming is truly disgusting and one of the most disappointing things about this thread. Appalling stuff.

Already rich man in no danger doesn't want to be ostracised so lets someone get away with it. Sorry, but he let other people potentially be in danger, knowing that if that guy did it to him, he probably does worse to women.
It's easy to say they're not to be blamed because that is usually the case, and people are approaching this as if it's regular life with regular people who need a job, but this is different, and they fecking are.

Interesting points. Comparing the two situations when they both came to light, the difference in how they were handled is that the “liberal” accused had his behaviour condemned and has been rejected from his society while the “conservative” accused’s behaviour, if not condoned, was brushed under the carpet. That’s where the real hypocrisy lies.

Take a bow.

Some in this thread seem to be wanting to politicise / blame victims here or claim that men are no longer allowed to approach women.

There is a world of difference between someone misreading some signals and approaching someone for a kiss that then is blocked / not wanted and what Weinstein is accused of and what we can hear in that harrowing audio.

A bit of alcohol / heady atmosphere can make anyone misjudge a situation, but a rational response to it being rejected is to apologise and move away - not carry on insisting, applying physical or mental pressure to try and coerce the person to your point of view.

That approach is seriously messed up but it actually gets enforced by some TV / Hollywood BS where the "hero" is "persistant" and wins over the woman. It seems some can't differentiate between persistence and harassment so maybe we need better male role models than we had before rather than blaming the women in these situations.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but my rational response to that situation is to retreat, go bright red, mumble an apology about a dozen times using something vaguely resembling words and then go out of my way to avoid the female in question for as long as possible, preferably forever.

You are kidding, right?
No. I've seen her in pictures and seen videos of her speaking to a room of people on a (or multiple) awards show, but I have no further clue who she is. She doesn't interest me.

Well said. The second paragraph...you don't know whether to laugh or cry.

While I personally agree with your post entirely, isn't your last sentence just further confirmation of your first?

Its incredible just how powerful white and rich people are in Western countries so much so that actresses like Jolie and Paltrow don't speak out against them for the fear of repurcusions.

To my knowledge both Jolie and Paltrow are white and rich.

Weinstein isn't just any white, rich dude. He's been widely considered the most powerful man in Hollywood for decades. Careers have ended because people have gone against him.

Genuinely curious, who's career has ended because of Weinstein?

Troy Duffy springs to mind. Weinstein pretty much had him blacklisted, and he's gone nowhere since (though he was such a massive twat he deserved it and brought it on himself, but it does speak to Weinstein's power).

"So, apart from the physical intimidation, the career-suicide, the character-assassination in the industry and the media, the dredging of personal and sexual histories, the adverse effect on others' livelihoods, the unequal financial resources when it comes to legal representation, the whispering campaigns about 'troublemakers', and the predictable assault on their credibility...why do these women hesitate to speak out? They've only themselves to blame, y'know."

"And then there's the convenient cultural tradition of these women being deemed hysterical and - Jehovah forbid! - opinionated!"

"Shut up, Judith, and put the kettle on. There's a good girl. Nice arse, by the way."

Heather Graham comes to mind. Apparently she denied his advances, last I heard she was doing B grade tv shows and computer game voices.

No way to prove this has anything to do with Weinstein of course but at one point she was quiete a popular actress.

Thanks for this. I'd never heard of him but now I'm fascinated by him. Overnight has gone on my "to watch" list.
