Casemiro | United Player

Ironically this is the type of signing that might have kept Ole in the job and possibly won him a trophy.

have no clue how he fits ten hags vision though. Did he pair FDJ with a ball winner at Ajax?

60 million on a 30 year old. Hard to believe this is the best that the brains trust at United could come up with. Real are quite happy to punt him out the door for this kind of silly money, knowing full well it's in a normal club's interest to shift aging players for huge money. We shouldn't be operating like this, we should have had 4-5 solid upcoming names of the right profile earlier in the summer instead of pissing around then panicking on aging legs.

Oh well, I guess it's time to pray that he adjusts to the PL very quickly.
He's not ageing. Their plan was to bring in their new DMs over the next couple of seasons before getting rid of him. And even then he wouldn't be over the hill. They're a practical side though and like to transition players before they come close to the end of their worth. It's worth noting that this time next month his midfield partner will be seven years older than him and everyone still raves about him (and they also rave about Casemiro, funnily enough).

But we've come in with an offer than they won't get in two/three years time. They feel they have the depth to cover losing him. And they do, because they're Real Madrid.

And again I'm seeing someone say "we should have bought x,y,z who's up and coming" is that so we can play them in the conference league next year if we're really lucky?! Because we need world class talent right now and guess what Casemiro is.....?

I know we're shit right now and it's difficult to believe that we're actually getting a world class player, but we are. He's amazing. He's exactly what we need. We're getting him because the Glazers are scared as feck right now. Embrace it.

The Glazers can still feck off, though. We need more than one amazing midfielder.

This is not planned. ETH spent all summer trying to sign FDJ. Now we're signing a completely different profile in Casemiro. I wanted both a sitter and controller, but ETH seemed adamant in signing a controller. Hopefully he can still make this work, but I disagree that this is planned.

If we were signing both, that would be pretty unreal.

Yea, though I’m not saying it is planned, rather that it looks planned - or maybe I should say looks like a plan.

De Jong, whom obviously Ten Hag knows, would never be matched with a DM ‘sitter’, but rather with a box to box with the capacity of knowing when to sit (like Lasse Schöne), as De Jong worked as a roaming deep lying playmaker. I could understand if in Ten Hag’s eyes, either of Fred, McT and Rabiot could be moulded to the Schöne role, but we know all too well that Fred and McT both have defensive tenacity but lack defensive awareness, and Rabiot, well, his agent is not like Casemiro’s mum.

If we got De Jong, I’m guessing Ten Hag would have wanted someone less expensive in with that combo (b-2-b capacity and defensive awareness). But having gotten Eriksen, and De Jong looking like a wild goose, suddenly we are one player away from using Eriksen as a DLP, and Fred or Bruno as a b-2-b or Bruno or VdB as a 10. Getting a De Jong B version instead, we would have to drop one of Eriksen/Bruno, and buy a cheapish Schöne clone to play with a second rate De Jong type. Better then to have a class A anchor/enforcer and get the best out of Eriksen/Bruno/Fred at the same time, no?

Matic was after Schneiderlin, Fred after Matic (if you count Fred as a DM).

I'll barge in and say I'm one of those who don't. Fred for me is a clear 8/CM. The embedded tweet below summarises it well.

Casemiro as a 6/DM + Fred + another 8/CM in a three-man-midfield would be a really good midfield, perhaps excellent. Depends on the second 8/CM.

Salah’s 30, KdB‘s 31.

Totally agree.

A very good short term signing. Might even get us a top 4 so Ten Hag can have some stability the next season. If FDJ comes, as well, we'll suddenly have a very good midfield.

Agreed. They paid 80m+ for a midfielder who plays the same position.

They obviously need to justify that by playing their new signing, hence the ease of the transfer.

Age has nothing to do with it as modric and Kroos are still going strong and probably will be difficult to unlodge from the team by Camavinga and co.

You don't give a Ferrari to a 19 year old who just passed his driver's licence. You give it to an F1 racer though..

You cannot do much better for a panic buy, so congrats and good luck!

I forgot that Kroos is also older as well. We're buying the youngest of the midfield three who just won the Champions League (in a game where everyone on here was talking about how amazing that midfield three are) and the big complaint is that he's too old  this fecking place, man...

An absolutely typical Glazer signing. Sign a 30 and above year old player. Great player but did the same with Ronaldo, Ibrahomovic, Falacao, Cavani etc. While Real Madrid have Tchoumci and camavinga who are both under 25. And the thing is Casemerio probably has 2 to 3 years left then we have to buy another midfielder. Wouldn't suprise me if McFred are back in the starting lineup then.

Another one to join the ronaldo camp ? How long before ronaldo does a coup and becomes the player-manager ?

I'm impressed how people are twisting the criticisms of this signing and completely ignoring the context.

So of the Premier League midfielders "old man" Casemiro is younger than:

Kevin De Bruyne
Kanté
Thiago
Jorginho
Gundogan

How dare you write the retirement list of the PL, blasphemy. These players wont be here next year due to aching bones.

I swear, in a few years' time, 28 will be nearing retirement age for footballers.

I don't understand what we're doing.

The team lacks a metronome player in midfield still, so we go from De Jong to Casemiro?

Does our board have a plan?

He's a great player, but our approach seems so scattergun.

Id sign a 36 year old if it meant that we never play mctominay and Fred again.

We desperately need to change our midfield.

if we sign casemiro, hopefully we get FDJ too and never have to field mcfred again.

I wonder how many posts over last few years have said ”why haven’t we bought a Def Mid?” or “… can he play Def Mid? l.o.l. :)“?

Now we might buy Casemiro and there’s an issue because he’s not mid 20s….
You'd think for a midfield general role, and one that relies on anticipating where the opponent is going to be/pass rather than raw speed, you'd want someone who is in that age sweet spot where they're highly experienced and highly athletic rather than a kid who's still relatively dumb as feck but like a puppy on pure cut speed.

I'm certain that we've become so used to being fecked over that one of us could win the Euromillions and still fall into depression thinking about how much effort it'll take to call the number to claim the winnings.

Waking up tomorrow knowing we get the "HERE WE GO" tweet for a top DM.

What cracking news after the awful transfer saga thats been dragging on with their rivals. Cannot wait.

Casemiro is going to be playing in the Europa League anyway so I'm not entirely sure where you were going with that point on the conference. I don't see that he makes us any more likely for CL football than spending our money on younger players that we'd scouted and identified through proper process.

He's 30 years old, of course he's aging. Saying he isn't doesn't change the fact that he is. Players age differently, yes, but he could enter a decline at any point over the next few seasons. We might get lucky, we might not - the point is we're making huge concessions to get this world class player. Real know that, that's why he's not indispensable, they have the next generation coming through because they know what they're doing. They wouldn't be making this decision if he was younger, that is clear as day so they clearly don't think age is unimportant.

That shows the difference between a succession plan, and a club bungling things with totally random acquisitions that sound good and repeating the same mistakes. We should have been building a squad from the ground up and accepting a bit of growing pain if necessary, instead we're parachuting this guy in. It's like groundhog day, we've done this dance with Real last summer without great success.

That’s the spirit!
