The reason Fernandes was so good was because of the quality he was replacing - Lingard and Pereira were so bad that season. I reckon the same thing will happen here - the gap between Casemiro and McTominay is so great that the whole team will get a boost.
Brilliant signing. I'm amazed that there are people turning up their nose at the lynchpin of a side that won 5 CL and 3 La Ligas because he's 30. McTominay to Casemiro is literally the biggest upgrade I have ever seen. No exaggeration. I challenge anyone to think of a better replacement in a top team's starting line-up.
My only worry would be if he's moving purely for the money. But even then, he's such a professional that I think he'd be elite even as a mercenary. He looks like he has a great deal of professional pride.

Very exciting signing, long overdue. Will make as big a difference to our chances this season as just about any other player I can think of. The guy is a rock solid DM.
All that being said, let's not allow the (hopefully) flurry of signings distract us from the real goal - Glazers Out. Liverpool needs to be a massive show of disdain for these leeches.

This is not planned. ETH spent all summer trying to sign FDJ. Now we're signing a completely different profile in Casemiro. I wanted both a sitter and controller, but ETH seemed adamant in signing a controller. Hopefully he can still make this work, but I disagree that this is planned.
If we were signing both, that would be pretty unreal.
I get the concerns about signing a 30 year old, and to some degree I share them. I thought the plan was to build a team in Ten Hag's image, and that seemed like something that might be done with younger players. But ultimately after the appalling first two games, and with the poor quality of the midfield, I find it hard to argue against a guy that's heralded as amongst the best in what he does. But then that's what I thought we were getting with Varane as well.
Time will tell, but the Utd midfield is so poor, I can't see how this can be anything other than an improvement.

I wonder what the Real Madrid fans here think about this. The sense I have got from the ones I know outside here is that he is a leader but that on the pitch he is waning a bit. Quality in terms of defensive nous but not great in terms of buildup

I think we'll see Eriksen and Casemiro as a midfield 2 a lot, a destroyer and a dictator. Fred as a third choice is a lot better than a starting player in my opinion.

Yea the plan to build a team in the managers image is clearly out the window. They should still be held accountable for chasing a single player all summer and failing to get the deal done.
But whilst neither age or style of play is ideal, they have signed a damn good player. It just feels like we have gone back to signing avaliable big name players rather than the ideal components of a long term team.

Fred looks half decent in that more advance role. He has the lungs to run for days and a pretty decent short passing game. He also never goes into hiding like Pogba. We are too soft letting the smarter clubs get the up and coming players who they then use to win everything in their peak and then sell for a profit to clubs like us with no vision and rinse and repeat. That’s a smart successful win at all cost club vs a rudderless mess. You really think they’d let the player go if they felt like they hadn’t already got the best out of him? Varane being another major case in point. Sanchez. Greizman would have been another major bust and so on. There are many improving players who would instantly get into our team and make us play better. 1/3 of the wages, yet to reach their peak, with major resale value at some point. We never find these young players who are about to be a really big hit anymore and that was always the core identity of the club. Our scouting was cutting edge. We’ve gone down the tubes since we started blindly bringing in world star brand names late in their careers

60 million on a 30 year old. Hard to believe this is the best that the brains trust at United could come up with. Real are quite happy to punt him out the door for this kind of silly money, knowing full well it's in a normal club's interest to shift aging players for huge money. We shouldn't be operating like this, we should have had 4-5 solid upcoming names of the right profile earlier in the summer instead of pissing around then panicking on aging legs.

Was reading this thread the other day at 8 pages long and thinking no way this is gonna happen and now look at it… really excited to see this happen even if he only has 2-3 years at the very top that would still be far, far better than any other option out there that is available now.
