Cardiff City vs. Manchester United

How people can drop Jones after his last performance I don't know.

Because Arsenal are (at the moment) a better team than us, and Cardiff are not. Jones was the right choice against Arsenal, but probably isn't against Cardiff.

In midfield, that is. I'd want him to start at CB if Vidic isn't fit, although I expect he will be.

He's more a destroyer, unless you want to play him at centreback I wouldn't put him in the team. We need players who are going to create and open them up.

I understand what you're saying but I'd still start him in midfield for this, alongside Carrick. Jones doesn't have to be limited to appearances against Real Madrid or Arsenal in MF. We struggle in the engine room against alot of sides.

This is a tricky game, City's midfield found it hard enough. Jones can be more than a destroyer, he can allow us to control the game.. Like Fletcher in a way. He'll end up as a centre back no doubt but for now, short term, play him alongside Carrick in any tricky games where the opposition is going to get in your face and press us like crazy. That's what Cardiff will do. Medel etc will be all over us.

I agree about your last point but the big problem is that we don't have creative midfielders. Cleverley and Fellaini aren't creative at all, Ando is but he gives a good performance every three poor ones and Giggs is a bit old. So while I don't like to see Jones play there often, at the moment he might be the best choice in tough choice.

Indeed. And perhaps with Jones doing defensive work it will allow Carrick some more freedom to go forward or at least try some more creative, forward passing. He can take on more responsibility attacking-wise if he has less to worry about behind him. When we blew Fulham away in the 1st 45 minutes, Jones played in midfield then. Cleverley had the more attacking role.

I'm not suggesting we play Jones in midfield against weaker teams at Old Trafford, but away to potential banana skins like Cardiff (ask Yaya and Fernandinho) he could play a big role for us.

I'd prob go with

-----------------De Gea
Rafael----Smalling--Vidic/Evans----Evra
-----------Carrick----Jones
Valencia/Nani---Rooney---Kagawa/Januzaj
------------------RvP

Looks solid at the back, tough in midfield with plenty going forward.

we proved Arsenal are not a better team than us. We just needed to find our self belief and trust in the manager...which we did.

We will dominate possession vs Cardiff. They're an organised team but they are not a team that will better us in possession which is why I'd rather start our other CM's. I would play Jones at CB, well only if Vidic doesn't make it. I'd probably start Fellaini or Giggs here (yes Giggs). I think Giggs will be up for it.

just through being Welsh?

Yeah ok, that stuff is up for debate. But the general point stands. Arsenal and Cardiff remain very different challenges.

So when was the last time we played Cardiff in a league match? Was in in the old 2nd Division. I seem to recall a trip to Ninian Park once but my memory may be playing tricks on me again.

Match thread record:

I'd say you should hold this job of creating match threads for life.

Marshall has actually been their best player this season

See, I don't think so.

He had a game v Spurs where he made a lot of saves. All were standard saves, but he got a lot of credit. This has fuelled this myth.

If you actually watch the games, he is dodgy as anything. Scandalous on crosses, poor feet movement, and not a great shot stopper. His attempts at the two Villa goals on Saturday just some examples.

He's better than you think. Earned them points against Everton and Norwich as well as being man of the match v Spuds. Villas first goal was a cracking free kick up and over the wall

I
I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. We need to making up ground, and we should be beating the likes of Cardiff, no matter when we play them.
Yes, we should, I never said we shouldn't. It's just that it's a tough place to go and if I was given the choice of a definite point or the risk of losing all 3, I would take the point given it's after a the break and we usually struggle then.

Of course I want a win and expect one, it's just I don't tthink it's as easy as people think.

Really? If someone offered you 1 point vs Cardiff now you'd accept? Our run of games probably means we need to get a result here otherwise we'll be back to where we were.

I would be disappointed with anything less than a point no matter who we play. I honestly think we turned the corner with that win. We have been steadily improving. The only thing lacking is goals...and we have been getting close. we should cane them.

There's always people that over worry. I can remember people saying they'd take a point away to Fulham too.

We'll twat Cardiff. :)

I agree. We surely can't be saying if someone offered a point for Cardiff away we'd take it? Never and definitely not now. Were gaining momentum let's slap them.

Agree with all that.

With Carrick out the only thing I hope for is that we do not simply replace him with Clev/Fellaini and pretend we can play the same style and game. Let Chica get game-time if we are 1-2 up.

Rafael------Jones------Evans------Evra
------------------Fellaini-----------------
Zaha---Kagawa--------Januzaj----Nani
------------------Rooney----------------

Hernandez has the play off against New Zealand, he has a crazy amount of travelling coming up, doubt he will be ready for this match.

don't think he's in the squad as the Mexico manager is playing players that play over there instead of European leagues
Ah ok, didn't hear about that. Good for us but seems a bit weird though for such an important match.

Carrick out for 4-6 weeks so gonna miss this, the Champions League, and Spurs too I would imagine. Big loss.

de Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra
Fellaini Cleverley
Valencia Rooney Januzaj
van Persie
--
Lindegaard; Smalling, Jones; Giggs, Kagawa, Nani; Hernandez

Smalling may get a start, Young and Welbeck may get in the squad. Can't see any other major changes though. If Welbeck is back, I'd fancy him to start in the Champions League on the left. Maybe something like this (probably wishful thinking):

vs. Leverkusen

de Gea
Rafael Evans Vidic Evra
Jones Cleverley
Kagawa
Valencia Rooney Welbeck

This is a must-win game. Don't really care if it's 1-0 or 9-0 (would prefer 1-0 though) so long as the performance is good and another three points are taken. No let-up now.

Wow, basically a 1 man midfield in Fellaini in terms of defense!

Providing there are no injuries, we should be looking at something like this?

De Gea
Rafa Evans Vidic Evra
Fellaini Cleverley
Nani Rooney Januzaj
Van Persie

I'd like that team. Any of Kagawa, Jones or Valencia could also start quite comfortably.
