Abolish himself? They say that like it’s a bad thing.

Jesus fecking christ, an absolutely seminal book on class distinction, racism, & high school life as seen through the lens of big time high school football is now banned in a county in Iowa. I couldn't recommend this book strongly enough to anyone, it's that good of a read (& it spawned a decent movie & an absolutely sublime television series)...

Love the book and movie. Not seen the tv show. What particularly got this banned? I don’t remember anything particularly contentious.

References of sexual behavior. As Bissinger says, they're fecking high school kids, of course they're gonna talk about sex!

I strongly urge you to watch the show, it is on par with the book & better than the movie.

I immediately became jealous of you due to you not having watched the show yet. I wish I could forget it all so as to rewatch with no knowledge of what it would be like.

Crikey. I can’t remember anything overly sexual from the book, may have to read it again. Surely kids have access to much worse than whatever is in the book via simple clicks on the internet?

If the show is on Netflix still I’ll check it out, good timing actually.

Poor woman. I mean what else can she do? The only two professions in America are acting and porn.
I love how it's "just speaking out about the vaccine" when what we all mean is you spread misinformation and "holistic" remedies for COVID in order to make money and or sow division during a time when we needed collective action.

Alas, she valued "calling out truth to power" rather than her career, curiously in an industry she hates (woke, liberal, Hollywood elitists)

Is it really that surprising that a septuagenarian who grew up, played and managed in a very old school blokey football environment has those old-fashioned views on the sport?

Keegan's probably getting himself into a spot of bother with this

I get the point to a degree. It grates when the likes of Jermaine Jenas and Danny Murphy lazily critique players playing at a level they couldn't dream of, this is little different. It's better to hear from somebody who has played at a similar level to the team they're commentating on. Might as well get Stephen Howson on otherwise.

I think the ability to discuss/analyse football can be distinct from the ability to play it. Lots of footballers who were fantastic players make terrible analysts. And you only need to look at Mourinho’s career to see how it’s possible to be a great analyst, without ever having played the game.

Of course, but if you're on the show because you're an ex player you should have played at a similar level. I wouldn't really want to see somebody from Tranmere Rovers commentating on the Champions League final, for example.

If you're there for your insightful analysis that's a different story, but when was the last time anybody like that was on a football show?

On the one hand, you might say he’s old, out of touch and irrelevant in the modern game. But you’d have to accept that the histrionics, the crying, the decisions made purely on emotion aren’t helpful at all in football. With that in mind, it’s a wonder he ever reached the level of English manager.

Ok, yeah. That’s the real problem here. The way telly goes with “names” over actual ability.

Getting back to female pundits, you won’t ever find anyone who’s played football at a level even close to top men’s football. Or even the men’s team at Tranmere Rovers. But we can’t use that as a reason to have male pundits only. Football is a massive growth sport for girls and it sends out a shitty message if they don’t see female pundits, as well as male. And if that means we stumble upon female pundits who are better at their job than, say, Jermaine Jenas (admittedly a low bar) that can only be a good thing.

That's dripping with casual 1980's sexism, so condescending. He's a typical out of touch old man.

I'd argue that old men like Keegan should be removed from football commentary because the game has evolved past their ability to analyse it anyway.

I love it when someone has a clearly bigoted opinion, feel uncomfortable about it because they know deep down that it's bigoted and then clutch at straws to justify said opinion. Typically they will go for a motte-and-bailey argument by hiding behind a statement that everyone can agree with, but in this case the motte is more of a treehouse.

Cheer up Kevin Keegan
Oh what can it mean
To a Scouse-Geordie bastard
And an individual who doesn't care if they offend or upset a group of people in society who have been treated differently because of their gender.

Well exactly. I feel like it's gone away mostly but the 'never a foul in my day' brigade who couldn't be bothered keeping up with the changes to the laws of the game would annoy the shit out of me.

Someone like John Giles as well, while a very good pundit, could have blind spots. He'd be incredulous when players/managers were talking about fatigue or players needing a rest as he never needed one. I've seen his old games and they strolled around. The pace/intensity of the game was nothing like it is now.

I’d be surprised if he thought anything else. It would be more shocking if he came out and said something progressive, which you’d imagine the paper would actually prefer since the Kevin Vegan headline is right there.

He's Spot on. There's nothing worse than listening to a woman do play by play. Nails on a chalk board. Always turn off the sound or find another way to listen.

But then againI I am just an out of touch old man.

Women shouldn't be on tv unless they're naked or cooking. Or both.
