Bundesliga 2017/18

Amongst the greatest fans in the world. Ask Arsenal.

Jonas Hector gave me goosebumps today. A german nationalplayer which could easily join a big Bundesliga side, maybe even Dortmund or Bayern, decided to stay in Cologne, extended his contract and goes to the 2. Bundesliga. This kind of romance has really become rare in this sport.
Some people will probably criticize him for that, but I won’t. I definitely have respect for players who feel that way about a club.

I respect Hector for that.

Will Germany still call him up (I presume he's going to the world cup). Who was the last Bundesliga 2 player they called?

The last question I cannot answer. But, yes, Löw will call him up for the World Cup. Arne Friedrich in WC 2010 was first choice central defender despite Berlin's relegation after that season.

I don't know if he's the last one, but Podolski in his early years is a player I can think of. I think it's likely Hector will be played until a clear successor is found.

If he’s quality, he’s quality, no matter the league his team is currently in. I mean... Chiellini, Buffon, Nedved, del Piero, Camoranesi, and Trezeguet were in Serie B for a year ;)

I’d say Löw is probably smart enough to know that though.

And there is no Cup - just qualification matches in the next season. If he plays well he will still be called. It is not a position were there really is a fight for places. But - Cologne has to go up into the first league in the following year again.

Really remarkable decision. However, wouldn't be so sure that it won't have negative consequences on his national career. Löw generally wants players who get regular game time at the highest level possible. Playing in the second division and clearly below is quality could negatively affect his form. Would probably be no real problem for an undisputed player but this is not really the case with Hector. Especially since his injury he didn't perform that well for Germany and got criticized relatively harshly from many fans (at least from my point of view).

Löw is somewhat infamous for holding on to players who performed well in the national team even when their club form struggles - see Podolski etc. I don't think Hector has anything to fear, and he might even have cleared his decision to stay at cologne with the mighty Yogi.

The last 2nd league player capped was Oliver Neuville, 2007/08 (with M'Gladbach in league 2). Before that, Poldi (also Köln, i see a pattern emerging) in 2004/05 and before that, Ferdi Keller 1860 Munich in 1975.

I don't see why Hector would lose his spot because he's going to play 2nd division next season. 2020 might be a different story though. Bild reported that Timo Horn is also going to stay, they even hinted at him forfeiting 2/3 of his 3m p.a. salary while they are down in the 2nd.

Doesn't Horn have a 5-mil buyout clause if Cologne get relegated?

I just saw that Lewa has 28 league goals and second best goalscorer has 14. that's ridiculous.

Hoffenheim - Hannnover

Gnabry with the assist to the 1:0 - and gets injured during that. He really matches to that Bayern squad...

Hoffenheim pulling out another miracle. It would be incredible to qualify to the Champions League again for them.

I know I've given Hoffenheim a bit of stick on here (tongue in cheek btw) but Nagelsmann really is the real deal. . . Isn't he?

Phenomenal that Hoffenheim are in a Champions League spot with two matches left for the second year running, especially considering the players they lost.

I wonder how Bayern fans feel about Kovac, who probably will lose tomorrow to Bayern. . leaving him with 1 point from 15 with Eintracht probably missing out entirely on Europe next season. Would they prefer Nagelsmann?

Gnabry already demonstrating that he could be a legit Robben replacement for us, second thigh injury within one season.

I think every Bayern supporter would prefer Nagelsmann over Kovac.

PS: Bayern will lose agains Frankfurt since they seem to be fielding their U19.

Has there ever been a team relegated with a positive GD? Darmstadt might do it in the 2.Bundesliga. :wenger:

Evina 17, Mai 18, Shabani 19, Dorsch 20

Bayern lending a helping hand to Frankfurt in the battle for EL/CL football, how lovely.

The whole 2nd division is bonkers this season. With 2-3 matches to go even the 7th placed team is still in danger of being relegated.

Dorsch scores, Wagner assists.

Gotta say, Wagner has been an excellent addition given his price and my low expectations.

Sam Neill being invited to the last game of Hamburg would be awesome. Taking off his glasses when HSV scores. #howtoadvertise
