Bundesliga 2017/18

Let me look that up first, I don't make a habit of listening to Stefan Effenberg.

It would be a league system similar to Belgium's.
I looked Effenberg's suggestion up and I hate it. In my opinion, if anything this mode would exacerbate and cement differences in footballing quality and financial power. Second half of the season surprises - horrible meltdown leading to relegation of an upper half of the table team or inspired sprint to the international spots or more for a lower table team - are eliminated.

Schalke take the lead against Hoffenheim by a header from Kehrer.

And Embolo makes it 2! Schalke are rampaging through Hoffenheim's defense.
VAR takes it back.

Cologne getting their stoppage time winner overturned by VAR. Looks like it's a correct call, but once again cruel cruel for Cologne.

Think after this weekend's results the bottom 2 is decided.

Koln have picked up but they just have too much to do now.

I know many of our German posters will shake their heads at me announcing Hamburg are down given all their escapes in recent years but they can hardly score a goal and much more quality down here this season.

Definitely not a home ref at the match of Schalke-Hoffenheim.

Yes please!

4th ref had to be subbed for the linesman now, seems to have done something to his ankle.

I'm actually amazed that there is even a plan in motion to make sure Bayern don't win everything so often.

What did Effenberg say?

EDIT: Okay just read them on google, pretty poor idea to say the least. If the league are serious about immediately breaking the Bayern monopoly on the league then they can remove the 50+1 rule to allow foreign investment. Other teams can then have access to money that previously only Bayern have managed to garner.

I ofcourse do not support removing that rule at all, it's one of the defining factors of the Bundesliga and what makes it unique to the rest of the major leagues.

Bayern might lose their dominance soon, they are benefiting from having arguably their greatest pool of players who would've dominated many leagues around Europe, let alone Germany. They have already lost some of the that pool in Schweinsteiger and Lahm, one of whom they have yet to adequately replace, and soon they will lose Robben and Ribery as well, two of their best attacking players during this period of dominance. Lewandowski, Boateng, Neuer and Hummels are also approaching 30 and will likely decline from here on.

Bayern have gone through spells of dominance before, but in order to continue that they will need to ensure the old guard is replaced adequately. Lahm seems to be replaced with Kimmich, Sule has been brought in to ensure they have a fantastic CB but it will be replacing Robbery that will be the toughest, and something I don't think they've done as of now (they make huge mistakes not bringing in Sane, De Bruyne).

Ofcourse, the clubs below them have to put up a challenge as well, Dortmund have struggled to replace their outgoing players and need some inspired signings, along with Reus staying fit to mount a challenge. Leverkusen need to ensure their young players develop into a group that can win the BL as well.

In my opinion, his plan wouldn't help with that one bit. It'll just narrow down the "competing" teams even further.

Bayern are ahead because they have a huge financial advantage and consistently very good management (something which most competitors lack). Changing the mode of the competition doesn't change that. It wouldn't treat the symptoms, even if Bayern might win less titles because the random factor is higher in playoffs.

The absolute state of the Gladbach v Dortmund match! You wonder how anyone can streak 2 ground passes in a row.

Reusssss! How did he get that in? Brilliant finish, dipped insanely in the end.

It's incredible how he continues to play at such a high level despite all his injuries. Such a sad tale of unfulfilled potential.

incredible techniqiue, real shame he's so injury prone. I personally think his injuries are one of the main reasons for Dortmund's poor form in recent years.

Definitely, he was the main man in attack when Gotze left but Dortmund couldn't depend on him because of him being out for so long. He's a top 10 in the world player when fit, he was in 2013/14, which was his last season without injuries.

Gotze, Reus, Schurrle looking really good together in the last few matches. Great signs obviously for Germany with regards to WC 2018, especially Gotze-Reus returning to form.

it's great to have imo and although unpopular can be extremely helpful for the sport. Gotta be optimized though, I don't like the freedom of the VAR atm. Needs a real system to make it more transparent and less prone for manipulation.

How is it prone to manipulations? In the traditional setup you "only" had to buy one ref, now you would have to buy two and video technology all but eliminates the benefit of the doubt on dodgy calls.

Frankfurt:Leipzig kickoff delayed by 6 minutes because Frankfurt fans have left their stand and taken position behind the goal while blowing whistles.

https://prnt.sc/ih06js

5 minutes in they have retreated to the stand but the constant whistle blowing continues.

What's the protest for?

Odd to have a Bundesliga game on Monday night.

2:1 for Frankfurt after 27 minutes.

Augustin gave Leipzig the lead - Chandler and Boateng then equalised and shot the 2:1

The monday matches. But actually they skipped one midweek match day for the 5 Monday matches in which mainly the Europacup teams will play.

Var neclected a penalty for Leipzig.

That's the second penalty given in Frankfurt this season to the visitors by the referee . . . but denied by VAR.

Great match this . . . A great advert for Monday night Bundesliga.

;)

Monday kickoff times which were introduced this season. Perhaps not the best idea to pick Frankfurt vs Leipzig for such a match, since the latter already get fans riled up plenty on their own and Frankfurt's fans (as Dortmund's) are known to be vocal about these issues.
Dortmund have the next monday match in a week and their fans are calling to leave the south stand empty.

I really don't understand why they don't give the reason for VAR intervention. Even the TV people had to guess for a minute or two why the penalty was even up for debate until they realized it wasn't the foul that was the problem, but an offside position beforehand.
So why not simply say/show "offside"/"handball"/"foul" when they reverse a call?

BL2 has its top game on Mondays.

When Frankfurt were in BL2 (2011-12 season) I arranged to head over to Frankfurt. Flights, hotel booked. Took a risk as match was not confirmed.
When it was. . . Yes you've guessed it. On a Monday. So missed it.

I'm not a huge fan of MNF anywhere really. Unfair on away fans in particular.

Protest whistles are coming in very handy for when RBL counter attack btw. . . Monday night football appears to be very staunchly opposed on the edge of the Frankfurt box it seems.

Do you really think the Südtribüne will be empty? NO WAY. Maybe a little less full but fans will still come.

It will surely come. Italy will introduce it on the big screens inside the stadia - and others will follow.

I think the ultras will try to make this point and that's the middle strip of the stand, some others will follow, some won't. It won't be empty, but I could see it only being half full.

Martin Schmidt resigned as Wolfsburg coach.

Wolfsburg pretty much the same as when he came in but let's be honest having a player like De Bruyne massively inflated their overall quality and they overachieved making CL in 2015.

It's not just de Bruyne.

Before Dieselgate they had this team:

Benaglio - Vieirinha, Dante, Naldo, R. Rodriguez - Gustavo Arnold - Schürrle, Kruse, Draxler - Dost and the finished eigth with it. It's just a plastic club in the middle of nowhere. I don't think anyone really wants to play there, they see it either as a stepping stone and/or go there for the money and it often shows on the pitch.

2nd half kick-off delayed because Frankfurt fans threw a couple of hundred Tennis balls onto the pitch. Apparently the club knew about this and prepared a clean up crew, but after they were done the fans threw a second wave and they had to start over. :D

Bundesliga football was played in mid week during the 90s - not too often, but it happened.
Also, the Cup games are in mid week, at times even at 6PM.
I, for one, am happy to watch so many individual games at different times. Don't see a problem. The club benefits financially & thus is able to attract/buy (bigger) players.

Sometimes I think those fans just want to protest for fun or for the sake of it. Get over it - it's the modern times: VAR, Monday night football - whether you like it or not. Go support the Amateure if you reall want to make a difference.

Do you remember? Dortmund once even had to play Glasgow in the UEFA Cup in 1999 - KO was at 4PM on a Tuesday. That was fun. Dortmund went through on penalties, we pupils were handed free tickets that day.

@Jaap

Most Frankfurt fans come from the area - and when I worked in Frankfurt they had often to play Mondays as that is the day for the top match in the 2nd Bundesliga and they played 2nd Bundesliga in a lot of that years... I guess Germans cannot be lucky if they cannot complain...

Instead of the usual 3 or 4 midweek match weeks the Bundesliga in this season only plays 2.

Clearly this protest is done by match going fans for match going fans, because for them these kick-off times have big impacts. The next monday match is Augsburg vs Dortmund for example, that's 6 hours by train - if there are no delays that is - which means they now have to take off two days from work, just to watch a regular Bundesliga match..

Cup matches are one thing, they have always been midweek and that can't be helped due to scheduling issues, but extending a weekend matchday to mondays is entirely different.
