Bundesliga 2016/17

Leverkusen should just retire.

You do know they play Champions League football practically every year, don't you? That's more that can be said of teams like United recently.

Furthermore, they're in the last sixteen of the CL this year.

Hardly as bad as you're making it out.

Lastly, you're an Arsenal fan, correct? If so, your point is extra laughable.

C'mon! We are bottlers, but Neverkusen are just something else. It's shame because they play good football.

Why did Bojan go on loan to Mainz from Stoke? Does that make sense in any way? It's really hard to imagine how this works financially considering the wages he has to be on at Stoke?

Mainz offers him more play time and they actually have a lot of Spaniards/South Americans in the squad, which probably helps him to settle in. They get a temporary fix for the vacancy which Malli left, so they don't have to overpay on a winter transfer. Stoke probably pays part of his salary anyway.
It's nothing breath taking but looks like a reasonable deal to me.

Yeah, looked into his appearances and just realised how rarely he played so far this season. I didn't notice that he has become an unimportant squad player over the last 10 months, so that explains it.

What's interesting now: We can perfectly evaluate the fascinating Bojan is still as good as Götze opinion @FCBarca brought up a while ago. Now that they play in the same league, the picture might become a bit clearer.

Probably tripled his salary. Nothing surprising about that.

Yeah, I really like Mainz and I think that withing their means they are doing a great job, but it's not like they are going anywhere, playing a bit of EL is the absolute optimum for them and even that's going to become increasingly hard now that there is a new top team in Leipzig and naturally more potent clubs like Frankfurt, Cologne, Hertha seem to have gotten their act together. Wolfsburg at least have the VW money going for them

On another note: could this finally be the year the clock stops ticking?

Looking at the bottm half of the table:

10 FC Schalke 04 18 6 3 9 21:20 1 21
11 1.FSV Mainz 05 17 6 3 8 26:30 -4 21
12 FC Augsburg 18 5 6 7 15:20 -5 21
13 Bor. M'gladbach 18 5 5 8 18:27 -9 20
14 VfL Wolfsburg 18 5 4 9 17:26 -9 19
15 Werder Bremen 18 4 4 10 22:38 -16 16
16 FC Ingolstadt 18 4 3 11 17:29 -12 15
17 Hamburger SV 18 3 4 11 15:35 -20 13
18 Darmstadt 98 18 2 3 13 12:36 -24 9

on the safer side:
Schalke might self destruct, but their head start and quality should be enoughto see them through.

Mainz look pretty stable.

Gladbach will have nothing to do with the relegation battle.

Wolfsburg still look like a functioning team to me, their quality will see them through.

Werder have a lot of fight in them and are used to the pressure of the relegation battle I also like their attack a lot - especially Junuzovic, Kruse, Gnabry and the old man - and they also have a bit of a head start since they already played Bayern.

less safe:

Augsburg seem well organized and functioning, they actually have a very good record under Baum (2-1-1 vs Gladbach, Dortmund, Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg), but I think their lack of attacking threat might cost them in the end, at least if the teams behind them find some form.

Ingolstadt are very similar to Augsburg, but closer to the edge.

Hamburg should be nowhere near relegation worries with their squad, but they still are, their home form is abyssmal, Gisdol is sitting on 1.07 ppg and for whatever reason they really love to feck themselves over by collecting red cards.

doomed:
Darmstadt are done, realeasing Ben Hatira took away their last bit of hope imho.

Weren't other clubs in England or Spain interested?
There are only 3 Spanish clubs who can match what Wolfsburg is offering in terms of wages and he's nowhere near good enough to play for them, not even as a squad player. No idea if any English clubs were interested. He's a good midtable player in my opinion but not much more. Don't think he'll stand out for a team regularly playing in the EL. He's also born in Germany and Wolfsburg had the money from the Draxler to PSG move to spend, so even English midtable clubs might have struggled to offer the same.

I'm really trying to suppress the hope for it to happen. It would be beautiful, but I'm fairly certain that escape it once again in some shitty dramatic way, playing truely awful football.

Bojan moving to Mainz. I thought only English mid-table teams can attract such amazing talent.

Dortmund this season is a team who needs to outscore their opponents if they want to win. Next week will be interesting with Leipzig coming to Dortmund.

The FIFA has suspended Hakan Calhanoglu for four months - CAS approved. That means he will be out for Bayer Leverkusen the rest of the season.

Reason is a failed transfer of him in 2011 to Trabzonspur. He already had made a contract with Trabzonspor but then made a new contract with Karlsruhe.

I believe it even was his dad setting up the contract with Trabzonspor. Not even sure he was aware.
It's shit for Neverkusen though, since it's not their fault. Why not make Calhanoglu pay a penalty to Trabzon?

That's an odd verdict. He was 17 back in 2011 and now, 6 years later, his new club is punished for a stupid deal that fell through back then? Sounds a bit wrong to me. Surely they could have found a better way to solve this issue.

I was just reading an article on the Calhanoglu ban. Completely mental punishment where no-one wins. Calhanoglu misses 15+ matches, Trabzon get nothing out of it, and Leverkusen get screwed even though they had nothing to do with the incident.

As mentioned above this could have been sorted out with Calhanoglu paying a reasonably big fine to Trabzon.

Aw, that's a shame about Calhanoglu. I like watching Leverkusen and he is one of the main reasons as to why.

 That was great, the passion he showed after scoring against his parent club and the fact that he's wearing the #9 shirt!

It took me a while until i was really sure that it was papadopoulos who scored. My stream doesn't have the best quality and i thought he can't be wearing the #9. I had to check my phone to confirm it.

Leverkusen remind me more and more what's wrong with the league atm. They are great when they can play their transition game against bigger opponents, but that's all they really are about, like so many sides they don't really seem to have the plan or finesse for a patient approach.
Which often leads to matches where both teams can do little more than disrupt and destroy each others build-up.
