How do I get this on Virgin Media TiVo?

ESPN was free the last few seasons, it's only right if they give XL subscription payers BT Sport for free too.

I think you are fecked, this was from BT a few days ago...
"Following the large number of enquiries from Virgin Media customers and press speculation, we can confirm that we have not agreed a wholesale deal for BT Sport with Virgin Media. But we are open to doing it at the right price and talks continue. In the meantime, we have an excellent offer for Virgin customers who move to either BT TV or to satellite."

That's great news. After having ESPN for free for the last 5/6 seasons I was only going to keep my TV package if I got BT for free and they've delivered.

It might only be 38 games a season, but it's definitely worth having the XL package over the L package, if you intend to have BT sport.

I don't have Sky Sports anymore as I found it a bit expensive, but took BT as I love baseball. So happy with it. Will watch the rugby as well. Quite like the Saturday morning show with Tim Lovejoy.

Are ESPN still showing some PL games?
In the UK? No.

In the UK you get ESPN as part of the BT Sport package. Looking at what's on it, it's mainly baseball, X games, Nascar, Aussie Rules and other "exotic" sports.

The PL games will all be on BT Sport 1 & 2.

But they should still have some FA Cup games.

FA Cup will be on BT Sport and BBC, unless BT have said they plan to use the ESPN UK channel for the FA Cup but as far as I know the ESPN channel is likely to be their least watched channel.

ESPN owned the rights for the FA Cup, have they transferred that over? See, I didn't think it was legal for BT to transfer the rights from ESPN to BT Sport, even though they now own both stations. If they can they obviously will though, but I haven't heard either way.

But I'm assuming it will be on ESPN until I see confirmation otherwise.

Ah youre right, as the new tv deal doesn't kick in until 2014.

It'll be interesting to see of people remember dusty old ESPN!

I think you're getting your ESPNs confused. What was ESPN UK (and had the cup rights) has ceased to exist and its rights passed over to BT Sport - effectvitely BT Sport is a rebadged ESPN UK.

The ESPN that still exists is just American ESPN, and won't be showing anything like football - just US sport.

ESPN exists. Will probably fade out during 2014 as the FA Cup rights expire. Seems the only real reason to have it with two BT Sport channels.

But ESPN is advertised as part of a 3 channel package. Only ESPN Classic has gone off.

I remember saying when it became apparent that BT were getting involved to try to win the Premier League rights they should team up with ESPN. ESPN being an American supergiant and a global name, BT a UK supergiant and household name.

BT ESPN 1, BT ESPN 2, BT ESPN America?

They could still have done everything they are doing now, but it wouldn't have split the football rights over another channel, and they'd have another party to share the cost. In the end they just ended up buying up ESPN in the UK.

Deep pockets.

Yes - but it's ESPN America, as I just said. The ESPN we used to have, which was the channel that showed the football, went off-line on 31st July.

I'm not getting anything confused, I jut haven't seen confirmation that BT have legally moved the FA Cup rights from ESPN to BT. Perhaps they have, but I'm not sure.

I've looked it up, and I'm still not sure: http://home.bt.com/news/btlife/bt-g...d-television-channels-business-11363802358061

BT Group and ESPN announced today that they have agreed that BT will acquire ESPN’s UK and Ireland TV channels business. These primarily comprise the ESPN and ESPN America channels and their live sports rights portfolio, including the FA Cup, Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League, UEFA Europa League, and the German Bundesliga.

The deal will enable BT Sport customers to see live coverage of the FA Cup for the 2013/14 season, the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League until the end of the 2016/17 season and the UEFA Europa League and German Bundesliga through to the end of the 2014/15 season. These join the broadcast rights that BT Sport has previously announced, including 38 live Barclays Premier League matches – including 18 of the top clashes – in each of the next three seasons (beginning August 2013); 69 live Aviva Premiership Rugby matches for the next four seasons; and up to 800 hours per season of live women’s tennis, including the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships.

See, what they don't say is "this will allow BT Sport to show FA Cup games on their channel". Instead they say "BT Sport customers will be able to see FA Cup games."

Has there been a BT Sport advert saying they will have FA Cup games yet?

I think I am right. From wikipedia:

ITV has 16 live matches including the final, where they have the first pick of every round. ESPN, part of the BT Sport package, has 25 live games including the final. Some FA Cup action will also be shown live on S4C but the channel will only show selected live coverage of Welsh clubs in the competition.

The FA Cup will still be on ESPN this season.

Why would they not do? You think they've acquired the rights, but might not use them?

Virgin are getting it, no word on cost yet though.
Thank you for this, was going to call Virgin today to kick up a stink about them losing ESPN and having no replacement. Turns out they've reinstated ESPN and ESPNHD and I've got the BTsports channels now instead of ESPN classic and the other one that's gone, which I can't recall the name of.

No it won't. ESPN is an American channel with no interest in UK football.

For example, today they are showing Nascar followed by MLB.

They showed Paraguay v Germany last night and the game was previewed on BT Sport 1 at the samw time as the Brazil game. For example Hargreaves was in the BT studio talking about the games and then commentated on the feed on ESPN. Whilst ESPN is a seperate channel it seems clear there is some overlap.

They havent acquired the rights, they have acquired ESPN. Legally, that is two different things.

Now I am not for one second saying there won't be a mechanism to move the rights from one organisation to another, but it wouldn't be "easy" or "free". In the past, there have been reports of ESPN or BT selling a single game to someone like ITV or the BBC, but that has shot down. At the same time, Sky Sports are allowed to show their games on Pick TV (I presume they own that) so there is a mechanism somewhere.

ESPN definitely did not have the right to resell the FA Cup games. That I am sure of. They may have a legal obligation to show the games in a certain way, with a certain amount of advertising, with the same identity for the entirety of the contract.

Anyway, for whatever reason you can think of, I maintain that I am correct. The FA Cup games will be shown on ESPN (which is part of the BT package). I could be wrong, I'm not saying I'm not, but I think I'm right. We may even see the old "pitch-side table" being brought out, probably with John Barnes and company.

On 31 July, ESPN became part of BT Sport, which is free for BT broadband customers. As a BT Sport subscriber, you'll be able to watch ESPN for free on BT TV if you have Infinity, or via the BT Sport App or btsport.com if you're not in an Infinity area.

BT has bought the companies that own the ESPN and ESPN America channels in the UK and Republic of Ireland. This predominantly comprises the main live UK sports rights owned by ESPN, selected operational contracts and employees currently working in the operation and management of the channels.

We have not bought the ESPN Classic channel. ESPN is also keeping its digital businesses in the UK and Europe.

ESPN is not going off the air. From 1 August 2013, an ESPN-branded channel continues under BT stewardship, bundled with BT Sport.

Thanks CMP, I think that clears things up a bit.

I also got this from a newb

Hi,

I'm a newb sadly, but I was reading the FA Cup thread, and saw you contributing. For the 2013/14 season, I think you're right in saying that the games wont be on the BT Sport channels. However, from the 2014 season, BT will have FA Cup matches on their actual channels, as they recently reached a joint deal with the BBC over the FA Cup rights from next season (No coverage on ITV yay!), meaning they will be available to the likes of Virgin Media viewers from next season.

Having said that, I think there is still confusion over this coming season, and I would not be surprised to see some games on the actual BT sport channels, as they may be able to reach some kind of agreement with the FA over the issue of ESPN...

Hope that help's somewhat!

Cheers.

To be fair, looknig into it some more, there is some confusion about this. But branding such as the above graphic certainly suggests it will be on BT Sport, and I see no reason it wouldn't be.

BT would definitely want it on their lead channel, as they are purely marketing ESPN as an add on for minority interest stuff. And I can't see the FA trying to play silly-buggers, given that BT have FA cup rights for the next five years... what would they gain by trying to stop BT building up the brand?

Yep. UFC 163 was on BT sport a couple of weeks ago. They've also had replays of it at reasonable times (something ESPN didn't do).

The Sonnen fight is on ESPN this weekend I think - along with all the build up and prelim fights.
