Madness if BT get exclusivity on the Champions League, just shows they mean business though and its a massive blow to Sky. Would love to have seen the main people at Sky's face when they realized BT had won the rights.

So with the PL rights and soon to be CL rights their spending is over the £2b mark isn't it....crazy.

Apparently part of the deal is that a share of the games will still be free to watch, I'm more concerned about the quality of their team than anything else.

fecking hell, the thought of Michael Owen commentating on CL football as well makes me cringe. They might have money to bid for rights but their coverage is simply terrible, near enough all the pundits and commentators need to be given the boot

So ITV won't have any games? Shit news. Some things should always remain on terrestrial TV. The World Cup, Wimbledon, Athletics and the fecking Champions League.

There's still the FA Cup.

The FA Cup is another good example of something that should always remain on the standard channels. Match of the day is another.

Football is ridiculous. Money money money. I'd love it if they ditched the CL and made it into the old European Cup again. The group stages are tedious, the same faces appearing every year in the knock-outs. Shit competition.

Oh wonderful. More chance for Steve McManaman to shout over everyone.

Remember the Palace game, where it cut to Macca in the studio DURING THE GAME in the 2nd half, so he could yell at Mark Hasley about a penalty awarded in the first half? The penalty that he shouted about all through halftime? Hilarious.

Good on them for going toe to toe with Sky, but the coverage is bollocks so far. Hargreaves, Owen and McManaman are just horrible speakers.

Well at least some matches will be shown free, including the final. Still annoying though.

Not just football, the fans are just as bad. Demand the best players and best football but all that comes at a cost.

Mixed views on this news. Gutted to see CL footie leaving itv but then it always had potentIal to happen once Sky robbed some of the package a bit back. Glad to see Sky lose some of its power though, they must absolutely hate this. Sky sports take everything so its nice to see someone chop them down with the edge of their hand.
BT sport is ok, if they can just get rid of Jake, Wornock, Mcmanamanamanaman begging lower teams to have a go at Old Trafford and the over use of Halsey a bit then all will be good. Don't get why people want to protect Sky Sports so much, they tried similar with Itv/bbc.

Statement from Sky, what doesn't make sense is the "If we thought it was worth more" line.

BT will be paying just over £333m a year for every game, this is something Sky and ITV are paying £400m for, if anything I would say BT have got themselves a good deal.
"We bid with a clear view of what the rights are worth to us. It seems BT chose to pay far in excess of our valuation"
"There are many ways in which we can invest in our service for customers"
"We take a disciplined approach and there is always a level at which we will choose to focus on something else.
"If we thought it was worth more, we'd have paid more."

EDIT: Sky and ITV are paying a combined total of £400m over three years whereas BT will be paying something close to £333m a year.

Ouch, that statement is a sign of sky losing power for sure.

I get both so I'm not too bothered, as long as I don't miss anything and coverage improves it will be grand

BT Sport have spent close to a billion quid on these rights, there's no way they won't go all out with the coverage and presentation.
Yeah, you don't spend a billion on the rights and then employ someone like Steven McManaman.

Until they get a decent commentary team my ongoing experiment with watching their coverage with the sound turned off will continue. Same with ITV. I do miss hearing the crowds but the benefits of not hearing the odious pricks those two channels employ outweighs that.

Will Sky still be showing any games then? Or have BT got rights to every CL game?

Terrible news really. Another kick in the teeth for the consumer. Let's not start on the pack of cnuts they call their punditry team. Their coverage has been embarrassing so far.

Warnock aside, I don't have a problem with their coverage. I don't think a lot of you lot would be happy unless it was a pro United panel.

When BBC took the F1 rights from ITV they introduced audio feeds on the red button, perfect when you have Jonathan Legard talking shit for two hours.

BT have "exclusive" rights.

Sky's coverage of the CL is simply the best around. BT will have to go some to top it. It's a ground breaking moment though.

It means we will have to pay through the nose for the top Prem games on SKY and through the nose for CL games on BT.

My dislike isn't anything to do with pro/anti United bias, it's to do with the fact the individuals are fecking garbage. Sky aren't immune from it, I despise Niall Quinn as an analyser and Caragher does my head in, but at least they are counter balanced by some decent pundits. The BT Sport group of McMannaman, Owen, Hargreaves and Warnock have nil redeeming features IMO. Then on ITV they inflict Andy fecking Townsend on us almost every match.

I would just love it if they gave you the option to turn the commentary off and just watch the match with the crowd noise.

I am disappointed that there isn't a PL game today on BT, but I actually prefer the Scottish football pundits and commentary. Don't mind Gary McAllister. The problem with the PL pundits is they don't have one personality between the lot of them. That's why I enjoy the European leagues coverage, especially on Sunday night with James Richardson.

They should go for the ultimate insult now and hire Gary Neville etc...imagine that.

Twats. They have shit punditry and commentary. They better pick up by then

So the Premier League are told they cannot sell their rights to one holder as it is anti-competition, so Sky had to relinquish its exclusive deal. Now BT buy the rights for ALL European matches in both competitions. Sky would be correct in probably feeling a bit pissed off at that.

Anyone who thinks BT Sport are going to be charging £8 when they're spending billions on football rights alone is living in cloud cuckoo land. The days of it being loose change a month or a freebie added onto Sky or Virgin Media packages are well and truly numbered. They'll be charging £20-£30 a month when they get into full swing, comparable to what the Sky Sports channels cost, without the additional channels you pay to get with Sky.

Same.

Sky have had over twenty years to perfect their punditry style. BT have just started, and TBH I subscribe just for the football. Plus their Sunday night show shits all over Sky.

What annoys me is BT will put the price up because of the increased number of games but Sky won't lower their price because of fewer games. Ultimately it'll mean that the consumer will pay more for the same thing they have now, and even then I can't see BT showing every game like Sky do and the coverage is poor.

It's got to the point now where I'd prefer miss games than pay any more.

This is my worry. I could be wrong, but it seems that a situation could arise whereby the majority of football fans in the UK are priced out of watching one of the biggest, if not now the biggest, football tournament on the planet.
