Bruno Martins Indi

Not sure how good he is, but I heard he's pretty so,I'd all around, and him being able to fill in at left back is surely better then buttner out there so there's a plus. We only have 3 center backs though currently who are all injury prone so it'd be an improvement.

Yep which makes me think it just could be lazy journalism and there's nothing in it. Rumour started from the MEN yesterday I think.

Right. Or he could be a genuine Van Gaal transfer target with a view to developing in the future?

I suppose yeah as he'd fit the bill with what you'd suspect van Gaal would want considering he's a left footed centre back and can play out from the back. The MEN have been shite with 'inside info' though for ages and considering that's where it originated I don't know if there's genuine interest there or not.

Did you say that too when we bought Vidic? Or Jones and Smalling?

Bruno Martins Indi is 22 years old, has been the best defender in the qualifiers for Holland and Benfica already went for him last transfer period. So I'd say he has potential and perfectly fits our tradition of signing young unknown centre halfs for a good price, if that's shopping at Aldi I'm fine with it.

Hey, Smalling was Maidstone's best player!

@Henrik Larsson I'm assuming you follow the Eredivisie. Did you see much of Vermijl this season?

He relegated and his team was so dire I didn't bother watching many of their matches. All in all he's done alright for them though, very difficult to judge players true potential when they're playing in the bottom of the league.

He's 22 now, and to use Büttner as a benchmark, Büttner showed more/was better than Vermijl at age 22, but he played in a better football team too.

So all in all, there are players in the 20-24 years of age category available for roughly 5-8 million pounds (which is peanuts for United) in all competitions over the world who are better than Vermijl at the moment. But maybe if he joins a better team, like FC Twente or a mid-table Belgium team he will improve, slowly developing as a player.

But I assume you want to know about his future at Manchester United: I would say it's big odds on that we don't see him ever coming back to United.

From what I have seen both Varella and Janko seem better long term prospects at right back

I agree. Haven't seen too much of them though. As for next season what would you say, spend 5 or 8 million on Darryl Janmaat (or someone in that price/category) or use Varella or perhaps Janko as a back-up right back?

Jorge Jesus, the Benfica manager, is a big fan of him. There were some rumours Benfica was going to make him a summer target.

I'd like to see Varela get a shot at being Rafael's back-up. He's really impressed me in the U21s this season.

That said he is still completely unproven at the top level, and if there was an fairly cheap alternative like Janmaat then I wouldn't complain.

Five centre half's will lead to further, criminal over-rotation. Four is enough, the existing players will stay fit due to the increased game time. I also subscribe to the belief that an experienced head to oversee the Smalling and Jones transition, while providing cover, is a better idea that signing some multi-million pound guaranteed starter. That depends upon the belief you have, though.

We have three right now and Jones will be used at right back and in midfield (doubt van Gaal will play Smalling at right back, it makes no sense). We need one at least but to make absolutely certain we don't have to play inexperienced youngsters or players out of position there next season we ought to sign two. It won't be the end of the world if we end up with one and that should probably be the case given that we have other expenses.

He is only 5'11?

You mean Bruno Martins Indi? Don't trust the stats on international websites. From what I can find in Dutch, he is 187 cm tall.

Same height as John Terry, Pepe and Vida are 188 cm, barely any difference. Don't know how much that is in foot+ inches. 6 foot 2 inches or something I guess?

Cannavaro was 5'9 (176cm) so it's much more about the timing and positioning than the height ...

Normally I'd welcome being linked with a guy like him, but especially in defense we need someone proven. But honestly I have no idea how good he already is.

Yep, from what Martins Indi has told in an interview, Benfica were very interested last winter. They made a cheeky bid, Feyenoord refused it, wanting a little more money, Martins Indi himself was open, but Benfica wanted to wait until the summer. Might turn out the wrong way for them though, with the World Cup coming up and him playing as a starter. But there's a big chance they will come and try again.

Wikipedia says 5'11. 187 cm is almost 6 foot 2.

No way he is 5'11. He's 6'1 or 6'2 then.

Puyol was what, only 178 cm or something? But I disagree about timing and positioning, obviously that's the most important aspect and height comes second or third. But except for Puyol and Cannavaro, 99% of al the top centre halves of the last 20 years were somewhere between 184 - 195 centimeters. So taller than average, but almost never taller than 195 and almost never shorter than 184.

Buy a back up right back and give the "inexperienced" centre half's the requisite game time, the time they have badly needed for a whole two years. I swear some people only see problems, the idea is to look for the solutions. And the solutions are there, just trust them.

I wholeheartedly agree. Everyone is quick to state that our cb's need experience and progression, but shun them away and say we need new ones as they're too young and rash. There's a bizarre need to stockpile from many fans, we don't need a crew of CB's, the ones we have need games. I really hope two of them really step up and assert themselves as the CB duo.
I honestly wouldn't be mad if we went into next season with Smalling/Evans/Jones/Keane as our CB's. Once we solidify that excuse of a central midfield we have, things will look a lot better, and we'll be able to form a partnership and potentials will hopefully be allowed to be met.

I want him. I admit to being silly by judging this on one game, but I'm just adding it to all of the good reviews I've heard of him.

Quality performance. Reminds me of Vidic somehow. Very good on the ball too.

Sign him up Gaaly.

Really strong performance tonight. Costa was made to look anonymous. Muscular mountain. I'm convinced.

He's 13 days older than Phil Jones, so still relatively young.

Started off poor, then ended up running shit. Worth a punt, I guess. Reminded me a bit of Jones.

Was decent, he's known as a good ball player and don't think we really saw that today. Used his physical strength well to see off a few bits of danger. But Vlaar was the main man at the back

At the moment I don't think he's any better than our 3 current centre back.

Sign him and play him with Jones. Opponents will be scary leaving their own pitch.

Seriously that look is really creepy.

Stick with our current CB or buy different one. Indi is still raw, and would be a waste of talent to sign him right now.
As a squad player? We need more than 3 centrebacks on our books.

I agree about playing the 3 we have, that's what I'd do. Pair 2 out of the 3 together and give them a run, but I wouldn't be against buying this guy (or someone like him, young, solid, strong, pretty quick, and with room to improve) as back up for the squad. He wouldn't be particularly expensive either.
