Bruno Fernandes | United not interested due to doubts over passing ability

I see the Lampard comparison but he also reminds me a lot of a young Scholes. He came into the first team as a #10 and was extremely attacking up until Keane left, then he dropped deeper. Some of the ways that Fernandes twists his body to turn away from defenders remind me of Scholes and also of course his fantastic shooting and creative passing.

Thank you mate! Appreciate it!

I love the fact that it means so much to you, it makes me happy  This is what football is all about, congrats.

I tried to watch the game (crappy river) and I wasn't too impressed, he doesn't look the level of player City would go after judging by that game anyway (I'm glad someone said it wasn't his best game). Even on his goal his touch bounced off his shin and was lucky not to fall at the centre half's feet. Still looked good enough for us though and did seem to work his socks off which is huge, especially for an attacker.

I’ve watched him closely in about 6 games in the last 2 months and I have to say I think he would struggle in the premier league.
He has a similar frame to Di Maria and doesn’t shield the ball particular well or keep it close to himself so I could see him getting pushed off the ball or dispossessed easily.
He isn’t particularly quick either.
He obviously does have a goal scoring touch and can create things when given space but his defensive work rate is average. He is also good at one touch lay offs and flicks. He is a number 10. We don’t really play with them, but if we were looking for that type of player, we would be much safer going for Felix in my opinion, who is 5 years younger, is stronger and quicker and can play on the wing as well as up front.
But it would be a mistake I think to sign him for a deeper midfield role.
I could see him (Fernandes) fitting in better at city where there’s a lot of movement and more one touch passing going on where his weaknesses wouldn’t be as exposed, but I wouldn’t be too worried if he went to them. He’s dangerous when given space in and around the box of course.

Is he defensive enough to play as an 8? Basically replacing Herrera.

Do you consider Fernandes a better attacking midfielder than Havertz?

Depends what you mean. He would be fine as an 8 at City or Madrid instead of someone like De Bruyne or Kroos. He works hard and presses very well. A midfield of him, Pogba and a top class DM would be great.

But United don't currently have a top class DM, we have Matic who is finished and Fred who is good but far from perfect. Which is why last season we always had to have another defensive player like Herrera (or sometimes Fred or McTominay) playing in midfield as well, to try and do a lot of Matic's work for him because he wasn't up to doing it alone. Fernandes would be completely wasted in that role, his best qualities are in his attacking which is the opposite of Herrera.

He was pretty average on this game by his standards or has been in the last few. The long season has been catching up on him and his stamina is pretty depleted, he struggled to accelerate like he usually does.

56 games and 4787mins is alot, specially for Portuguese league fitness levels.

Such a class player. Just the sort of quality we need in midfield.

You weren’t kidding about all the assists he should’ve had.

Do you think he could play in a midfield three with Pogba or would a diamond be best with him at the tip?

I think his all-around game is underrated.
He can for sure play in a midfield 3 because he has played there for most of this season but based on his attacking quality he would be more Letha in a diamond I think.

Also ya our attackers are quite shet he could have had more assist for sure!

Ya it wasn't his best game but if you saw the game we really didn't help his case either. We were shocking and thoroughly dominated for 85% of the game. What people need to understand as well is he had the season he had playing in a bad team that never was competing for the league. Imagine if he had been playing for Benfica.

Also thank you! It was a big win for us after all that happened. I don't know how I will act if we won the league I want to see that more then anything especially after all the years of hardship at Sporting. It would mean everything for me if I saw them lift the league title. Maybe one day I will!

So what's the general consensus among the resident Sporting fans? United or city bound?

His long passing is amazing. Pogba level I would say. Really like this player. We should sign him. If City and us don't go for him, I feel he'll end up at Wolves.

At City he's unquestionably got a much better chance of winning stuff over his contract. At United he's got far more chance of being a first team regular. Both clubs will pay him handsomely.

So he has to choose squad rotation player at City and most likely a lot of trophies or playing every game and the odd trophy here and there with us.

There’s a possibility that David Silva may be off this summer so he may get more playing time than anticipated if he goes to City. They will break him in ala Bernardo Silva

But hope he comes to United if Pogba is indeed looking out

This game was tricky: Porto was very cautious to cover the areas where he was and still he managed to get a goal. There were times where Porto would put 4 players arround Bruno Fernandes zone.

I’ve seen some people saying he hasn’t played as well in the last few games, and that would tie in with what I have seen. He looks too lightweight and doesn’t shield the ball or keep it close to him in possession. In a midfield 3 with pogba we would get dominated. I could see him struggling a bit like Fred for us. But if he signs will back him of course.
Good goal in the final in fairness though.

Can Bruno and Pogba play together? That’s my only question to spend big on Bruno. Pogba need to sit deep to let Bruno plays more offensive, similar role to World Cup. I doubt Pogba wouldn’t satisfy to play that role for whole season.

Of course he would be, he can also get forward from this position, just like Scholes used to.

We just need him to work back quickly into position if the attack breaks down, and our CDM and defence need to not crap themselves.

That compilation was impressive. Wasnt sold on him but that yt vid changed me mind. Looks class, very similar to Bernardo Silva. Him and Pogba both in the midfield would cause problems though.

Are you saying that City are cutting Kompany and possibly David Silva after winning two league titles in a row while we're handing out handsome new contracts to Young, Smalling, Jones and just awarded Young with captaincy?

Yup. Well more that kompany chose to go back to his former club.
Silva has allegedly got a massive offer from China so may or may not go.

Young imho should have not had a contract renewal. Jones should, he’s still sellable asset.
Smalling is still an important part of the squad so absolutely should get a new contract. I don’t see how that’s even up for question

You keep mentioning Benfica but did you realise Benfica was in 4th position behind Porto before Felix was introduced into the first team? Was it not the same Benfica's midfield that got flogged by Argentina u20 at the u20 world cup? Felix changed that team into a title winning team. Fact is they were nothing special without him.

I think we should sign him. Signing him means we have a proper No.10 for when we play the diamond formation. It also means we have a ready made replacement for Pogba in our 4-3-3 when he eventually leaves which should be after this season.

Its clear that the club's priority is Sancho but that's impossible this summer. Unless we can get a similar quality wide player this summer i think we scrap playing with wingers as our main formation. I'm happy to sign James to give us options and also use Greenwood there when we feel we need width.

If we can sort out our midfield, RB and get a good replacement for Lukaku, we could be a very dangerous team playing the diamond.

I've not seen him. How good is he technically, manipulating the ball, finding space, weight of passing, long and short?
If ges like Bernardo Silva, I'm happy.

He sounds like an excellent player, but from the sounds of it him and Pogba wouldn't work as we'd need a proper DM behind them - which we don't have.

Can't we just buy him, sell Pogba and invest the surplus into another midfielder? Makes so much sense.

Depends on the formation, a diamond with Pogba in midfield and Bruno at the tip could work. A 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 would be a very attacking line up that could be ideal to break down the weaker teams who are sitting back, against better quality teams it means that one can be rested and have an option on the bench to change things up if needed.

I suspect he is our Pogba replacement rather than partner, and if Pogba decides to stay or Real are too tight with their offer, then we won't sign this guy.
