Several circumstances that create a picture when combined.

1) midfield was (and is) in dire situation, even the likes of Wolves are stronger than us in midfield - it was clear last season already

2) there were many great midfielders available that would have strengthened us (think NDombele, Rodri and many others) - we were not in the market for either of them

3) considering how quickly rumors spread now, it is nearly impossible for us to be in fact “in negotiations with a midfielder” without gossip spreading. No gossip whatsoever, however...

So it is more likely than not, that we are not looking for midfielders and never were - and it, in turn, means that there were no ambition of Ole to try to win the league (it is impossible with Matic, Pereira and Fred, even if we receive Messi for Lukaku instead of Dybala).

I was listening to Amoyal podcast and he was pretty certain the deal to United was all but done, they don't usually talk that definitively without being sure, lets see.
A similar thing happened with Lampard to Chelsea and Sarri to Juve when all the reports were saying otherwise
 
Supposedly sky are now reporting that the rejected Spurs bid for Bruno will be their last one. Would be the shortest smokescreen I've ever seen.

We are not far off that level anyway. If we sign only a RB as a starting player this summer when it was clear as day we needed a serious injection of quality, then 5th or 6th beckons again this season.

And how can you say that with any certainty?

They can offer CL, a better young team with a better manager, a brand new stadium and London. They probably can't offer as much money though.

The time of really taking the piss out of the Spuds (aside from their desperate Audi Cup celebrations) is over, unfortunately.

I doubt it. People will find a thousand excuses why it's not our club's fault and why everything is rosy.

Did people really think we were going to sign Bruno, Maguire, and Dybala (if he agrees to join us in exchange for Lukaku)? That would take our (net) transfer spending this summer to £200m, which would never happen.

Because everything coming out of England says we like him but he's not a priority, apart from one line from Di Marzio everything has come from Portugal so it's got nothing to do with a player choosing between two clubs because if he goes to Spurs it's because he doesn't have another option
 
Signing Dybala whilst passing on the opportunity for Fernandes is classic Woodward, fecking dreadful.
 
Spurs could end up potentially signing the Two midfielders we should have been after this summer in Ndombele and Bruno...This could be a really tough season, with Arsenal and Tottenham seemingly leaving us further behind and the likes of Wolves, Leicester and Everton catching up. This is so draining

Would be really crazy if we pass bruno over dybala who seems reluctant to join...speculation but still.
 
Where will he play at Spurs ? He is not a CM.

Behind Kane - have both Dele and Eriksen. They are looking for a midfielder and not an attacking one

Well if United aren't interested then you're obviously right. I misread the tone of your post.
 
Every bloody window there’s a player the media, social media, YouTube, Reddit, the Caf build up into such a crescendo that the collective muppet hive-mind gets so distorted and convinced we must get Gourcuff ... oops sorry this about Fernandes ... this year’s Gourcuff, most likely. He’ll go to Spurs and drift into obscurity, provided Zenit St. Petersburg doesn’t swoop in.
 
Spurs are doing us a favour with their low-ball offers. Sporting will realize what we're offering is more than generous and we'll conclude the deal, if we really want him.
 
Sky are saying Spurs unlikely to up their offer so if that's true then there's nothing left to say on this
