Bruno Fernandes | United not interested due to doubts over passing ability

This is what Spurs normally do though, they buy players with potential and build them up and recently have had more hits than misses.

They had a great run in the summers of 2013-2015 but since then (not including this summer since the results are too early to judge) their biggest transfers have been Sissoko, Janssen, Wanyama, N'Koudou, Sanchez, Moura, Aurier, Llorente, and Foyth.

That is pretty terrible group on balance. Sanchez and Fothy could still come good and Moura and Sissoko have been useful contributors but there isn't a single really high performing player and there are a couple total busts.

If someone else takes him we'll be the laughing stock!
Why? Apparently we haven't even made a bid. So why would somebody signing somebody that we didn't go in for make us a laughing stock.

Now you might ask how I know we didn't go in for him. The same way you know we did. Media reports. Look at other reports but don't believe anything until Man Utd announce it.

One thing I don’t get with this development- why was he crying in the last game if a deal for him with some one wasn’t imminent?? Most bizarre transfer window ever this is turning out to be

Fernandes just doesn’t pass the good auld eye test for me, so that’s why this all seems a lot more Portuguese media and agent media talk than substance.

I remember when Gazza was skinning and nutmegging our players at Newcastle. I remember when Christiano Ronaldo played against against us with Sporting and thought we’d have to break his leg to stop him. I remember watching Leeds matches and thinking “nothing gets past bloody Rio Ferdinand.” The magic when I saw Davids, Van Nistelrooy, Sneijder, Seedorf or Van Brockhurst. Bloody Kante for Chelsea against us and everyone else. Hazard’s first match at Chelsea. Torres at ‘Pool. Cantona’s first match for us. Rooney’s first game for Everton. Seeing Messi, Ronaldinho, Mbappe for the first time thinking, “My god a what player.” Hummels for Dortmund and Germany that was breathtaking. Those were players. Those were sure things.

I ain’t seen that watching Fernandes.

The same Moura that got them into the champions league final?

It could have been his last game in Sporting's stadium in front of their fans.

I thought the pictures of him crying were from a game months ago. It seems he always knew he was playing on Sunday too.

I swear I had to google "Van Brockhurst" to see if there was some Dutch legend that slipped under my radar after all these years.
With all the legendary left backs in history you name van fecking Van Bronckhorst in your VIP list, and you don't even know his name.
Sorry if I don't trust the eye test that you performed on Bruno's YT compilation.

Piss and off.

We mess this up, dont we? Like Hazard or B. Silva

United didn't mess up Hazard at all. Hazard was stringing along 3 clubs when he already knew his mind was made up for Chelsea. United, Chelsea and some other PL club were his 'finalists'. And I don't recall Bernardo Silva ever being a serious candidate for United.

That's a pretty high bar (mostly)?

I'd love us to buy top, top players but in the situation we're in and the market conditions (gone are the days when clubs said "oh dear, it's United, we'll have to let that player go), I think we're looking at a 3-5 season turnaround and we might have to buy 7/10 players and work our way back to the 9's (and hopefully 10's).

Fair play, and I agree, but I think this Fernandes thing is way overblown. I’m in the minority, but you know who I am impressed with? Aaron Wan Bissaka. Got a Palace supporting mate, and saw him at Selhurst a couple of times way before we were linked and he was my #1. You know who else caught my eye? Harry Maguire, as unpopular as that is these days.

AWB has it. That lad is a player. Maguire is a solid signing for me. Fernandes - I’m just not seeing it. To each their own.

He is a very good player . And if he goes elsewhere we will end up kicking ourselves like hazard or B. Silva . All signings are a risk

You're not alone. Maguire caught my eye right from Sheffield United. And it's been upwards since then. I think AWB caught everyone's eye. Few hit the ground in a sprint the way he did at Palace. Fernandes doesn't catch the eye with the same glint but I do see something there. He has the makings of a great midfielder.

We’ll see, but Fernandes didn’t blow my doors off. I’m happy to be wrong, especially with f we sign him.

That’s the same for many people. Why the majority vouches for his signing is very easy - he is currently the only good midfielder we are linked to (maybe he is not great, but at least “good” - definitely). And we need midfielders as badly as it gets.

If it were for another midfielder of comparable quality - it would also be perfect

If Lukaku leaves, someone will come in

Desperation to sign players does funny things to folk. Might be doing people wrong but Im guessing most never heard of him and now they are comparing it to Hazard if we dont sign him. Crazy....

If we were strongly linked in the media with Wilfred Ndidi or providing Kante an escape route from Chelsea’s upcoming disaster of a season, Fernandes would be what he probably is, an afterthought.

Dybala is way way way the more 'marketable' player and as that is our main criteria for signing important players rather than who we actually need (i.e midfielders)we go all out for him make no mistake if there is ANY chance of a deal. Losing out on Bruno or both is a consequence we will risk and have seen many times before in previous windows . Woodward may also hope the arrival of Dybala could convince Pogba to stay i.e. a double marketing and future revenue bonus ! The club is run by money men now not football men.

Sigh... No one really does transfer saga like United. Other clubs just sign. We seem to enjoy the drama more than anything else. It's exhausting!
They really don't "just sign"
I'd suggest you pay more attention to other clubs if you think that.

Really don't understand the meltdown, by all accounts we've never really been interested in Bruno to put a bid in. The only midfielder we've been linked all summer is Longstaff, who Ole sees as a DM. Bruno is someone I believe to be Pogbas' replacement, if he were to be sold. His price has been €70m all summer, so its a pretty straight forward transfer given Sporting have set a price and player is willing to move.

Also, Spurs bidding €45m is expected. Levy is a genius, he'll try with low bids for likes of Celso/Bruno then pretend time ran out so they couldn't buy these good players

People keep saying we're not a laughing stock because we were never in for this or that player. I think it's debateable whether we were in for them or not but if we end this window with James (squad player) , Wan B and Maguire as our only signings we will be a laughing stock for not being in for players like Fernandes, Ndombele and Pepe who will be busy improving our main rivals in positions where we have the dubious quality of Lingard, Mata, Pereira etc to rely on. Trying for and not getting a player that's needed is bad enough but not even being in the mix is negligent.

We need to replace Fellaini and Herrera..

I have seen him play and I saw hazard play before he signed for Chelsea and was dissapointed we missed out on him , I also saw B. Silva and was also disappointed . I'm not Desperate , I think a blend of this type of player and our youth coming through can bring us back to the top . And yes I do think he is the right type of player for us and we need to invest in players that can play this type of game . Just my opinion

I agree with your view re AWB and also thought Maguire was really good in the world cup. But, I think Fernandez would be a massive improvement over Fred and lingard. Statistics don't lie do they! What midfielder/No 10 can get over 20 goals a season.

He wasn't a top player in Serie A though. Look at his appearance record, he was more of a squad player for most of his time there.
As a young player he played a total of 86 times for Udinese, including 2 straight seasons of 31 league appearances and 33. Whilst for Sampdoria he started 33 times in the league two years in succession. So the idea he isn't proven at that level is some what wide of the mark

We do not need him, we have Lingard and Mata just resigned which is like a new signing. People on here need to get a grip, we have a title winning side with young Mctominay ready to own a slot in midfield next to the world class and experienced Matic and Pogba is Pogba. We also have incredible back up of Fred, Andreas and Gomes. We are fully covered people, fully covered. Cries silently into a pillow.

This is all media b/s
I have heard nothing from the player reg us I have only heard him mention Citeh and Liverpool and who can blame the club for not wanting to splash a fortune on a player who has done well in another league given our recent history.

It's been bizarre how much people have been putting him fantasy lineups talking like it was just a matter of time till we signed him. Just so much wishful thinking. Getting your hopes up when its been driven by terrible sources 99% of the time all summer.

Well now Spurs have re-entered the race we will see if Utd really want to sign him or not. Personally my gut feeling is they were only interested if Pogba was leaving the club.

Still holding slim hopes that Utd are going to pull a CM rabbit right out of the hat next week, however it's more likely we will just firm up our interest in Longstaff.
