Brighton and Hove Albion 2024/25 season

That's fair. I'm also interested as I thought De Zerbi left because you weren't spending much money but it seems you're now spending a fair chunk of money? Unless it was more De Zerbi wanting to have more say in those that were signed.
De Zerbi wanted a bigger club with greater ambitions than try and qualify for the Conference if possible.

Or seen from Brighton's perspective: De Zerbi wanted the club to gamble on its future in an effort to break into the PL's upper echelons right away. The club understandably refused to humor him

Dahoud is unwanted and we’re trying to shift him, Alzate has been released, Kozlowski has been sold to Gaziantep in Turkey.

But you’re right about Baleba, this could be a huge season for him. We’ve also signed Mats Wieffer, Brajan Gruda, Malick Yalcouye (I’m guessing he is the Swedish one you mentioned, though we bought him Gothenburg, he is from the Ivory Cost and is more one for the future) and Yasin Ayari is back from loan.

We also have Milner and Moder. And though it looks like he’s going to Napoli, Gilmour is still in the squad.

So we have quite a few central midfielders.
What's your take on Jeremy Sarmiento? Is he staying or shipped out?

Question for @The Boy and any other Brighton supporters: It seems like the forward line is insanely crowded at this point and there must be a plan to sell somebody. Who do you think would be on the move?

Mitoma
Ferguson
Joao Pedro
Welbeck
Adingra
Gruda
Minteh
Rutter (if he comes)

Surely that is way too many players for three forward positions in a team not playing Europe this season. And that's not even including players like Sarmiento or Cozier-Duberry.

Are they selling a big player I wonder or just spending the money they've pocketed over recent years.

What's the thinking here then? Isn't he a LB? With Estupinan, Barco and this guy, they are looking pretty stacked.

I do feel like Barco could become a good CM of some sort though, clever little player who I would argue is wasted at LB.

They had injuries most of the season in defence and midfield. Obviously their defensive game was going to nosedive.
Injuries happen sometimes, you're supposed to build a squad that can cope with them without freefall when they occur and adapt tactically rather than continuing to play in a manner that is too risky for your weakened defence.

Potter never conceded anywhere near as many. As Potter's impact on the team faded more and more under the De Zerbi revolution it would've only gotten worse.

You didn't count Enciso and March either. Yeah something does not add up

You're supposed to build a squad to deal with it, but this is Brighton we're taking about. They don't have the backup that even we had last season, and look how we struggled.

I don't disagree regarding the second paragraph to an extent, Potter was much more conservative in his setup though. I think both did an excellent job, this is Brighton after all. 6th is great for them, and 11th (with major injury issues all season) isn't bad. And they started last season on fire until they lost their entire attack, half their midfield and half of their defence. They practically had their best players out all year, and were relying on players like Milner in defence in some games, CBs in CM (if I recall correctly) etc, whilst still sticking to the football that had served them well.

No rumours around any of them leaving. It is odd we are massively overstocked on the wings. Unless Hurzeler decides to play with wingers and wing backs!

Like I said I have no idea what to expect from us this season, we’ve spent like never before and our squad is bursting at the seams for the first time ever.

I've just seen their new manager on Sky Sports and had a double take. Looks like Freddy Flintoff with hair!

Last season they started well with Mitoma, Enciso etc firing, but then they declined? Maybe my impression is incorrect.

Is Enciso fit?

Your impression is correct. They really fell away.

Finally get the rivalry back to two evenly matched teams and you go and have a £200m summer…what you playing at @The Boy?

Not quite 200 million, but we've finally had a summer where we've kept our best players and strengthened, whereas you've sold one of yours, I keep hoping that Guehi will go to Newcastle and someone will pinch Wharton and Eze off you as well!

The table posted above shows how badly we fell away, but that was with Mitoma and Enciso both out for the season along with March who was playing brilliantly as well. We also lost Estupinan and Ferguson for months. You lose your best players and you lose matches. We've revamped our medical department this summer so hopefully we don't go through the same issues.

Annoyingly Enciso was injured again playing for Paraguay at the Olympics and will miss the first few games of the season, so he won't be in the squad this weekend.

That sucks. When you have the likes of Estupinan, Ferguson, Enciso, March and Mitoma out for long periods, I can see why Brighton fell off. Hopefully the squad remains fit. It's an interesting group of players and Enciso looked very good in the short amount of minutes I've seen.

I read O’Riley and Kadioglu are next so can’t be far off the £200m mark? Olise’s the big loss, happy for Guehi to go if we can re-invest it :)

And Rutter! I’ve no idea what’s going on this is the most unTony Bloom like transfer window ever!

He’s a wonderful player and I really hope we get to see a lot of him this season. He’s someone that can win a game all by himself.

Absolutely ridiculous if on top of this Brighton get O'Reilly and Kadioglu as well. Mental window.

Kadioglu and O'Riley on their way to Brighton. Busy transfer window for Brighton, but with players coming back from injury and no Europe, they could have a good season

A mid table Premier League club can spend £200 million this summer, whilst there are barely any clubs from continential Europe that can spend that much. The Spanish big 3 can do it once every few summers, like Atlético are doing now. Other than them, it's basically Bayern and PSG. Maybe Juve once every few summers too. The Premier League has been the de facto Super League for a long time at this point.

weird. Of all the times they’ve beaten us or we’ve undeservedly beat them that was probably the least impressive they’ve been. They sort of stood us off for a lot of the game. Didn’t seem to have that possession craving they had under De Zerbi and Potter which probably made them look a lot more solid. We barely tested their keeper. Definitely a noticeable tactical change in the first two games under the new man. @The Boy what are your thoughts on the first two games?

This post was a couple of weeks ago but Barco has just gone to Sevilla where he'll play week in week out so will come back into Brighton contention for 25/26.

Estupinan is good but again riddled by injury for last 12 months.

Means Hinshelwood can move back across and alternate at RB with Veltman and Lamptey.

They needed this sort of squad a year ago to have ability to rotate for Europa so fascinated how they keep everyone happy playing once a week mainly. Also think they're still a bit light centrally, hard to see Milner-Gilmour doing much at Arsenal next weekend and Wieffer needs time to get up to the pace of the prem.

Yeah it makes more sense now he's on loan. And I agree that they've added the depth now, last season may have been different with this squad, as they were ravaged by injury. But they're new to the PL in a way so I suppose it takes time to build something.

Yeah I was surprised to see no Wieffer yesterday, was he injured? I fully expect Baleba to be their main man in midfield before too long.

Any word on how serious it is? I’m assuming they’ll learn more tomorrow when the swelling recedes. Hopefully it’s not too lengthy of an injury

Kadioglu for that money is incredible business. I think he’ll be a revelation for them. Brilliant footballer.

I was thinking we might see a little bit of Ferguson tonight. See if he could grab a goal off the bench for some badly needed confidence. Just an unused substitute in the end but presumably he is close to returning.

There are rumours he might leave.
