Rodgers on Chelsea approach: 'It's the polar opposite to what we do ... it's not difficult to coach, to put 10 players on the 18-yard box'
Rodgers asked whether he would ever set up a team to play like Chelsea. Answers, 'What do you think?'
Rodgers: 'Jose will probably shove his CV in front of me [to justify approach] but it's not my way of working, I like to take initiative'

Is this his Keegan moment?

Bottled it.

Villa and West Ham!?

You'd probably only pick Cardiff and Fulham above those 2 in the banker stakes!

Anything can happen in football but yeah, like I said, City should definitely win both games comfortably.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. The league is far from over and Liverpool are still top atm.
It's not over. But it will come down to the game at Everton. I think city will do it. Everton have lost 4th. Hopefully they aren't in top gear.

Yup, I'm hoping for a last minute Darren Gibson OG to effectively hand City the title.

If City win against Everton it is 99% over. They will steamroller Villa and West Ham at the Etihad with the title on the line.

Or one Mrs. Rodgers.

 Grow up you big bellend. When it comes to the nitty gritty of winning the league title, anything goes. He's a cracking manager is Brenton, but he's got a hell of a lot to learn. Self-indulgent nonsense like that is only a weakness.

Man... is that Brenton's wife! "Everybody thinks they have most beautiful wife at home" comment can't be tried on him then :(

He might still win title and has done admirable job but you have got to find way against teams that park bus. You conceded 2 goals in the end to a team with 25% possession. That's more damning verdict on you than that team.

He is losing the plot. This reminds me of the kind of nonsense Rafa would talk.

And City. And West Ham. Their luck has run out now hopefully.

all top teams have luck, but it was getting silly with the amount of penolas, Suarez not sent off, Skrtel's handball, pens not going against them, deflected goals. It was really getting out of control.

now it's real. And whatever Brenton said, now is pressure.

He's in for a pretty rude awakening in Europe next season when they face the elite sides. They won't just roll over like pussies and allow his side to do as they please like the majority of their games this season.

He'll also actually have to rotate his squad next season and juggle multiple competitions. This is the best chance they'll have at the title for some time.

I think his lack of plan B got exposed tonight. After the 70min mark you can tell he was feeling really lost.

This is the best chance they'll have at the title for some time.

Yep. Said it months ago that this was the best chance for any of the "pretenders" from previous years to stage a title tilt: Ferguson gone, City with a new man in, Chelsea likewise. I genuinely thought Arsenal might be the team to profit but then I remembered that they are Arsenal.

Liverpool have done well this season but they've missed the boat. They're going to be fifth in the pecking order again next year when all variable are considered.

How has Brenton quite clearly had an extra-marital affair and it hasn't been plastered all over the front pages?

Dirty bastard.

Rodgers would be better off wondering why they couldn't break down a team that had rotated quite a bit rather than taking the moral high ground as to styles of play.

Possibly because no one other than sad cnuts give the tiniest feck?

If his game-plan wasn't naive, then his post-match comments certainly are. Claiming that what Mourinho did 'isn't a tactic' and that anyone can do it? He probably thinks framing it like that gives him the moral high ground, but it just makes him sound inexperienced.

Few teams can make a total shut-out work whilst still maintaining the ability to break dangerously the way Chelsea can under Mourinho. It's not as if their goals were their only chances, either, they had plenty that could have worked out better if Ba's decision-making had been a little better. There was nothing desperate about Chelsea's defending, either - I'd hazard to say they probably had more genuinely dangerous attacks than Liverpool did.

He's just joining a long list of managers who have made themselves look silly moaning after Mourinho has beaten them fair and square.

Actually, it's that attitude that proves he's a poor manager, the inability or stubbornness in refusing to adapt is his downfall. He did it at Reading and took them to the bottom 4 of the Championship, when they had previously been in the play-offs. You could argue that the players weren't good enough to play the kind of football he was telling them to play, but then a good manager would adapt his tactics to the players he has available. He's got away with it this season in the League because the games, in terms of form for other teams, have fallen for them, along with decisions from the ref. Don't be too surprised if they struggle again next season.

He has no plan B. Jose owned him today.
Mou showed who's the wily old fox today.

Both his subs combined to finish off Liverpool. Aspas and Sturridge, however, were pretty terrible. In fact it was Sturridge losing the ball which started the Chelsea counter.

Rather like how his side have relied upon it for stuffy goals of late, Rodgers is using deflection to pass the buck.

I cannot believe the press aren't calling him out on their profligacy today. Absolutely no variation in their play, no leadership forthcoming from the sidelines - it was rabbit-in-the-headlights stuff.

Great to see.

It's a public interest story. A high-profile manager separating from his wife, moving into a new pad and meeting up with a younger, recently divorced ex-employee only a few weeks after is certainly news-worthy. Perhaps I missed the grand reveal, albeit I just did a bit of reading from the Mail's sidebar of shame, and I personally couldn't care less, but the Sun and the Mirror love to go to town on this kind of thing.

A "Buck Rodgers" splash is very apt.

Next season Rodgersball will be found out. Teams won't be as naive next season.
I doubt they can remain relevant next season with the similar style of football. Their pattern in big matches have been very obvious. High tempo attack with everything they got for the first 30-40 minutes and try to finish off the game. Their quality in play typically faces a significant drop in the second half. Their defence is particularly leaky as feck. 46 goals conceded for a title challenger is ridiculous.

I watched the first 50 minutes of Liverpool's game today and I was severely underwhelmed by some of Liverpool's players, particularly Cissokho and Aspas. It also got me thinking: how many of Rodgers' own signings can be classified as unqualified successes?

HIT
  • Coutinho
  • Sturridge
PROBABLY SHIT
  • Toure
  • Mignolet
  • Sakho
  • Allen
SHIT
  • Aspas
  • Luis Alberto
  • Cissokho*
  • Moses*
  • Yesil
  • Assaidi
  • Sahin*
  • Borini
* loan signings

That's very, very unconvincing if you're to be honest about it. To give Rodgers credit, he has gotten the best out of Suarez and Henderson (a player written off by many, and whom was apparently offered to Fulham in part-exchange for Clint Dempsey) but his record in the transfer market leaves a lot to be desired.

N.B. Mignolet and Sakho could well prove to be successes, but they've looked shaky at times this season and the jury is still out on them.

Any Scousers want to re-visit this little debate now? There was a lot of guff spouted the last time it reared its head...

Iago Aspas?
