Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "The players gave everything into the game. We just couldn't make the breakthrough and the longer it goes on, it gives them a wee bit more encouragement. I can't fault the payers. I thought they gave everything tonight. We just needed that first goal. We weren't at our best but we certainly were on the front foot, looking to create."

A bizarre piece of analysis: they couldn't get the break-through and that gave them encouragement!?!

Brenton is meh. Not bad, not great. Just another LFC manager who will get the boot in another season or two.

As in Liverpool didnt get the break through and it gave West Brom encouragement.

Yep Rodgers made sense here. Even if you are ripping the other team apart, if you can't put the ball in the net, the other team will always have half a chance to make you pay especially as time goes on.

Rodgers's just applied Edison quote, quite literally. "“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” There are 12 'ways' to go, Brendan.

Apart from the blatantly obvious, and that is that the majority of pool players barring maybe suarez, who was having a bit of a mare of a game but at least was trying, couldnt give two fecks out on that pitch yesterday.

Saying they gave their all is just nonsense pandering to the crowd , they were walking around the pitch with 10 minutes to go and 1-0 down at home, losing isnt the big deal , or it shouldnt be for pool fans, they are a mid table team, the get up for the big games, feck up against similar level opposition, its what mid table teams do, what should piss everyone off is the players not being arsed. That should be the giant red flag for the manager too, so what does he do, he says the exact opposite of what went on on the pitch and tries to make out they were busting a gut for the club.

"We've been on a terrific run. I'm very disappointed with the goal. That first goal was crucial.

"I can't fault the players, though. We weren't at our best but we were on the front foot for most of the game. It's a good away performance from West Brom.

"If you can keep it to 0-0 you always have a chance. And Ben Foster has made some fantastic saves to keep them in the game. Losing is a big disappointment but we'll be back in tomorrow and get going again."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This terrific run prior to the WBA game included one win, 2 draws and two defeats in their last 5 games, including a defeat at Oldham Athletic.

Terrific!

"Unfortunately, I can't fault the players. Wasn't Joe Allen fantastic? He's got a great future ahead of him, like his namesake Joe Pasquale. The defence were dogshit though.

But you can't hide behind excuses; Brendan Rodgers doesn't hide behind excuses - The buck stops with the young players. Little bastards..."

Had some of the best form in the league actually.

What did he say? I'm not too informed on the Brenton case.

He said this

"It is great for the public here at Sunderland to see us," he said after the game. "They must have been wondering what this team everyone is talking about are all about and now they have seen. We were wonderful. Our intention is always to pass teams to a standstill, but give credit to Sunderland, they defended ever so well when other teams might have wilted." Sunderland had just beaten Swansea 2-0.

Well, I think the run they went on was terrific if that counts for anything. I don't know why I'm talking about it in the past tense when they're still on it, though. One of my favourite runs of recent times.

He said this

Wow that is quite astonishing really, from reading that until the last line, I was certain Swansea had beaten them... very strange comment indeed.. I'm not his biggest fan but I don't suppose Liverpool are really.. Especially not now they look likely to finish lower than Everton

Typical us last night to put in 2 decent performances against good teams and then take a step backwards again.

To be honest first half I thought we did ok, bit sloppy with passing but a better final ball and we could have been a couple in front.

They defended well, and caught us with a 'smash & grab' act.
Sturridge was missed, Shelvey should have been sat in the stands, Agger has forgotten how to defend, Enrique had one of those nights and was probably Johnson's worst game of the season.

Poor substitutions, Downing and Henderson were doing ok and should have stayed on. Borini can't hit a barn door, though to be fair did make some good runs.

As ever first goal is all important, but we lost the plot after the penalty miss and a few looked like they weren't interested at the end.
Foster had a good game, they were well organised and despite never really looking like scoring, they did....twice.
It's easy to say it would have been a different game had some of the chances been taken, had the penalty not been missed. Just not good enough.
4th? Not a chance.

Carragher is still our best defender, and some serious thinking needs to go into the defence in the next transfer window.

I have heard a number of Scousers on the radio saying that Brenton doesn't have the experience to manage a 'big' club like Liverpool. Do they forget they had an experienced manger (Hodgeson) & they hounded him out as soon as they could. I doubt very much he would have wasted so much money on crap transfers over the last 2 years & they would be in a better position than they are now.

Glad he got out while he could & is now managing England.

If they had gotten behind Hodgeson then and allowed him a similar amount of cash they allowed KKK they would be in or around the top four now.

They lost to Wolves and Blackpool at home under Hodgson. Both sides are now in the Championship. He wasn't the solution(and he's proving for England that he's well out of his depth at a decent level).

"I don't take shitty jobs..."

Unbelievable. I thought that was a nailed on Liverpool win. When they play well in the games with the big name clubs, and then are so shit everywhere else, you have got to look at the manager. He obviously has no impact on the players. The players only get themselves up for games when they know it's a showcase game.

But do they play well against the big name teams? They haven't beaten a single top half team in the league so far this season.

You can see what he is trying to do but it just isn't coming off at the moment. He'll need to be given a bit more time though.

Hodgson did an appalling job at Liverpool. They'd be nowhere near the top 4 with Hodgson in charge.

How is he?

Sure I mean beating brazil these days is a walk in the park. Bring on those tough away days to San Marino

His tactics in EURO 2012 were beyond embarrassing. He made us play like we were a league two side away at the champions and clearly didn't rate us at all.

His tactics were actually pretty spot on. His biggest mistake was in the QF against Italy to give Pirlo so much room to pull the strings, the guy's a brilliant player of course but we surely could've done more back then to cause him problems. Giving Pirlo time on the ball is inviting punishment on yourself. However, he was almost vindicated in his tactical choices and we didn't do that bad. The thing is, we go in most international competitions thinking we're favourites cos we've got "the best players of the best league in the world" in the squad, but it's never really materialized, for various reasons.

Hodgson took a very pragmatic approach and tried to make us play on our strengths, which got us out of a group which might have been tricky. I'm not his biggest fan, I especially don't understand the love he has for certain Liverpool players, but I think he's very lucid about the state and level of the team and doesn't let the media hype go to his head. He might just be the manager England needs to do a little bit better in international tournaments.

And furthermore, I like the shape he's giving the team, if the midfield is based around Cleverley and Wilshere, I'm in.
