"...and furthermore, Steven Gerrard is not just the greatest sportsman in history but he's also the greatest human being..."
"Bren, Stevie's just retired at the age of 67."
"Christ - couldn't he wait until I finished my speech about him?"

Brentan Rodgers has basically just admitted Steven Gerrard is like a God to him:

I think his departure could mean Rodgers can now actually manage the team, things will no longer be complicated by his love for Gerrard or personal living arrangements.

I love the fact that you think Rodgers would actually put his own managerial career at risk by starting Gerrard every week. It's a mental idea, always has been. If Rodgers wants to continue to manage at a big club, then he has to do well with us.

He's beyond a legend.

Stevie, close the door on your way out

Why, in your opinion, did he opt for Gerrard in midfield with Henderson out of position against Leicester, when a team with Henderson in position and without Gerrard worked so well versus Swansea?

Think it was a great PR move by Gerrard to announce his leaving Anfield right after their bitter capitulation to Leicester. The media have barely even mentioned that game and how tactically inept Rodgers is.

Yes because when I say Rodgers is starting Gerrard due to a clause in their tenancy agreement I'm being serious...

Had a different view on Gerrard before taking over at Liverpool. Now, he's obviously going to praise Gerrard in a situation like this, but he's done a Rodgers here - gone completely over the top.

Cringe.

My good god, Rodgers is unreal sometimes. Was he spouting as much shit when he was with other clubs or does he just know that scousers lap this shit up?
Well at Swansea he said, when they were playing away to some team, something about the homefans being priviliged to see his amazing team play. Can't remember exactly what he said but it was a wtf moment.

After a 2-0 loss to Sunderland, too!

"It is great for the public here at Sunderland to see us," he said after the game. "They must have been wondering what this team everyone is talking about are all about and now they have seen. We were wonderful. Our intention is always to pass teams to a standstill, but give credit to Sunderland, they defended ever so well when other teams might have wilted."

They might run out of Gerrards soon enough though and he'll finally be fecked.

Dont be so cynical, he announced it because he doesn't want any fuss, or for the rest of the season to be one long homage to his depature, wants to stay out of the spotlight and keep the team focused on finishing in the top 10, thats why he announced he's leaving in July, in January.

Paraphrasing, but "Baines can be the new Lahm". Is about as mad as he's gotten yet, I believe. That and moaning about Moyes wanting to pinch players from his old club before then buying a handful of Wigan players.
Lahm is probably more over-hyped than Baines.

I agree, but I do think the consequences of losing while leaving Gerrard out are bigger than losing with him in. Fans are surely more likely to turn on a struggling manager who benched their hero.

So there is an incentive to not bench Gerrard.

About as funny as the Guardian's usual fare...

Brentan isn't scared of playing Chelsea apparently..

Brentan said:
"I think a big part is down to the players. Once they cross the line it is about them and the confidence and the qualities they have," said the Reds boss.

"He is a top-class manager, Jose Mourinho has proven that over the last decade or so.

"He has great experience but once the players cross the line for me I have a big trust in the group and they are working well at the moment.

"For us it is certainly not a threat, it is an opportunity to reach a final."

Is it just me or does that read as 'If we lose it's the players fault, not mine'?

What question was asked? That plays a big role in how you interpret the first sentence.

And why would he be scared of playing Chelsea? Why would a manager of a good team be scared going into any football match? We've also got a pretty decent record against Chelsea in cup semi-finals at Anfield, in case you'd forgotten. :)

Because he's played us three times and lost all three, including one particular match you might remember quite vividly? :)

just seen a vid from last nights match with him talking about courtois. Unless its edited (which it doesnt look to be) he said:

"Hes handballed it outside the area... so its a penalty"

ermm.

So 1 loss (against us) in the last 16 games for him. What's the consensus for him on here right now?

Seems the albatross that is Gerrard has been lifted from him. Got Liverpool functioning again, playing some good football, too. He's still embarrassing, though.

That is a very impressive statistic and he's done well because I thought he was on borrowed time after they lost at Palace. It does feel a bit like our run though in that the stats flatter the performances, that run has included draws at home to Bolton, Leicester (when 2 up), Basel and Sunderland as well as away to Ludogorets. They were unfortunate against us but were pretty lucky against Burnley and Villa as well. It looks like it will be close whether we finish above them or not and whether both, one or neither of us make the top 4/ the FA Cup final.

Just seen their next 14 odd games in all competitions.

They will be nowhere near us in a couple of months time. Their easier games are congested by cup matches while they also have to face:

West Ham - H
Everton - A
Tottenham - H
Southampton - A (3 days after Besiktas)
(Besiktas Away 4 days later)
Man City - H (3 days later)
Burnley - H (3 days later)
Swansea - A (Potential Europa game 2/3 days before)
United - H (Potential Europa game 2/3 days before)
Arsenal - A (After international break I think - Sturridge injured)
Newcastle - H

What a fixture list for that little squad

It won't last too long, they certainly won't have the finish they had last season. They picked up 41 from their last 16 games last year, if they did that again this year (they won't) it still wouldn't be enough to get into last years Top 4.

You only have to look at the fixtures above to know they will struggle once they start playing in Europe again.

To be honest, I hadn't looked at the fixtures but that is a very tricky run especially with Europe and possibly more cup games as well in there. The points total for top 4 will be lower than last season, there are fewer teams consistently performing at the top of the table, but they could be a fair bit off the pace by the end of that run.
