I'm lost for words. What do you call Liverpool last season then?

I don't know, but we weren't as reliant on Suárez who was nowhere near involved in our build up play as much as Messi is for Barcelona now. He ends up started moves at the half way line and finishing them off too, because their midfield is underperforming.

I wasn't trying to compare them to Liverpool anyway.

Definition of 'folklore': "the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth."

I can imagine it, 6 generations from now Liverpool fans will speak of how their great great great white bearded granddad was at Anfield to witness the legendary Maestro Rodgers with his fake tan and heavenly white teeth lead Liverpool to glory against all odds taking down the mighty FC Basle of Switzerland as Liverpool progressed into the last 16 of the champions league. They too will pass this legend on to their children and they on to their children for as long as they live, legend has it that night Maestro Rodgers retired to his rented apartment and slept well for supreme captain Kim Jong-Gerrard rewarded his loyal tenant with a tempur mattress.

I admit that's a poor choice of words but I don't think Vladimir Smicer and co would've thought they got into Liverpool 'folklore' by winning that game against Olympiacos ten years ago. How unlikely it may seem right now, anything is possible in the elimination stages. I think going through tonight would be a good achievement though and pretty much what every realistic fan expected before the season.

Will they sack him if they fail to win tonight? 6 wins out of 15 this season and out in the group stage, his tenure may come to a halt.
No way. He'll be given a fair run of games with the whole squad healthy for sure (or at least with Sturridge back). Maybe we'll make some good signings in January, we've always done better deals in that transfer window.

They have pretty tough December as well. Away to United, Home to Arse, away to Burnley and home to Swansea. I expect them to win no more than 4 points in those 4 games.

Four points would be very, very bad out of those fixtures. Arsenal are as woeful as we are right now, Burnley away isn't easy but it's a game that we should aim to win and same goes for Swansea.

I expect them to beat Basel tonight given what is at stake, so this thread will have plenty of new material for a few days - just imagine how smug he is going to be in that post-match interview, the media will lap it all up yet again.

"I never had any doubt that I'd be able to lead the team to victory using my tactical genius and young girlfriend. What can I say other than I'm a gift to football? Liverpool fans best eva. 5 times. We go again."

it's like he used up all his luck last year, that was a comedy red!

The ref must be a KRAP fan. Gave Rodgers the perfect excuse to paper over their woeful performance.

Genuinely don't understand why he doesn't play Lallana and Coutinho.

There best two players for me

"We were outstanding. Brilliant. I can't expect more from players. They gave their everything. Some of our play was just beautiful and it was a complete performance. Gerrard as always was superb and he has been Liverpool's Nelson Mandela over the years. I have no complaints about the players. I don't want to talk about referee but it was horrendous decision and referee was totally inept. At this level, you need the best referees and we got one of the worst. That's life I guess but I don't want to talk about it. The decision cost us the game and it was totally brain dead moment from referee. We could have absolutely hammered them otherwise. Outstanding and brilliant performance nonetheless. Looking forward to Europa league. There will be some massive games and the brilliant Anfield atmosphere and Gerrard magic will once again carry us through"

If he says that it's because he's saving them for United, RAWK will actually go on a meltdown.

The only reasoning I can think of is Markovic is pacy and has technique that can match up with Basel's fast pressing game. Same goes for Moreno who has that Spanish technique everyone raves about every once in a while with natural pace. Unfortunately, he completely misread the fact that the midfield needed some impetus and that's what Coutinho could have given them early on. Plus Coutinho has "European" technique. Basically... I have no clue what he's thinking.

Found out as a manager this season, always knew last season was a fluke because of Suarez's brilliance

He's not a bad manager as such, he did well with Swansea before he went to Liverpool and last season was more than just Suarez. Definitely struggling though, and has made some terrible decisions and signings.

Liverpool this season after actually probably quite similar to us in some respects, to be honest.
In what way? David Moyes really made it hard for Bayern Munich, Brentan Rodgers couldn't even beat bloody Basel.

I'm referring to the league. Moyes actually did okay in the CL, strangely enough, despite being terrible at just about everything else.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers speaking to ITV Sport: "We have to fight going forward to be in this competition next season. We are not too far off the top four and, if we get there, we will be better in it next season. The possibility of January signings is something to discuss with the owners, but there was a big investment in the summer. We have been unlucky with injuries to key players who are important to the way that we play, but that is to take nothing away from the players tonight who have put everything into the game."

On Lazar Markovic's sending off:" I thought it was an awful decision, I thought the referee was poor tonight to say the least. Young Markovic has come on and been bright and, although he has put his hand out, it was not a sending off. The referee has seen the lad lying on the floor holding his face, but I don't know if he has seen the actual incident."

:lol::lol::lol:

It's his first season in the CL. Basel and Real Madrid are hardened clubs who have extensive experience navigating the stage. Reminds me of Dortmund's struggles in their first year back in the CL. The struggles are understandable. Rodger's biggest problem is ensuring Liverpool are in the competition next year.

Lucky to make it to Christmas at this rate. Either he's lost the dressing room or he's been truly found out.

Agree with you.

Its beautiful how things have worked since we sacked Moyes. They turned to shit together with their manager and we're again above them like it should be. Oh to remember the Moyes is football genius banner. Oh the irony now.

I haven't said anything regarding Liverpool's last season in that post. I'm talking about the overall picture. And that is that United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal are all in a better position to be successful in the long term then Liverpool. Whether you want to admit that or not is your choice.

Of those teams Rodgers is by far and away the most likely to be still in post in 5 years' times. That is a significant positive which is cause for optimism, not to mention the trajectory of the rise in quality in the past 18 months. Whether you want to acknowledge these factors as significant or not is your choice.

I consider Liverpool to have unearthed a gem in Rodgers. Not simply because he has his team playing arguably the league's best football and not just because of his ability to get players to improve but because everything about him indicates 'long term'. This isn't a manager de jour here as part of a trans-European junket. I firmly believe his capacity to stick around offers a lot to be optimistic about.

So, hows that going for you then?

I think the pressure is on him.

You lot are playing some awful football at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised even if you lost in the League cup these days.

Swansea will be tough to beat at home, and I can't decide who plays a worse football these days - you or Arse. IMO you'll lose against United and draw the rest of the games in December, but that's just me.
