Possibly the most ridiculous thing you've ever said. Makalele was quite possibly the best defensive midfielder to grace a football pitch. He was lauded to the sky by the kinds of players who populate everyones best ever lists, however because of the DM role being so underappreciated he rarely gets the recognition he deserves from fans.

Anyway, this belongs in the first 11 thread.

Jesus. You overrate Makélélé. The whole thing about him "inventing" that role that seemed to follow him in England was an embarrassment, plenty of players had already defined that role in the past.

He was a great player, just nowhere near as good as you suggest, and the whole "this player said he was really good" argument is nonsense, you could use that to prove anyone was great.

This is just newbie BS. Makelele was feted exactly because it was posh to overrate "such an underrated player."

The best thing that ever happened to Makelele's reputation was being offloaded by Real Madrid without a replacement.

Suddenly, football dilletantes discovered "the defensive midfielder" and thought it in vogue to praise the watercarrier, as if it were something new and unexplored to digest. It made him the most iconic water carrier in the game, but that in no way equates to the best of them.

What Makelele did for Madrid was good, but it wasn't just special or unique. Many other players could do the same. Where Madrid went badly wrong was thinking what he did was superfluous and not bother to sign a replacement. Especially for a setup so tilted with attacking players.

Makelele was not anything much more special than the likes of Mascherano, Hamann, Simeone, Redondo.

The likes of Desailly, Vieira, Souness, Rijkaard and Matthaus piss on him from a great height when it comes to evaluating the alltime greats of that position.

I would also argue Redondo pisses on him too tbh

Zinedine Zidane - "Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?"

Steve McManaman - "the most important and yet least appreciated midfielder at Real"

Fernando Hierro - "he's been the best player in the team for years but people just don't notice him"

But ok lads, you clearly know better.

You are basically just reinforcing your own naivety here.

It was the role of the defensive midfielder that was the most important and least appreciated at Madrid. Something Makelele was very good at, no doubt.

Real erred in thinking they didn't need one.

There were plenty of others who could have done a similar job for them if they had been interesting in signing one, instead of fecking around with Beckham and Gravesen for the position.

Hierro is another one who was a better defensive midfielder than him.

.

Yeah, most Sunday teams have always had someone (who couldn't run) doing it. Anchor role, I think we called it back in the day.

Absolutely. I think its very important to stress that the opinion of some scouser sat at home in his full kit with the benign face of King Kenny staring down from the mantel carries far more weight than the throwaway trashy and frankly ill informed utterances of amateur know nothings like Zidane. I regret my stupid decision to trust the opinion of idiotic professional footballers and managers over your own. I hope this doesnt cause a rift in our relations. I don't want to have to walk alone.

Lol, you massive whopper. Sorry your only thoughts about things are quotes.

Not to compare Gareth Barry to Makelele, but David Silva a couple of seasons ago said he thought he was Manchester City's most important player. That type of player does get underrated by outsiders, and hence, you'll get their teammates, manager etc. singing their praise; there's no need for them to sing the praises of the star player who everyone knows is a world class talent.

Complete tosh you can't really believe that?

Makalele was so underrated that he was overrated by football bloggers. And now he's beginning to get underrated. For pity's sake, won't you blokes let the man be?

Pah. Underrating players is overrated in my opinion.

But, yeah, Brentan: Clearly overrated. Possibly also underrated. His teeth are rated about right, though.

He definitely underrated that fecking sunbed.

He's just preparing for his post Management career in reality TV, he's got a spot locked in for Mersyside Shore what with all the other violently orange people in Liverpool.

Hahaha. Very funny.........

:eek::wenger:

Seriously only United supporters would pick Giggs?

So people are happy to put Sherear in their side and shoehorn Gerrard in but the man who has 13 Premier League titles would only be picked by United fans?

By this logic Benitez would be this teams manager because only United fans would choose Sir Alex. After all it's often pointed out that SAF wasn't the most tactically astute manager despite laying waste to all the better managers around him.

Not that it means anything but Giggs would be the first player I'd think of in a Premier League all time 11. But then again I do support United.

Giggs has won plenty of trophies due to being a very good player in a consistently excellent team, managed by the best manager of all time.

There are a number of superior individual players that have player in his position down the years, in my opinion.

He was very happy with the performance, feels he cannot fault the players since they did everything they possibly could, he introduced his landlord onto the pitch as per their tenancy agreement, he thought Gerrard's performance was key to the result as he was outstanding and Raheem Sterling was brilliant but they just didn't have the luck (moyes?) needed to make the breakthrough. He also praised Gerrard even more, for like 1 minute straight, non-stop praise like he was Jesus, he claims Raheem never goes down easily or dives. And finally he wants them to hopefully qualify from the group after their game against Basel.

Finally this thread is back on track. The others please feck off and start a Makelele thread.

His constant arse kissing of Gerrard is getting a bit much now, if he's your best player (world class?) why not start him and then take him off when the game is won or in control? His record in the transfer window is pretty woeful and without a genuine 'world class' talent to inspire the team he's looking a very average manger at best, problem is the guy gives the impression he believes he's the next Mourinho, and he's not.

I counted him saying "like I said/as I said" around 11 times! - the weirdo!

He looks nervous in interviews and the praise he is giving 'Stevie' and 'young Raheem' is incredible - he is talking about Gerrard as if he has just announced his retirement, this last week has been a constant stream of eulogies!

In his world all the players were "outstanding" and he "can't fault any of them" :wenger:

It's because he's a total slave to the fans. From day one he's clocked that keeping the fans on-side is how you stay in the Liverpool job. The terror he must have felt when he realised he'd 'disrespected' the mighty Stevie G by dropping him on his anniversary game! Since then he's taken every opportunity to give Starfish's starfish a good tonguing just so the fans know he's as hopelessly in love with the man as they are.

Incredible that how much he was carried by Suarez last season. All the goals are obviously gone but Liverpool look absolutely woeful attacking these days. Such an huge opposite from last season where they absolutely annihilated teams in the first quarter of the match.

And, come to think about it, it all started with that magical slip of Steve's. That moment, everything went to feck. Suarez decided that he'll run away to Barcelona ( playing with Sterling and Sturridge up front? that's just too much for him ), Sturridge's body collapsed and started injuring itself as a punishment for losing the title, Sterling burned out and decided to take care of this 10 children and Brenton was finally found out as a clueless cock.

Not to mention the irreversible damage that was done to Slippy's mind of course, one slip away from achieving his dreams, one slip from making every red scouser happy, one slip from becoming the hero who carried Liverpool on his fragile shoulders to the glory. He trully is a hero to people not only of Liverpool but whole Kingdom.

Goals and confidence too. With Suarez most of their players played better and oozed confidence. It's like Suarez's departure has awaken them to their true level.

Losing a player like him plays a huge role but he's replaced him absolutely poorly. Not even referring to the dip in quality but just the dip in style.

Pool absolutely slaughtered team because of their pace and movement. Superb quick incisive football. When he lost Suarez, he should have replaced him with players who played the same way. He went on to get Labert and Balotelli meaning he didnt just lose quality, he fecked the very style which made them so lethal.
