Television Breaking Bad

Well then we're taking Cranston and the whole production out of the equation, and can just compare screenplays. And Shakespeare still wins hands down.
I'd say a far better way would be to compare Breaking Bad with a particular performance of a Shakespeare play.

Can't believe we're comparing a TV show to the works of a writer that died 400 odd years ago. And people thought the Scholes-Gerrard comparison was pointless...

Music's a bit different. You appreciate the complexity and achievement of music less than you just aesthetically enjoy it.

But the point was, Irwin said this....

This is a much more complex webbed plot than any of the Shakespeare plays I remember reading.

This is unfairly out of whack considering BB has had 5 years and 62 hours to tell it's story. By sheer necessity it's going to be more complex and webbed than something supposed to be enjoyed in one sitting. Would you say the first 3 episodes of season 1 was better than Romeo & Juliet?

That's also out of whack considering BB knew it had more than 3 episodes to tell its story.

I should probably have gone with a drama comparison. Eastenders has been mentioned. That has an awful lot of episodes but you won't find many who say that there aren't things much shorter that offer more artistically.

Irwin highlights the advantages that a longer work has. There are obviously many advantages to a shorter work.

I once saw an interpretative dance that was better than Breaking Bad.

He says more in a couple of shuffles than he ever could as Walter White.

They need to put on a stage performance of BB.

And HBO needs to make a 5 season long show on Macbeth.

I once went to see a production of Hamlet that felt 62 hours long. Full frontal male nudity as well, which I'm not sure Bill would've condoned. A bit too arty farty for what I imagine his tastes would've been.

I once saw a production of 'Hair' in a small community theatre above a pub in Notting Hill. That has full frontal nudity in it, but there were more people in the production than in the audience, so there were more naked people than not, dancing about in a small room above a pub. It was uncomfortable in several different ways.

It was also shit.

Anyone ever tried meth, by the way? Any good?

I know a guy who tried it in Bali. He was with some surfers and he thought they were smoking something like Salvia, he found out the next day that it was meth. He said he took a few hits from a pipe and realised after the first one it wasn't anything like Salvia but at that point didn't care. Spent the night wired, felt horrendous the next day with paranoia and cold sweats. Found himself "considering trying it again" despite not really enjoying it and flew back to New Zealand the following day in fear that he was going to become an addict. I laughed my head off at that but in hindsight he might well have saved himself with that over the top precaution.

Jeebus. I very much doubt I'd ever try it, Faces Of Meth is enough to deter me. I don't know anyone who's ever tried it, although I did used to live with this Glaswegian who used to smoke crack and heroine.

Ah, another one of those stories that starts with "I know a guy who..."

Is this a good show? Been meaning to watch it. Sadly, I'm irritated because everyone loves to make the "OMG Hardy darr darr, you study chemistry, you can be Heisenberg"

It took me a while to realise that they were not referring to the Physicist.

It's well worth watching.

You may find this irritating too, but I have read that this chemistry is all accurate in the show. They had some chemist working with them on the show from quite early on to make sure everything was done properly.

Theatre and TV (or films) are completely comparable. However BB is not better than Shakespeare.

If Shakespeare wrote a play that was 62 hours long, then perhaps we could compare the merits of his storytelling with Gilligans.

He didn't though. He did write shit loads though, and on his own, without a team of writers.

I can't believe I'm actually having to say this.

Making up words--and real, useful words that are still used nonetheless-- as he went along.

Makes me laugh that Bryan Cranston probably knows feck all about chemistry. So convincing.

Yeah.

Other acting performances which have made me laugh include:

  • Leonardo di Caprio in Titanic - he probably knows feck all about boats!
  • Patrick Stewart in TNG - he probably knows feck all about interstellar space travel!
  • Russell Crowe in Gladiator - he probably knows feck all about ancient Roman bloodsports!
  • Sam Neil in Jurassic Park - he probably knows feck all about dinosaurs!
