A right footed left back in the modern game just doesn’t work for team balance in attack or for crossing when you have inverted wingers, and it also puts the ball on the wrong foot when playing out from the back when you want to counter or pass to the winger.
Yep. Williams with Rashford just crammed a already busy central attack.
So frustrating.

He's getting a lot of stick in here. Remember that he's only 19 and will improve. Not every young player is Greenwood.

He did ok , some OTT comments on here . Considering the superstars that were also playing and didn’t bother showing up he certainly wasn’t the worst.

needs new boots for Sunday though

Jesus, remember every game is a cup final atm, it's a lot of pressure for a young lad. He's a very determined kid, but he's going to need to be a bit more composed of he's going to make it here. Felt like he was always playing catch up, but the effort I can't fault

Maybe it's the pressure but he looks a lot less adventurous going forward than he did a few months ago.
Agreed. I think post lockdown his form has been patchy. I wouldn't say pressure but that's just the life of a young player, there will be ups and downs in their form. Before lockdown he actually ousted Shaw and was our first choice left back for a period of time before Jan/Feb.

For a first season he's done well, most of his games he's performed well in. You have to accept that with young players they won't always be perfect.

In an ideal world he wouldn't have such an injury prone defender infront of him.

Kid needs to moved to RB. Him being right footed limits his play at LB. So many times he chooses to come infield instead of attacking the space out wide. Like the kid, but LB isn’t for him.

Some of you jokers need to temper your expectations for a 19 year old kid in his debut season

Brandon Williams is unfortunately looking more like an academy hyped youngster with each day; never been impressed by his performance and his last two games have been particularly disasterous.

Always predictable in attack, flailing in one on ones, and no physicality. Will sadly be another Patrick McNair, Tyler Blackett and co.

Shaw is our best fullback and Williams is a good squad option to cover both flanks and he has room for improvement and I will leave it there.

I thought he wasn’t terrible today. Not good but it wasn’t awful performance. It’s 4.5 or 5/10 to me. He had some moment when he defend well and managed to almost got an assist. There were good moment but also shite moments. 4 or 5 out of 10 was his performance. I thought Mensah was so much worse.

Didn’t look physically up to the challenge. No doubt the desire is there but he just got out paced, outmuscled in some of those duels with what’s his face. Fell over a few good times as well.

Seemed like after the break he tried to fill the same role Shaw does for us but without the ability so he just went back to making hapless runs down the outside. The combo play we’ve seen on that left side just isn’t there with him.

I’m wondering where the thread is in the main for when Harry shouted at him and told him to “*&^€£ing wake up”

He needs to be played at right back. I'm sick and tired of watching fullbacks being played in the wrong side. It doesn't work to have a fullback who 9 out of 10 times uses time to stop his run to get the ball on to his right foot. It affects both his own game and the winger ahead of him, and makes it easy to predict what they are doing. It often kills the flow of the match and enables the opposition to settle their defensive positioning.

The club needs to show some intend by buying a offensively competent left-footed left back to rotate with Shaw. I can live with Dalot, Williams and Fosu-Mensah as backup options for AWB if it means that we sort out left back once and for all.

That’s why not every young player should be playing for United. I keep saying but, there is, or should be, a standard set for the team - not a standard set for an individual which we are then expected to accept.

The truth of your Greenwood point is that, majority of 19 year olds are not good enough for Manchester United. That’s why it is unusual for a 19 year old to be in our team - because it is unusual for them to be of the standard. Greenwood is special because he’s 19 (18, even) and good enough. We shouldn’t be playing 19 year olds who are not up to it on the basis that we can at least explain their lack of quality. There’s a reason they are typically in the reserves or on loan at this stage. It shouldn’t be a problem for everyone else to deal with that you’re not good enough yet because you are 19, and expected to not be good enough.

Had a tough battle with Bowen, thought he dealt with him ok but he kept slipping at vital moments which didn't help at all.

One period in the 1st half he got completely lost at sea and left a massive gap for their CM who was wide open, but luckily Antonio didn't see him, god knows where he went at that point.

He really does need to be braver on the ball though, I think the issue is he stays facing sideways or backwards way too much when he gets the ball. He needs to receive it then turn and face the opposition straight away, run inside into midfield if you have to and then release it. Instead though he just panics and kicks it anywhere.

But Williams is playing because Shaw is injured and we don't have many left back lying around. TFM can play there but as far as I've seen him, he seems more comfortable at right back. Rojo ain't around. Dalots out. There isn't anyone else really, which is why we've been forced to start him.

He did play a bit before Shaw was injured, but that was more to get him minutes and see if he can hack it, he must have shown something special in training to even get there.

At full-time one of the first things that crossed my mind was at least Williams won't get slaughtered on RedCafe, how wrong was I?

He can't/won't use his left-foot is often aimed at him(wrongly), but he used his left-foot more last night than Luke Shaw has used his right-foot all season, and he put a peach of a cross in with his left that Shaw would have been proud of, I'm still laughing at the thought of Shaw putting any sort of cross in with his right-foot, but there you go.

A solid 7/10 last night for me, but the hate for the kid(which is friggin disturbing) runs deep.

Yea that’s right - we ‘hate’ Williams. Meanwhile, I suppose you ‘love’ him, although I’m sure that love will be forgotten when he’s a Bournemouth player in a few years, just like the many before Williams. Shaw is a left back and is not required to cross with his right foot, hence why nobody mentions that he isn’t putting crosses in with his right foot!

A 7/10 performance? That would suggest you think it perfectly acceptable for us to get that from our LB every week. Once people realise they don’t have a ‘duty’ to think academy players are all top talents they will see things a lot clearer I think.

Oh right so it's tough love is it, some of the comments, especially the last week, for a kid just making his way in the game are frankly sick. And if he ends up at a Bournemouth i'd wish him well.

Shaw has numerous chances every game to cross with his right foot but he refuses every time, and if his crossing with his stronger foot is anything to go by it's probably just as well.

He had a good game, hence the mark. Nothing to do with Duty, i'm just prepared to give an Academy Grad enough game-time to prove if he's good enough or not, and not write him off after a few average/poor games like most.

It’s neither tough love nor mollycoddling. It is honesty. None of us are actually speaking to Brandon Williams! It is assessment of a performance, and some taking the view to not wave any requirement of a standard on the basis that a player is 19.

There’s no willingness or unwillingness about it.We see what we see, and we call what we see. What does it help if we deny what we see, or make excuses for what we see? He did not have a ‘good game’, not by any metric other than maybe one you have created for him which is one where you don’t expect him to be good (because he’s 19 etc) and therefore exceeded expectations.

This is a Brandon Williams performance thread. In your objective opinion, do you think that this thread should be full of glowing reviews of his recent performances? This mollycoddling helps nobody and changes no reality at all. Williams is ‘just a kid making his way in the game’. Is the club doing him a favour or something? He’s representing us, and once you cross the white line - it doesn’t matter if you are 19 or 45, you’re there to do a job, and he didn’t do his well, although you seem to think he did so no surprise you seem to have difficulty accepting what you have read from others I guess.

Are you sure? I'd love to know what those(and there are many) that say he offers nothing going forward are watching as it's the strongest part of his game, and the nonsense about he never uses his left-foot as well, seriously? He created probably our best two chances in the first-half, and within a few minutes as well, he put a great cross in with his left foot in stride tight to the goal-line that a winger would have been proud of, then the next time in a similar situation he feigned to cross with his left foot, cut back leaving his marker in a heap and dinked one in with his right foot which resulted in Greenwood having a goal-bound effort blocked.

I know i'm more confident something will happen when Brandon picks the ball up in the opponents half than I am with Shaw, whether Brandon goes down the line, or cuts back onto his stronger foot and goes inside because he's a far superior footballer, and understands the position better.

Nowhere near good enough YET! A real downgrade on Shaw! Works hard but doesn't have the muscles or know how to hold that spot. Has some good moments but on the whole far too much of a risk in that position. It's a problem so long Shaw is unfit.

Personally I don’t rate him but he needs to get some man strength before we see what player he can become. It was man against boy physically against Bowen last night.

Ignore. He came up with a great gem other day where he said he’d have Williams over Shaw every day of the week.

He needs to improve fast, with Laird comming up I cant see him getting many chances if he doesnt get better fast.

I agree. Think some of you lads watching a different match. Had a decent game and could certainly pick 9 players that played worse than him tonite.

Came in to say nice to see him recover from the Chelsea game, but saw a barrage of criticism against him instead. Really don't understand the caf..
