Gibson, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and even Gary Neville weren't world beaters on their breakthrough season.

Also I don't recall O'Shea had an "amazing" debut season. He was more of utility player.

O’Shea was literally being compared to Maldini. That season he had a LB was sensational.

Maybe in season overall. But on that Sevilla game, I don't know how you can say AWB is comfortably better than Williams.
Overall, of course. You don't conclude which player is better based on one game.

William is a squad/backup player. I have no idea why you think he's a regular starter.
As squad player, he's starting games because the main FB is injured. That's the function of squad player. He's not world beater, but at acceptable level and with upside potential.

It's rare for a team to have squad FB as good as the main FB. Who are backups for TAA and Robertson? are these backups world beater or even close to those two level?

He thinks he’s a starter because he’s been starting games.

Yes, Shaw has been injured. But so what? Shaw will be injured again next season, and Williams will be starting games again. Given that he shouldn’t be starting games for United - he isn’t good enough for the role he has, which largely sees him starting games for United.

OSheas first season had many declaring him a future captain and top centre back etc. He was superb

With the comparisons to previous players over the last couple of pages, it has to be remembered that Brown and Fletcher were extremely highly rated as youngsters. They were rated similarly or at least close to how Greenwood has been now. Obviously they both struggled at first with the step up (for differing reasons), but the base talent was always there. Evans wasn't quite at that level but was also very highly rated, and there was a lot of debate over which of him and Pique were better.

O'Shea is the only one I can think of that, from memory at least, wasn't 'that' highly rated as a youngster. Of course he had the best debut season of all of them when he did get his chance in the first team, but before that he was significantly behind the others mentioned in terms of how highly he was rated. Off the top of my head he's the only real comparison to Williams in that regard who ended up being a very good squad player for us for many years. McTominay might end up being another one as well if he continues improving as he has each season so far.

Sensational Sheasy was that season. We became a utility player, and a decent one at that, but on his debut the boy exceeded all expectations.

Maybe we should fix the root cause, which is getting a better/healthier main FB, instead of bitching about a 19 y.o. squad player on his debut season?

Fair enough though, if he/she thinks Williams is not good enough as squad player. That's a matter of expectation.

Fair enough. Although for me, AWB is as frustrating as Williams (although AWB is a bit more polished). They both are currently not good enough as main United FB, imho. But then, they're still young and might improve.

That is valid too. Williams is perhaps, in my opinion, just about good enough to be a ‘squad player’ in the way that Mata is a squad player - someone who gets Carabao run outs and cameos. We aren’t in that situation at left back - we have an injury prone first choice who effectively shares games with his back up. For the last two years, we have said Lingard is a squad player - but the reality is, he has pretty much player every week, and he has shown to be not good enough. So if his title is squad player, it is clear we need a better player to fill the role he has had. If Williams is going to be starting half of our games, including two cup semi finals, anytime Shaw pulls his hamstring - then we need another option to do that.

Agreed with this, man.

If the lads being paid 65k in his new contract as reported I think it’s fair that there’s a level of expectation from him performance wise. Silly of us to be offering that much to kid in his debut season but he happily accepted so should expect scrutiny of performance isn’t at a particular standard.

God we’re awful when it comes to contract renewals.

That's what you get when offering new contract on player's last year. It's been going on for years.
Edit: He just signed a new one last October. I don't know for how long. Maybe he's just following Messi's footsteps, signing new contract every year.

Williams had a decent season with some really good games. There was a thread here which in usual Caf way called him better than Shaw when Shaw was struggling for form.

Few bad games doesn't make him a bad player. I wouldn't worry about the contract because his attitude is fantastic. He is a decent backup will get better.

Also I don't really like this notion that we should buy for building a squad. That isn't United way, we always made up our squad with good academy players.

McTominay has signed three 5 year deals in about two years I believe. Great work if you can get it!

When you have good players doubling on you this is going to happen. There was not much help for him and AWB from Rashford and Greenwood respectively. DeGea does not help him either. Yes he switched off for their first goal and that is the problem of the whole defence and more so of Degea who should be organising his defence more. People may say how but he should shout Brandon watch your man even before the cross came in. Top keepers would do that. I think if he had someone in front of him who helps him, he will be a better player.

I'm starting to think, there's something wrong with whoever negotiating these players contract.

Williams is not a left back

Williams is not a left back

Williams is not a left back

Ok...now that I have that out of my system, I certainly hope that our coaching staff recognizes this. I'd rather see Fred play at LB and see what he can do than see Williams ever play there again. He is way too right footed to play LB

Would like to see him on the right cause I have not been impressed with what I have seen from him. Looks poor in both ends of the pitch.

Nothing against Brandon but he is out of his depth as a left back, he keeps cutting in to pass the ball with his right foot, which can be so risky like against Chelsea for Mount's goal and hardly ever goes on the overlap when we are attacking. He was obviously at fault for the two goals against Sevilla but I also blame Wan Bisakka, Lindelof and Maguire as much as I blame Brandon, but in my opinion Brandon is not a left back and I doubt he can be a starting left back for any team in the premier league so why should he be playing there for us? He just does not give us any balance on the left side, plus he does not combine well with Rashford like Shaw does even though Rashford hardly gives him any protection. My main thing is that he is not comfortable on his left side and he becomes predictable.

Dennis Irwin was a right footed left back but he was very comfortable going on his left foot and even when he had to cut in to his right foot, his delivery into the box was quite special and I'm trying to remember how many crosses Brandon has delivered since Shaw's injury. Basically teams know to leave our full backs alone with all the space in the world because they both have absolutely no attacking qualities and offer no threat whatsoever going forward.

I would prefer for him to be challenging, Wan Bisakka and Laird for the right back spot and then Ole should go for the Sevilla left back Reguillon because Real Madrid do not want him and not only will he provide a good quality cover for Shaw, he might even keep the position outright because we know for sure he has a better delivery than any full back we have, and I really hope Ole give Laird an opportunity to compete next season afterall he was the reason why Brandon was converted to a left back because Ethan took his place at right back.

He has played much more football than expected from a backup LB.

Him only being 19y old and with such mature approach towards training and matches there's no doubt he'll become very good player for United, not sure as a starter more as a option from bench who's capable of covering several positions (lb, lwb, rb, rwb).

He's still far from Shaw but also has only started his career in the first team, have high hopes for him!
