Gaming Bloodborne (PS4)

Say you press the Playstation Home button, does the game still just run in the background?

Would this sort of game be enjoyable to a more casual gamer?

It'll still run, there are items you can get to teleport you out of danger. One where you lose your blood/souls and the other one where you keep your blood/souls but they're harder to come by

I think a casual could enjoy it, but just dont expect it to be like other games. It'll be slow progress and you'll die often while you learn how to play but there have always been items/tricks in the souls games where once you find it, suddenly the game feels easier.

For example if you know you only have 15-20 mins to play, you'd want to make sure you have the item to teleport back with your souls. Kill some enemies for the blood, teleport out after 15 mins, go spend your blood to make your character stronger or buy a new weapon or something and then leave it for the next day where maybe you go through those same enemies again but quicker because you know how to fight them now and your character is stronger. And you can take on the boss. Something like that

Okay, it sounds and looks interesting, certainly. Cheers, mate.

How are people playing it? I'm a bit out of the loop here, but everywhere I look says it's out on Friday.
I haven't even signed into my PS in about 3 weeks thanks to uni.m

Came out in NA on Tuesday and somewhere else today I think.

Maybe that's it. I'm in the UK. Was heading into town tomorrow, thought it might be available somewhere.

So do I have to beat this first boss before I can reach a new checkpoint? I've been messing around so long and just keep having to completely restart.

Will I lose all my progress if I go to hunters dream?

There's a shortcut on the bridge downstairs through a house to the central yarnham lamp, right before the boss. The only way you can go back to hunters dream is through a lamp anyways so it's not like you can lose anything, any door you opened will stay opened but all the enemies respawn.. World stays as is pretty much.

This is my question as well. I killed all the guys around the fire after a few attempts, then came upon some massive beast thing trying to open a gate which killed me. Restart, kill all the guys around the fire, kill stupid massive guy, then get killed by some werewolf looking things up some steps. They kill me, start again....How the hell do I preserve any progress?

The lack of a pause button is fecking idiotic.

I just found that I think, the gate to the left of the lantern by the ladder is now permanently open which leads you almost directly to what I believe is the "boss" or whatever you'd call it in this game.

So what about after I eventually beat the cleric or whatever it's called, does it save the beasts I've cleared after that or will I always have to clear them?

If you can't kill the wolves, sprint past them and go to the left downstairs and it leads to a shortcut to that place... There's not many shortcuts but there are a few always so you don't lose all your progress. That's why you have to be careful while playing it :p
And the no pause button is because the game is always online, though it's not as much for this one as other souls games. Before you could get invaded whenever so it doesn't make sense to be able to pause it. For this one you need to summon someone already to be able to get invaded by others.

Yeah the boss is right there, there's another area through that left gate too. And the enemies always respawn, you just don't need to go through that area again really.

I don't even have PS+...

So Elajjazz, one of the Dark Souls speedrunners who had world records played through the game in 1 sitting yesterday. He finished in...

12 hours 49 mins, making it by far his quickest first play through of a Souls game - I think he said all the others took over 20 hours and he still died a bunch of times doing "average player" things, but usually on normal enemies. In boss fights obviously his experience in the souls series kicked in and one shot a lot of them and had very little trouble with the others

Last I saw Dark Souls 2 speedruns (of the normal story main bosses needed to get to final boss, then killing final boss) were about 45 minutes long. This one might be shorter than 45 mins

Edit - He actually has a previous broadcast of 2 hours 11, so it mustve been around 15 hours. A bit better

Same mate. Exams finish 12th May or something like that. Crazy.

Haven't put any work in at all so I'm pretty fecked.
Christ tell me about it, got 4 assignments due may and another mid april I've done nothing for.

Can you play this online without PS+? I read somewhere that you can pause it (don't take this as gospel) if you're playing the game in offline mode, maybe you've selected online play when you can't even use it anyway and it's still not letting you pause.

Nope I'm definitely in offline mode. It doesn't let me start the online game. Just says "no ps plus detected" or something like that.

Tried turning the internet off on the ps4 itself? As in disconnect from your wifi.

Edit: Nevermind, looked around online and seems there is no way to pause it even if you're not connected.

Well that's pretty shite then.

Good time for the suspend/resume update to come out then I guess lol, imagine having to take a smoke/shit break and just leaving the game running, the anxiety whilst sitting on the bog would be unreal :D

Come to think of it you could just go during these loading times everyone is talking about.

Right, so considering I'm pretty shit at Dark Souls, should I even bother with this? I'm desperately trying to justify my PS4 purchase

If you found Dark Souls too hard I wouldn't bother. You'll just get frustrated and give up eventually.

Got past two bosses so far and I'm enjoying it. Bit bored of my weapon though (saw cleaver). Any recommendations for something more fun? The second form of the cleaver is way too slow for me.

Well their aren't any beasts near the lanterns that you'll come back to life at so any time I need a break I just go after I die. It's not too bad really.

I never played any of the dark souls games and I'm having a lot of fun with this despite being terrible. It's definitely very frustrating at times but I'm slowly getting better. I don't regret buying it at all and there are a ton of games I've gotten only to play for a few hours and never come back to - I don't think this will be one of them.

Apparently in online mode there's a way to call for help essentially and you can take on bosses with another player near you.

Yes with the bells you can summon other players to help you, similarly to Dark Souls. Not entirely sure how it works in this one, whether you need a certain amount of insight (which replaces humanity in this game) to do it.

One warning I have is sometimes bosses are harder with more players. Firstly in the Souls games, the bosses are scaled up if you have several players fighting them - dont take as much damage and can go to the harder phase of the fight earlier. And it also makes dodging attacks harder, because the boss wont stay in the same pattern as he would if you fought him solo. He could do something random because he's suddenly switched targets to the other guy, or the other guy went where he wasnt supposed to and caused him to do an attack you'd never want him to do, etc.

You can just exit game and then hit continue in the main menu when you're done, the game continues from where you left off.

Yeah you ring the beckoning bell and it uses 1 insight regardless of if you find somebody. It looks for somebody who rings the resonant bell, and if you want to play with a friend then you both just set the same password in the network settings which you can change in game and it matches the two of you up.

I was wondering where my insight went after I couldn't find anyone to join my game. Googled the problem and I found you complaining on a Reddit thread!

 Yeah mine got wasted before the first boss so I had to fight him alone

Finding the game in a store was difficult enough, it's pretty much sold out everywhere here. Got my copy though.

Don't want to be an idiot, what happens if I stack up vials and molotovs and then exit the game without reaching next checkpoint - are they still with me when I start playing tomorrow?

Exiting the game doesn't do anything, you just go on from where you left off everything the same when you start again. The game continuously saves your progress so there's no quitting and restarting either. It's just when you quit you have to go to a relatively safe area so you aren't getting attacked while you go and quit or aren't getting attacked right when you restart. It's not like you quit, and then you start at the start again. Turning it off is essentially just pausing the game.

Cool, that's good to know because I'm currently in the process of stacking up molotovs and vials.

I love it so far. Very difficult for me as I've never played Dark Souls before and I've never been great at games. Still stuck at first level but love the way you have to master it to pass through enemies, you cannot just rush and beat everything at first attempt - tactical approach is absolutely essential. Even though my character stays about the same I develop as a player here because I know what to expect from certain enemies, areas that proved too difficult for me to pass before are now piss easy, yet another problem occurs somewhere else and I need to overcome it. It's plenty of fun so far, perhaps because I don't rush myself, I'm not putting pressure on me to finish this game, I'm well aware I'm probably not going to complete it but I'll try to have as much fun as possible.

It's freaking awesome, never expected I'd like it this much. So far I've spent around 4 hours learning the game, still stuck before the first boss as I can't beat the big bad wolves that protect them but my progress has been good, at the beginning I'd struggle to get past the first stairwell, now I breeze past all enemies there, breeze past bonfire with hardly any loss of life, beat the big guy and crows in the following area and if I'm lucky I also get past wolves and the other two guys in the next area with ease. At the beginning it took me 30 minutes to get to big wolves on the bridge, now I can do it in 7-10 minutes easily. I think I might try to just run to the first boss as I'll be able to level up once I'm there, even if I lose from what I gather.

I absolutely, absolutely love the setting of this game. This world is literally fantastic, I've sunk more than 3 hours into this game yesterday and time just flew. Even though I've had very little progress the satisfaction that comes with discovering new paths and ways to beat enemies is terrific. I love how the game keeps you on the edge the whole time, it's very exciting to play.

Question I have - I seem to have 99 bullets in my store, I want to sell some of them because I know I'm going to acquire more on my way to the boss, but whenever I sell them I lose all bullets that are in the gun and are left with 0/20, but still 99/99 stored - how do I use them?

I hope I won't lose interest. It's brilliant and I think it's largely because I'm not putting pressure on myself to complete this, I'm well aware that it might prove to be too much in the end and I'll never finish it but I want to get as far as possible. I'm not that great at games I think so it may take me months to get to a reasonable level.

Sarni - if you haven't yet I would highly recommend trying to open the gate that's to the left of the lantern, once you open that if you really want you can run to the boss in under a minute and the gate stays open forever once you get it open the first time.

I'm in pretty much the same situation as you, I still haven't beaten the first boss but I'm having a lot of fun just roaming around and getting better at the game.

How do I get there? If I can go back after first bigger staircase with four enemies I bump into the big guy with a hammer, I've not fought him yet but I don't think it's the same gate I need to use. Probably somewhere around the bridge with wolves? I've stacked up 10 molotovs and 20 vials, should be enough to get rid of wolves if I can get around them reasonably.

I know I can run to the second boss and I know where but I don't want to fight those freaking rats yet.

I can't remember exactly how to get there from the lantern but if you get the bridge/walkway where the second boss is there should be a staircase going down between the wolves and the big guy with the crows. Just go down those stairs and you'll enter a house, go to the bottom floor of the house and then go outside and work your way up, you should get to the gate pretty shortly after that.

Is the second boss in the sewers then? I've only down there a few times but I've gotten killed almost immediately every time.
